Issue with South American Supremacy Map
Hey, I'm getting ready to start a game with some friends using the South American Supremacy map. It appears the map is starting with a fleet in Bogata, which is a landlocked territory. the variant homepage lists Bogata as starting with an army. Is there is a good way to correct this? Thanks!

Map Markings
I apologize if this is a repeat question or if it's found somewhere obvious, but I'm brand new to vDiplomacy and I can't seem to find what the difference is between the two types of what I believe are SC markings on the Bye Bye Federalism map.

Can someone help me?

Option to play a variant with fewer than the max number of players?
Hello all,

I and two of my friends love playing 3 player diplo games together. Having gone through the different 3 player maps, I'm wondering if there is a way to play on some of the larger variants, but with just 3 people? For instance, I'd love it if we could play a 3 player game on Fall of the American Empire IV.

Which variant would you like seeing on vDiplomacy?
Is there a variant that you really want to play, but isn't available here yet?

I have done work on half a dozen variants and I would like to pick something else. What's your favorite?
Enriador (1507 D)

My personal favorite is "Ambition & Empire" due to its clever use of "Diplomacy Points". However the platform does not currently support these.

Among variants "closer to Classic" in terms of rules, "Arab Diplomacy" looks like a lot of fun, and should be easy to port. http://www.variantbank.org/results/rules/a/arab_diplomacy.htm

Arab Diplomacy looks interesting.

I love how the Saudi Arabian player is labeled "USA", ha ha.

@JECE

I am a long time fan of 1900, it's perhaps my favorite. @nonpunin10did is on the job, and if he needs help he knows where to find me.

Arab looks interesting indeed; I agree that the "USA" label on Saudi Arabia is somewhat disturbing.

This relatively new D.C. one looks fun:
https://sites.google.com/site/diplomacydc/

Also, while not the best balance-wise, Imperial Diplomacy and its extended version are some of my personal favorites as they were my very first two games of diplomacy:

DC looks very straightforward. Who is the author?

vDip has Imperial Diplomacy III already, but that Extended version looks super neat!

Intimate Diplomacy - no copyright issues there! Neither Adrien nor I would object, and Stephen Agar, the plagiaristc bastard who fiddled with it a bit, WITHOUT asking my or Ade's permission, removing my name when republishing it can get stuffed (he did that with Mobtown and sundry others). If you want formal written permission from both of us, I can get it as Ade and I still correspond..,

Modern 15

A 15-player variant inspired by Modern Diplomacy II with 5 additonal countries :

http://www.diplomatie-online.net/variante/infovariantes.php?&carteID=29

It is a French site. If you want to contact them for whatever reason, you can ask me because I speak French.
Enriador (1507 D)

@Kurt Thanks man!

@Chumbles

I did not know that, but then I never heard Agar's side of the story.

One of my variants (1913, playable here) got its partial inspiration from Agar's Diplomacy II. Diplomacy II showed up in 'Diplomacy World' #80 and was the result from several authors thinking together, yet Agar claimed it as his own.

Ever played John Norris' Milan, launched in the early 1980s? It's a masterpiece that, by far, is the most widely copied variant ever - even Powell's legendary 1900 variant uses it, and so does mine, Agar's Diplomacy II and dozens of others.

I doubt anyone ever asked Norris for "permission" as it would constitute fair use of (what is possibly) his intellectual property (the same applies to your creations... and mine). Credit is an absolute must though, and I agree Agar should have credited you, if that's true. Still, 'Abstraction III' does not credit Fred Davis, '1900' does not credit Norris (but credits Agar for Diplomacy II), etc.

I fiddled with Martin Kennedy's Versailles for example, and never cared to get his permission as he's out of my reach (if he were I would love to exchange some mail about that jewel!) but I *must* credit him as it's his brainchild, not mine. So I think there is a line to cross here, but the line is not so thin.
Enriador (1507 D)

Besides that: 'Intimate' looks absolutely awesome! How comes that I never saw it?! I don't know if its feasible to add it here due to coding limitations but I will certainly suggest it for my local Face-to-Face group.

I played an experimental version on a test judge ages ago. I don’t know if the variant was ever made “official” but it was really interesting. It was standard map and rules but instead of ordering all players would vote on any order for any unit (negative votes were also allowed). You’d get something like 10 votes per (own) home SC and 5 votes per other SC. The game started with build phase. I believe it was called democracy.

Another +1 to versailles. Heard about it for the first time on the Diplomacy podcast by Kaner and Amby and it sounds like an incredible variant.
nopunin10did (1041 D)

Versailles is a massive programming project, not just a variant. I'd be willing to take that on (after finishing Baron VonPowell's 1900), but at my current pace of development, it might be a loooooong time.
Enriador (1507 D)
16 Mar 18 UTC
Yeah, like @nopunin10did said. Realpolitik's version of Versailles is easily doable, but then the pairings are always fixed (so Sweden will always go with Italy, for example) and the minor powers effectely act like a full part of the majors.

@Retillion, Modern 15 looks neat! But what about Modern-Up (http://uk.diplom.org/?page=about_modern-up), Slovenia (http://uk.diplom.org/?page=about_slovenia) and Modern Extended (https://imgur.com/a/rP6jI)? I would like to do only one of them if possible.

You know another thing I want in Modern? Wings. They're awesome!
Retillion (2304 D (B))
16 Mar 18 UTC
@ Enriador :

"Modern-Up" and "Slovenia" are possibly interesting but it seems like they do not add much variety (compared to "Modern Diplomacy II" : variantID=19) for a new variant.

"Modern Extended" (https://imgur.com/a/rP6jI) looks really great ! It seems very interesting and well balanced. That is exactly the kind of variant that I prefer : many players on a big map that offers a lot space to maneuver
nopunin10did (1041 D)
17 Mar 18 UTC
I've played Modern Extended twice. The creator (joe92) is over on PlayDiplomacy, and he's GM'd a few rounds of it on the forums.

As there haven't been many rounds so far, one can't speak too accurately to balance, but I think it would be a good fit for a site like vDip.

We want the base code allowing more than two types of units - the more the better.

A third type would make Wings available.

A fourth type would allow A/F differentiation for variants with 2 kinds of unit strenghts (half/double).

Six types than this would allow A/F differentiation for variants with 3 kinds of unit strenghts (half and double).

Cohen's 'Mandate of Heaven' is in my to-do list already. vDip needs more China!
Humility is one of my best qualities, right Amby and DumbLikeColumbo? LOL

Thanks for the interest in Mandate of Heaven, Enriador. But I believe that MoH would be extremely difficult to code. Besides, I think it has some significant flaws and I intend to work on it after I finish (1) playtesting and tweaking Dawn of the Enlightenment, (2) developing ""Unconstitutional", which is my current working title for a variant set in 1801 in an alternate America where the United States Constitution was never ratified (7 Powers, consisting of Massachusetts, New York Pennsylvania, Virginia, South Carolina and 2 Native American Powers), and (3) tweaking Conquest of the Americas. If you are interested in coding one of my variants, since Flame has been working on Western World 901 already, may I suggest either Spice Islands or East Indies (or both!--LOL), which I think are better variants as they currently stand, and both of which would be much simpler to code. vDip needs more Brunei, Java, Malacca, Siam, Ternate, Tondo and Vietnam too!
Enriador (1507 D)
18 Mar 18 UTC
@Cohen

I couldn't agree more, Southeast Asia lacks decent variants and 'Spice Islands' look very good. I am a big fan of 'Maharajah', but have you playtested the combined map of 'East Indies'?

I will give it a look anyway, thanks for the suggestion.
Enriador, I have playtested Spice Islands, and Maharajah's has been played extensively, but the East Indies map has not yet been playtested. Feel free. ;^)

Seriously, as I have gotten more and more experience over the decades analyzing, designing and playing variants, I have developed something of an innate knack for determining whether a variant will play well. Both of the subvariants are well balanced and eminently playable, and my variant "spidey sense" gives me no reason to believe that the combined variant would not be equally playable.

Given the geography and history of Southeast Asia and the surrounding areas, it has always been mildly surprising to me that the area hasn't been a fertile source for Diplomacy variant subject matter.

@nopunin10did

I will talk to them about Modern Extended, thanks for the tip. PlayDiplomacy has so many cool Play-by-Forum variants! I am finishing VaeVictis' Napoleonic: Empires & Coalitions, and I found it buried in a pile of old forum threads at PlayDip. There many hidden jewels there.

Policy For Site Unavailability/Glitch
What do you mods think about having some kind of policy posted to address when the site goes down or is not functional in the future? You have chosen to cancel the 1st game of Divided States over this, but the last time I was involved in a game that had this happen, the last phase was replayed. So currently, the response isn't consistent.

WTA vs Draw-Disvaluated Scoring
What about adding Draw-Disvaluated Scoring to vDip?

It's a mix of Calhamer Scoring (aka Winner-Takes-All) with Draw-Zero Scoring, and has the fortunate effect of pushing players towards a solo unless a draw is absolutely necessary. Solos work like in WTA, but draws are different.

PPSC vs SoS
I couldn’t find the answer in Help.
I know PPSC means in a solo the points are allocated based on supply centre count while in a draw it reverts to an equal split of points like DSS/WTA
For SoS over on WebDip, in a draw the points are allocated on a sum of Squares principle. But Help section doesn’t say what happens in a solo. Same method or reverts to winner takes all? I’m assuming SoS whether draw or solo but checking
Thanks
