12 Mar 20 UTC | Spring, 1231: Armenia is beefy on this map. 7 land provinces bordered + Caspian + 2 more provinces via Silk Road. |
12 Mar 20 UTC | Spring, 1231: Aye |
12 Mar 20 UTC | Spring, 1231: Of course it's my neighbors that no-show |
12 Mar 20 UTC | Spring, 1231: Aye |
13 Mar 20 UTC | Spring, 1231: Delhi, I think that begs another question: Does the map maker know where Armenia is? |
13 Mar 20 UTC | Spring, 1231: Cause Armenia is basically around where Georgia, Diyarbakir, and Anatolia meet. There are also numerous other naming errors on this map, some of which are names that don't even exist |
13 Mar 20 UTC | Spring, 1231: But did those names exist in the 13th Century? |
13 Mar 20 UTC | Spring, 1231: Yes, yes they did |
13 Mar 20 UTC | Spring, 1231: There are also a fair few of these names that I can not find any reference to when looking them up, probably the most obscure was seeing one single map that had Pitzorke Sea labeled (it said Mare Pitzorke). There are also other things such as North Cathay, South Cathay, and Waters of Cathay, (Cathay being an alternate word for China named after the culture of the Liao Dynasty) which is far too north for the areas they controlled. |
13 Mar 20 UTC | Spring, 1231: To be fair to the map creator, the Byzantines used Armenians extensively in their eastern provinces. Nikephoros II, John I, and Basil II had programs to resettle them across the frontier to replace departing Arabic populations in the Taurus mountains. John I Tzimiskes was likely Armenian and some Armenians had a kingdom on the southern shore of Anatolia after the 4th Crusade took Constantinople. So of all the territories to make into a beefcake, Armenia isn't a bad choice. But it was likely divided into multiple smaller fiefdoms that owed allegiance to Romans/Mongols/Crusaders/Turks vying for control of the area. |
13 Mar 20 UTC | Spring, 1231: You may want to check again where Anatolia is. Armenia would just about entirely be in the Diyarbakir area on here. If they wanted to that's the province they should have named Armenia. Armenians weren't at all really in the area of the Armenia province here |
