24 Aug 17 UTC I knew it. I knew Russia was on the verge and there was nothing I could do. It was too late to do anything about it and convince France that the threat was there. Well done, d-ice. That's two for you!

24 Aug 17 UTC This is really embarrassing.
24 Aug 17 UTC Doncha hate zero SC survives? I've had two this Tournament.
24 Aug 17 UTC Oh I knew the threat was there all right, but there wasn't so much I could do. I couldn't hold Trieste and I only had one fleet in the north. I was hoping Germany was stronger than he appeared and that we had a little time to work together to push Russia back (now that he was blocked in Venice), but it turns out we didn't! I moved into Tuscany to allow we to hold Venice but also attack Tyrolia. Well done d-ice!
24 Aug 17 UTC I usually find Russia pretty tough in Gunboat (although a little easier in Fog of War), so that was a good win.
24 Aug 17 UTC I've found all countries tough.
25 Aug 17 UTC Good win! Good job keeping me from realizing how strong you were...
25 Aug 17 UTC As soon as I saw Russia in the North Sea, alarm bells were ringing (of course, I also saw him in Trieste.)
25 Aug 17 UTC Hey, I did try to stop him at the last. I even took Sevastopol from him.
25 Aug 17 UTC Hey, thanks all for a very entertaining game. The game started horribly for me with Turkey moving a fleet to Armenia, obviously for a new one in Ankara. I felt obliged to respond by also building a second fleet in the south. Four fleets in the Black Sea is usually good news for Austria. Indeed so, Austria had me on the ropes with armies in Moscow, Ukraine, Sevastopol and Galicia by 1906. Didn't think I'd be able to turn that around, but I must thank Italy for coming to my rescue at that time. It was also very helpful for me to borrow Ankara of Turkey, I don't know if T realized this but at this time I didn't intend for it to be an attack, just to get an army and disband that fleet. I suppose it helped that Austria moved to Armenia after that, because Turkey didn't retaliate. Thanks for that!

On the other side of the board I was particularly happy with stealing Denmark and then being able to hold all of Scandinavia with only two units. That allowed me to play with a much needed extra unit in the south. I realized the key in the north was to make sure no one was winning the battle of North Sea. I believe I was very successful in that strategy, and I as I recovered in the south and managed to push Austria back, I also made sure to stay out of Pru/Sil/Bal/Nth for as long as possible to not tip Germany off that I was doing well. I thought a few bounces with England in Nth and self-bounces in Ska would make it look like neither of us were getting anywhere, while I was sneaking an army into Clyde and taking over Britain. Again that worked really well. At this point I think the victory was already certain. The only thing that potentially could have stopped me was Germany pushing towards Warsaw and Baltic Sea - which loooked very unlikely.

I have to say I love playing Russia. It's a power with so much potential and can push units quickly on both sides of the board. The key is to make a difference on one end of the board while not falling too far behind on the other. It often fails, especially in gunboats - but when it does work, it's very satisfying.
25 Aug 17 UTC Excellent victory d-ice, well done!

You and Turkey put up a good fight against my Austria and i simply couldn't fathom how you remained standing when i made some serious gains on your main sc's. You had to have a stronghold left in Scandinavia of which i was extremely surprised. Yet, now that i see what happened north in the first years it is probably England's decision to leave Scandinavia alone that saved your ass from complete Austrian annihilation ;-)

Whilst I can only admire that you were able to still pull of a solo regardless of the damages that were done to you initially, it was a great bummer to see my flourishing Austria not even making a survival eventually haha.
