Issue with South American Supremacy Map
Hey, I'm getting ready to start a game with some friends using the South American Supremacy map. It appears the map is starting with a fleet in Bogata, which is a landlocked territory. the variant homepage lists Bogata as starting with an army. Is there is a good way to correct this? Thanks!

Map Markings
I apologize if this is a repeat question or if it's found somewhere obvious, but I'm brand new to vDiplomacy and I can't seem to find what the difference is between the two types of what I believe are SC markings on the Bye Bye Federalism map.

Can someone help me?

Option to play a variant with fewer than the max number of players?
Hello all,

I and two of my friends love playing 3 player diplo games together. Having gone through the different 3 player maps, I'm wondering if there is a way to play on some of the larger variants, but with just 3 people? For instance, I'd love it if we could play a 3 player game on Fall of the American Empire IV.

Which variant would you like seeing on vDiplomacy?
Is there a variant that you really want to play, but isn't available here yet?

I have done work on half a dozen variants and I would like to pick something else. What's your favorite?

Policy For Site Unavailability/Glitch
What do you mods think about having some kind of policy posted to address when the site goes down or is not functional in the future? You have chosen to cancel the 1st game of Divided States over this, but the last time I was involved in a game that had this happen, the last phase was replayed. So currently, the response isn't consistent.

New mega-variant: Divided states....
Here comes our largest variant ever: Divided States.
A variant for 50 players!! With 693 territories (270 land, 236 coast, and 187 sea territories).

For such a large variant I think it's necessary to remind everyone how we handle errors here.

1.) Always report all problems in the modforum. Missing links, wrong links or everything else.
2.) We might need to pause the game in question, but usually we are fast fixing bugs.
3.) If you see a missing link: We will fix the link and reset the phase-timer, so you do have enough time to enter your order.
4.) If you see a wrong link for you too choose: Don't use this link and report it. We will remove the link, no harm done. If you use the link: See 5.)
5.) If you see someone else make a faulty-move we will remove the wrong link and reprocess the turn with all wrong orders set to "hold". But we can only reprocess the last turn. If you report an older problem, we can't reprocess the turn.

Due to the use of sealanes, I am especially concerned about the possibility of a missing adjacency. As Oli said, report any bugs immediately to the mod forum.

@Oli
Thank you a lot for guiding me through the process of setting up this behemoth! I couldn’t have done it without your help.

@Dr. Rec
I’ll join that game in around a week or less. Right now, I’m a mere 6D away from what I’d need to join.

@Teacon
My best guess, judging by how long WW4 games usually take, is around 20-25 in game years.
abadu (1227 D)
13 Feb 18 UTC
So with two phases each year and retreats/builds maybe making up for a third phase (being optimistic here) that would make it 2 * 3 * 25 = 150 days at least, so probably half a year at minimum for the last survivors?

Anyway, this is so awesome! Is this really a new record for the biggest variant ever officially played? Glad to be part of a history-making match then :)
Technostar (1302 D)
13 Feb 18 UTC
This variant is tied with New World Order for the largest number of players, but since NWO is mostly based on the WW4 map, Divided-States probably has more total territories.

I wasn't planning to return for any new games any time soon, but it's impossible to let this opportunity pass. Amazing job, Technostar and Oli!
Steve, it was an oversight on my part. I intended anonymous but didn’t realize I’d missed it until people were joining. My bad. That being said, I’ve never created a large game that didn’t have people complaining about one parameter or another. Along with runnin tournaments, it’s one of the damned-if-I-do-damned-if-I-don’t aspects of Diolomacy.

This one is anonymous, and choose-your-state, by request. I’ll make a gunboat now, see if we can’t catch lightning in a bottle.

GOD (1850 D Mod (B))

I'd have a proposition to make, being in the first game now: how about writing each state's name in some kind of background shade over the state on the map?
Being a non-US player, I do know some of the states, but not all of them and have to Google all the time, which is especially annoying on my phone...orientating by colours will only get you so far too, it's so many states... :D

Or am I alone with that?
Conversely, has anyone been to all 50 states? I've been to 40 of them...

Ah yes, but it would still be more helpful to have the territory names listed on their won page, and by state, province, and ocean region -- perhaps linked off the variant description page.
Technostar (1302 D)

@BobRoss
A 50x50 tournament would be absolutely absurd, let's do it! Just be sure to block off the next few years of your schedule before joining.
In all seriousness, I'd be rather surprised if 50 games of this map have been finished before I graduate college. WWIV only recently passed that mark, and it's only 70% the size of this.

@GOD
A background name for the states would be tricky to implement, especially with my still-limited web programming knowledge. For right now, I'd say the best thing you can do is use Google Maps or a separate image for reference. Though if you need to find somebody's chat, note that the state chats are listed in a snakelike pattern across the US. The top states listed are all along the east coast, while those towards the end of the list are all along the west coast.

@Dr. Rec
While I have not yet had a chance to do that, I am hoping to go on a cross-country road trip one summer when I'm in my 20s.

@G-Man
I'll see if I can get a detailed reference sheet made up, though I cannot do so right away because I've been rather busy recently.

RagingIke297 (1010 D)
15 Feb 18 UTC
Not sure how difficult this would be to implement, but what about if there was another button added next to the big map button that was just a map of the US with state names on it, or maybe the big map should be an image that is half big map, half map of states with names
Retillion (2304 D (B))

How long does it take to study the location of those 50 states ? Is that so difficult ?
BobRoss (1752 D)

I have been looking for New-Amsterdam for hours now, with no luck #wheremycoloniesgone
I mean, really, you don't need to have every state memorized, just the ones immediately around you. You should figure it out in not to long, once you've bandied the names around for a while.
Technostar (1302 D)

Does a game have to be rated in order to count towards the variant's statistics?
ScubaSteve (1234 D)
15 Feb 18 UTC
I would bet that 95% of Americans couldn't correctly identify all the states on a map. I think I could but there might be a couple around New England that I wasn't sure about. I wouldn't sweat it. Playing this variant is probably the only way to learn it.
Oli (977 D Mod (P))

WTA vs Draw-Disvaluated Scoring
What about adding Draw-Disvaluated Scoring to vDip?

It's a mix of Calhamer Scoring (aka Winner-Takes-All) with Draw-Zero Scoring, and has the fortunate effect of pushing players towards a solo unless a draw is absolutely necessary. Solos work like in WTA, but draws are different.

PPSC vs SoS
I couldn’t find the answer in Help.
I know PPSC means in a solo the points are allocated based on supply centre count while in a draw it reverts to an equal split of points like DSS/WTA
For SoS over on WebDip, in a draw the points are allocated on a sum of Squares principle. But Help section doesn’t say what happens in a solo. Same method or reverts to winner takes all? I’m assuming SoS whether draw or solo but checking
Thanks
