Play By EMail
Hello all! I will be going on a hiatus from vDip soon and looking to play some more slow-paced Diplomacy. Specifically Play By EMail (PBEM).

PBEM is a much slower paced (typically a turn a week) Diplomacy, which can lead to more complex and indepth games. In addition, since they are adjudicated by a human GM, new maps and special rules can be implemented to make the game more dynamic and interesting.

I am considering trying to boot up another game of NWO (New World Order, a coalition victory game with nukes) or Explore Dip (a Civilization type game where each player has to "explore" the map and everyone has their own map of what they can see, while also upgrading units and cities for bonuses). Alternatively, for more simple games, I might hit up just a map variant without too many special rules.

I'd love to get a mix of PBEM vets and new people to keep this game style active in our community. If you're interested in elevating your Dip to a new height and playing some of what might be the most fun Dip you've ever had, PM me!

I'd be brand new to PBEM, and I like the sound of Explore Dip. Do you have an idea for the size of the games (which I'm really using as a proxy for length of game because that's probably harder for you to estimate)? I don't feel particularly excited about committing to a 2-year game.

Hi Battalion -

Surprisingly, some of the games haven't taken that long. The NWO games seem to take between 5-6 months due to how the voting is, and the Explore game took I think like 8-9 months for the longer ones, but there might have been delays in there, I can't remember.

Now, if we did Europa Renovatio or Divided States as PBEM...

Anyways, I'd say on average 6ish months is a relatively decent timeline. That said, it's usually a turn a week, so it's a lot easier to keep up with even if you're busy, and delays for vacations and things are fairly easy to coordinate.

If I'm being honest, it'll probably be a smaller-ish map as opposed to NWO with dozens of players. NWO was just a bear to adjudicate.
PBEMers are the cool kids. ;^)

vDip Maps?
As a general question, why do VDip maps look so bad? Is there not a way to update the graphics to make them feel less crowded and old?

Can you send a link of a picture in vdip messages?
Are links trusted in games? Like, if I created a stalemate line with arrows on my phone, then turned that image into a link to send to countries in a game I am in.

It would save hours of writing it down in text and double checking that I wrote it down correctly, makes it easier for the other countries to read and follow it rather than copying text orders, etc.

New variants?
I recently stumbled upon this seemingly abandoned play-by-email site: http://www.diplomaticcorp.com/variants.php
which got me wondering if it would be possible to move any of those files here. Looks like there is a wide range of maps and rule edits among the variants that we don't have here, has anyone played any of those before?

Anon games with ready symbol?
Is anyone else interested in being able to have anon games where you can still see if people have readied their orders or not? Like how there is an option for hidden draw votes, would it be possible to have an option to either have or not have hidden order status?

Diplomacy puzzles
What if there were Diplomacy puzzles, functioning similarly to Chess puzzles? i.e. you would start with a complicated troop setup and you would have to figure out what the best orders are, or how to guarantee X supply centers in Y turns. Is there something like this that already exists? I couldn’t find much of anything online beyond a few one-offs.

If the Pure variant is a "build anywhere" game (and I believe that it is), that needs to be added to the Special Rules/Information section of its page.
