10 May 21 UTC Spring, 1901: GameMaster: Please remember that negotiations before the game begins are not allowed.
10 May 21 UTC Spring, 1901: Info: This is a choose your country game.
10 May 21 UTC Autumn, 1901: Ok, good luck to you :) There is strategy in this but also a strong element of that game rock/paper/scissors... I do 't know if I'm a better game, or just a more experienced one.
10 May 21 UTC Autumn, 1901: Yes, good luck to you too! We're almost past 1901, which means its time to actually start thinking and not picking box standard moves.
10 May 21 UTC Spring, 1902: Lol, all y9our moves appear to be my opening moves. That makes sense but I guess I'll soon be able to start predicting you :-)
10 May 21 UTC Autumn, 1902: These tend to be the moves I see in a lot of GvI, and they seem to do the Italian pretty well.
10 May 21 UTC Autumn, 1902: You have the advantage of me in this... I've only played this variant once before, the one we just finished so I'm not aware of the ideal opening moves.
10 May 21 UTC Autumn, 1904: I'm starting to think that holding Vienna is the winning or losing of this variant.
11 May 21 UTC Well, thats that. I find it interesting how few retreat orders there were in this game.
11 May 21 UTC GameMaster: Italy voted for a Concede. If everyone (but one) votes concede the game will end and the player _not_ voting Concede will get all the points. Everybody else will get a defeat.
11 May 21 UTC Why did you give in? it was not yet clear and you'd done very well to take Marseilles... I didn't expect that.
11 May 21 UTC Life is getting busy, mostly on the account that I just had to take my Mom to the hospital. Besides, I'm fairly certain there were a couple ways for you to win this turn; Smyrna, Edinburgh, London, Paris, and Portugal were all yours without any chance to contest them. I only could have taken Sevastpol or Vienna if you did a bad misorder, and the odds of getting both? Nah.
11 May 21 UTC I think the key in this game is to take and hold Vienna... like the central 4 squares on a chessboard... one needs to allocate enough resource to take and hold that, then some resource to scouring the uncontested regions.

Anyway, thank you for both games...

Consider this for a big one opening soon - https://www.vdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=48542

and this for a game which is different and very fun - https://www.vdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=48747
11 May 21 UTC I might try out the German one, but I hate Sealanes so bad, haha. Only time I've ever had fun in Renovatio was getting to play as Novogrod and ignoring the sea for 2/3 of the game.
11 May 21 UTC Also, thank you for the games as well. I find myself agreeing with your analysis on Vienna. There are often games where I focus more on France than Austria or try to trade Vienna for Budapest, which both seem like mistakes.
11 May 21 UTC Yeah, I would not have misordered holding Vienna and I don't think you could take Sevastopol either, so you're probably right. I'd take Paris, Smyrna and Portugal this turn... and even if you had held on, you'd be against superior numbers.

Having said that I NEVER concede. I make a point to fight to the very bitter end in these games... why? So that anyone that comes across me in future games know that I'm diehard... that I'm not an easy target.
11 May 21 UTC Thats a fair point, but I don't consider myself a prominent enough player to have to worry about my image for future negotiations.
11 May 21 UTC Neither was I, and if you continue playing, as I hope you do, you'll get better...you're not that bad now!
11 May 21 UTC I see that you won this game - https://www.vdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=48439 against some very good players. Halt is an excellent player, so well done!
11 May 21 UTC I appreciate the pat on the back, so to speak, but I hope I didn't take time out of your day for you to do that, lol
