I think France might have a bit of an advantage in an France versus Turkey game. Likewise I see there is England versus Turkey. I would expect possibly Turkey might have the advantage in that one. But I really don't know for sure.

France vs Australia and Italy vs German are the most even ones IMO...Also wenn have a special Version of England vs Turkey (Classic - England* Vs Turkey) where England starts with its fleets at sea already, which also gives quite even gameplay.

I think your England versus Turkey variant with the fleets at sea sound like an interesting idea.

FvA is the best one by a long way IMO. IvG is (arguably) unbalanced and E*vT is not really very fun, it takes far too long for you to get to one another and as such you're playing 'race to the stalemate line' rather than actually trying to out-think your opponent most of the time.

Pretty much every other combination is really unbalanced.

Non-classic 2-player variants:

Lepanto - As far as I am aware this variant is currently broken (it sometimes lists the wrong person as the winner), so I wouldn't advise playing it right now.

Duo is pretty good - the symmetrical aspect usually detracts from how interesting a variant is to play, but Duo is pretty well designed and has provided some very interesting and close games for me. Obviously it is completely balanced too, since it is symmetrical. I can definitely recommend this one.

I haven't played Cold War or American Empire 1v1, so someone else will have to talk about those. From the stats, though, they both look fairly well-balanced.

Well, I have played FvA with both powers now, and I think it is actually fairly well balanced . I looked at Lepanto and to me it doesn't even look like Diplomacy, so I can't say it appeals.

I have been teaching a friend to play, which has reignited my interest for the game (I used to play occasionally on Webdiplomacy), so if anyone wants to play a two player game I would be interested, although I am a bit rusty at the game.

I have just discovered that stats features with these games (very nice feature). Looking at the stats for Germany versus Italy, it is clearly unbalanced, with 742 Germany Solos to just 437 Italy solos. FvA has 603 to France and 871 to Austria, so my original impression looks like it was wrong. I think my view was biased by the fact I played France against a total newb as Austria. I am presently playing Austria now and I think it seems solid.

From experience and just from looking at the map on the American conquest map I think that there are too many SCs, meaning that you spend a lot of time trying to get SCs. Looking at the games which have finished, most of them look to have finished with one player conceding, rather than one player gaining the most SCs. But that is just my opinion.
