Question Regarding CDs
I've noticed that when I click the profiles of people who CD in games, it sometimes still shows 0 CDs on their record. Any reason for it not showing up? Seems to semi-absolve people of CDs?

These Diplomacy variants look beautiful and I have wanted to play them for years. Is anybody here working on bringing them to vDip?

New Thread Idea
Does anyone know Polish History? Did The Deluge cause such material damage that it doomed Poland to economic and political death spiral, did it devastate the proto-bourgeois, densely populated Northwest at a key moment within a republic when it was fighting with the rural, agrarian South and East thus stunting an incipient movement towards urbanization and development or did it not really have any long term effect?

Scramble for Africa Variant - Gauging Interest
I was wondering how interested people would be in a Scramble for Africa variant. I'm already making one for my friends and me to use, so I could easily put it on the lab for testing once it's done.

The map as it is right now:
http://i.imgur.com/XG7oW6A.png

The players are Britain, France, Germany, Portugal, Italy, Belgium, Ottomans, Morocco, and Ethiopia. The borders have not been colored on this map, though supply centers are indicated with a maroon dot.

The idea is to have a few coastal supply centers be owned at the start (roughly 1880-1885 colonial boundaries) and a large number of neutral or civil disorder supply centers inland. The map will make use of rivers and island chains to increase the viability of fleets. While African powers (just Morocco and Ethiopia) are build-anywhere, all European colonial empires can only build in coastal SCs because they must be brought in by ship.

My greatest concerns are balancing the obviously unbalanced powers through either slight rule changes or greater access to supply centers and preventing the formation of stalemate lines from a large number of supply centers and Mediterranean choke points.

I would love to hear constructive criticism as well as any advice you may have for building this variant.

I'd say the initial drawing is about 25% complete, though balancing will still be a large concern.

This map looks incredible! Large maps are few and far between and are very popular (particularly historical ones), so I'd definitely be happy to see this here.

It'd take a lot of work to check this for balance, and I don't have much time now, but I'll look over it more carefully later. My first thought on seeing it, though, is that there are an awful lot of supply centers very close together in Europe, and that's always a bit of a worry especially on the side of a board, since it does tend to make stalemating the area quite easy. There isn't a stalemate line that immediately jumps out at me, though.
Yea, probs especially the cluster of island centers south of Spain ...

Thank you for the feedback. I see your point there, I would have liked to include more ocean space but I always like to have some name in mind when I make a territory. Perhaps I could split some of the seas further, remove Madiera's supply center, or even split the Azores and Canaries into two territories each but only one with a supply center. Dilemmas like this are why there is so much empty space in Africa.
This would be a very welcome addition, thanks! With ancestry from Pico, I'm always happy to see the Azores represented in Diplomacy :)

Like Captain, I've got no time at the moment - probably for the next six weeks - but I'd love to follow the progress and give feedback when I'm able. Count me in for eventual play testing.

I very much like the idea! Two suggestions:

1) Perhaps the build rules should be different in Europe? For example, perhaps the African powers should be able to build anywhere except in Europe?

2) If I counted correctly, the map as it is now contains 81 supply centers. If this is, like you say, 25% complete, then you'll end up with 324 supply centers. This is way too much; even the WWIVv2 variant, which is for 36 players, has less supply centers in total. You wanted to have 9 powers. This will mean that the average number of supply centers for each power will be more than the total number of supply centers on the whole Classic board. Eliminating a power would take ridiculously long and I wouldn't enjoy moving this enormous amount of pieces.
I'd suggest that you plan beforehand how many supply centers per power you want to have on the board (in Classic this number is just below 5) and then get an idea of how many supply centers you roughly want to have on each part of the board.

Have you considered adding the South African Republic as a 10th player? That would add historical interest, and perhaps some balance to the southern end of the board.

Mercy, I see your point. I should probably scale back on SC count, especially inland and in Europe. My target is 6-10 home SCs for each power and roughly a 2:1 ratio of home to neutral supply centers. This works out to around 200 SCs total, though as you point out, I seem to be overshooting the way I've laid it out so far. The size, however, is intentional - I wish for the early game to continue for 3-4 years to simulate just how hard it was to get to inland Africa.

Flem, that's an interesting idea. The Boers posed a major opponent for the British, so I could certainly include them to balance out that area of the board (or, should I say, Boerd?)
Leif_Syverson (1400 D Mod)

Wow this would be an epic map, but I agree that the center count needs to be scaled back and/or player count increased.

Perhaps a few more African powers? In addition to the Bóers in South Africa, you could add the Igbo in in Nigeria, the Mandinka in West Africa, and the Zulu. Another option to slow the expansion inland if you don't want to add powers and prefer to reduce center count and thus territory count is to simulate resistance from the natives by adding stationary neutral armies that must be dislodged to capture centers (see Known World 901).

Cap/Doc, I can't remember if we ever had a variant implemented where neutral units were able to issue support holds to each other but if so, this would be an option to add to the difficulty in conquering some of the stronger African powers.

Like Doc and Cap, I don't have much time on my hands, but as you develop the map, I would be happy to help analyze balance and stalemate lines when I do have some free time, and would love to participate in playtesting.

@Leif - I know the Viking Diplomacy variant has self-supporting neutral units.
ScubaSteve (1234 D)

Maybe a "nest" of SCs all clustered together in the middle of the map surrounded by neutral units that support hold each other, perhaps in a circle? That would require 3 units of strength be brought to bear in order to "break through" and would create an interesting situation in line with the idea of a scramble to the middle or some point. Just my thoughts.

I've been thinking this through before I resume work.

First, I love the idea of standing armies and support hold armies. These can be strategically placed to balance out a strong start or slow expansion into the interior. This map does a good job at showing African empires: https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/a/a8/Scramble-for-Africa-1880-1913.png/1280px-Scramble-for-Africa-1880-1913.png

The second idea I have is to use the Sea Lanes concept from that WW4 map or something similar to it. This, along with rivers, should help increase the maneuverability of fleets and prevent ocean-based stalemate lines.

Diplomacy: Is Germany Too Weak?
I noticed that Germany is considerably weaker in Diplomacy than it's historical counterpart. In game, Germany can very easily be knocked out by England and France. However, historically Germany was able to fight competently on three separate fronts. Does anybody feel that Germany is a little misrepresented in game?
More importantly, are there any variants that address this?

Feedback for 1v1 Cold War on WWIV map
Hi folks, some of you may have heard me talk on the podcast about bringing the WWIV map to a Cold War circa 1984 1v1 variant. Interested in your thoughts about whether I use the standard WWIV map, the v6.2 version (is there any actual difference in the map itself?) or whether the sealane version would be better. Thoughts?
