The map is a pain with all those rivers that are placed even where there are no such navigable rivers. As I just said: never again.

Spain should have never believed in alliance with me (I think it's the most impossible of all alliances). It only lasted the first "year" anyhow. Not sure how he could have stopped me but I had clear that my natural rival was Spain and all the rest was accessory.

I tried to ally with Holland, offering him the area West of the Rhine and whatever else he wanted but he never really established any sort of dialogue with me. That was when I voted draw because the situation was going nowhere. Luckily Münster switched camps, with great success but, even if Holland was determined to die fighting against me, this served my purpose of breaking the stalemate.

A critical ally was England. He wasn't playing "normally" because he's obviously unexperienced. I took advantage of that and played "friendly tutor" (very honestly but of course with my own game as priority). Probably the game would have been very different with a more experienced England, although I doubt Spain would have ever managed to get that Armada in play.
10 Jul 15 UTC The hope was that I could take England by surprise, stabbing him as he committed to you. His retreat to NEC totally shattered my expected attack on him, though. I tried to develop it via SEC, but then France put paid to that one, too. At that point I was just trying to set up a defensive line. :)
10 Jul 15 UTC I was hoping that Munster would be able to get troops in order before my line broke but alas, it did not happen.

And France, honestly, I never believed in an alliance with you either, and Holland and myself were going to attack you, but you were too far away at first, and then everybody invaded my only tight ally, so I was kind of screwed.
10 Jul 15 UTC @Münster: sinking your fleets (what implied outguessing you) was quite fun, more so knowing you could only bring them back to live far inland.

@Spain: OK, glad to know. I think that my key to victory was very fast early development and that could not have happened if you, Spain, clashed with me in the first decade (year), notably in the key province of Namur. Once I secured Namur-Brussels-Antwerpen, I felt quite safe for the rest of the game, with a bit of help from England, just a bit stuck because of the Dutch constant and unprovoked aggression but never ever at risk.
10 Jul 15 UTC My conundrum was that if I took Namur early, it would have firstly incited all out war, and secondly I could not have held it as I was trying to make gains against Munster at the time.
After my northern border was settled, the west had been thoroughly fortified, so good job with that
10 Jul 15 UTC Yeah, I thought that with so many dots all around, I'd better grab the most distant ones I could get as fast as possible. Kinda like you play go, taking positions before actually occupying and fortifying. If I would have delayed my own development by taking Cambresis for instance, the game would have been quite differnt most likely.
