Vdip Local Meta
Hey guys! I'm curious what you guys think of the local meta here on Vdip, especially compared to other places (i.e. live-person tournaments, webdip, personal friend groups, other & etc.). I've never played anywhere outside of Vdip, having learned the game here and never expanding elsewhere, and I'm curious!

The Sandquest
So I've seen some players here go on some grand "quests" I'll say to play every variant on the site. I've decided I want to join the club and do so aswell, but I want to do so with some sort of cool "twist". Trying to solo every variant is a little impractical, and I'm not certain about something super simple like making them all gunboats. So anyone got some ideas?

BTW, Joseph Merrick at one point tried to work as a door to door salesman, if you can imagine, before seeking out the freak show. I was rather deeply impacted both by seeing the movie as a small child on TV and later intellectually examining my reactions. If you are not aware, the movie is a collaboration between David Lynch and Mel Brooks.

I remember reading a kind of sneering hipster movie review of Suicide Squad (which I have not actually seen) that centered on a contemptuous accusation that the characters were insufficiently "rebellious" because they all pathetically craved to be "normal" and that this clearly made them all "inauthentic". I could not decide whether that was a sign that the manufacturers of our culture are now so completely apart from reality that they can no longer comprehend humanity or whether they are themselves incurable grotesques at this point. In my experience volunteering for Special Olympics and having two of my mother's sisters being Special Ed teachers, the unbridgeable distance from people they care about is much more impactful for people growing up visibly disabled than any teasing or bullying from people who are hostile towards them.

I am glad you knew the reference. John Hurt and Anthony Hopkins were brilliant (as was the rest of the cast) in the movie. I did not know that Mel Brooks had anything to do with it, however. Thank you for that info.

Have you ever seen Mask with Cher, Eric Stoltz, Sam Elliot, and a teenage Laura Dern? A related true story of Rocky Dennis. Rocky suffered from craniodiaphyseal dysplasia. Another brilliant movie and amazing story of one's ability to overcome physical deformities to have a tolerably happy, if short, life.

I re-read Flowers for Algernon (the long version) last August. I think that gets to the issue more clearly as it is about the psychology of such apartness rather directly.

Inherent Balance
I was thinking about my past games today, and I noticed a pattern: when I played or fought against a (mostly) sea power that started in the corner, that power tended to have the advantage because of their spawn place and unit composition on the map. Does anyone else feel like this is the case, or do you think that these types of powers are balanced?
For reference, I was thinking of Italy--Balkans 1860, Srivijaya--Known World 901, Madagascar--Africa, and Japan--Youngstown WWII.

What was the name of the East Asian map, that I believe was being playtested(?), where the countries were: China, Taiwan, Philippines, Vietnam(?), Indonesia, and Brunei?

ER Team Game Revival
Hey Folks! I was recently thinking about the Europa Renevatio Team game we did a couple years ago and I think we can do it again, better this time. Among the improvements, it may be ideal to determine the teams ahead of time and make them public so we can try to come up with a "balanced" set of 9 teams of 4.
