New Variant: Manifest Destiny III
Hail diplomats,

Yet another variant is coming: Manifest Destiny III. It's set in North America during the conquest of the Wild West.

Variant Tournaments
I've really enjoyed playing variant-specific tournaments such as the Known World 15x15 currently underway.

@Mercy, I forgot to address one point: I will be creator and GM of all 7 games - so no need to ask each player to create one separate game. It is more convenient to keep it with 1 person.

As a matter of fact, I shall be creating the games now in assumption that no one will consider the 8p buy in (to facilitate Grahamso) a significant problem. If some players do consider it problematic, we will adjust the plan accordingly.
d-ice (1969 D)

@Bob: you will need to join the games you create. I recommend you choose Austria in all games. Once a couple of players have signed on you can resign from all games and rejoin as your correct power (if you resign before any players have joined the game will be deleted)
BobRoss (1752 D)
13 Mar 18 UTC
If you Moderate the game you indeed still have to 'choose' a specific country. Yet, as moderator you won't immediately be participating in the game. I will have to sign up with password as well, allowing me to then choose the country that Mercy will have assigned for me. In this case I will be going with 7 times England as it is interestingly enough the first country below 'Random'.
BobRoss (1752 D)
13 Mar 18 UTC
As you can see in the first game, it's missing 7 out of 7 players:

http://vdiplomacy.com/board.php?gameID=34069

I will create the remaining 6 games and send the respective links to these games to Mercy. Then he can add those links to the country adjudication messages. That will give a clearer overview than if we would be sending separate messages to all players ;-)
d-ice (1969 D)

But... won't you (as a moderator) be able to see who is who?
d-ice (1969 D)
13 Mar 18 UTC
I just thought it was so - that's why I've always run my tournaments without moderators, but perhaps I was overly paranoid?

Nope, that is fortunately not a function of Game Moderator :) I actually was afraid of exactly that when I was going to GM the Balkan 7x7 so I contacted Doc beforehand to clear all of that up and to ensure I wouldn't get any sort of advantage from being GM. My only 'power' will be that I can actually send public messages in the game (which I will most likely not need, apart from providing a summary of rules everyone ought to adhere to ) and that I can pause the game at any given moment. There are a few other functions that I do not recall, but they do in no way harm the fairness of the games.

Could you post all the gameID's, Bob?
BobRoss (1752 D)
14 Mar 18 UTC
I have just sent you all the links including the password for the games via PM.

@Fow7x7participants
Await the message from Mercy with all information (Game ID's, Password and respective country assignments). Also, please make sure that you sign up for the right country in the right game. It would be an annoying hassle if we have to figure out who signed up for the wrong empire ;-) All 7 games will run simultaneously as soon as everyone has signed up for them.
BobRoss (1752 D)
14 Mar 18 UTC
Furthermore, I will post a short message in Game 1 with a reminder of basic rules that everyone has to adhere to. Most of you, perhaps everyone, will be familiar with them - but for clarity purpose, please read through them once you've signed up.

4. Spartan22
5. YCHTT
6. Grahamso1
7. Dr. Rec

Double checking the scoring for FoW tournament. Based on Dip points? Not some other system
BobRoss (1752 D)
15 Mar 18 UTC
@Graham

Scoring in the tournament is not based on Dip points ;-) Instead there is a different scoring system in place that is explained somewhere far back in this thread.

If I recall it correctly it is the following:

Solo: N/2
Draw: (N-D)/D

N = Number of Players
D = Number of players in a draw

Thus a solo would be 7/2 = 3.5
A 3-way Draw would be (7-3)/3 = 1.33
etc.

I just want to state that I am extremely pleased with the active participation of the players in the 3rd FoW 7x7 Tournament. So far everyone has been playing in accordance with the honourable agreement to ready up whenever possible, which is giving these games a very enjoyable pace.

It has a been a fun set of games thus far thanks in no small part to everyone readying up.

Follow up message for all participants of the 7x7 FoW Gunboat tournament.

Please indicate your opinion on whether 'concede' votes are allowed in the tournament:

Against Concede Votes:
-
-
-

Okay with/In Favor of Concede Votes:
-
-
-

I have decided to remain impartial as Game Master of this tournament as I am personally quite indifferent towards this matter. Only if the remaining 6 votes end up being a 3-3 tie I shall make a final decision to ensure the games will continue as soon as possible.
In favor of but not as a diplomatic means. If you vote concede, you should be willing to take a loss right then and there.
In short, using it as a form of chainsaw diplomacy = bad. Using it as saying "I accept it is a done deal, let's just end and move on" = acceptable.
Good diplomacy, Bob.
Generally apathetic, but I’ll say in favor (sorry, on phone so not copy/pasting the link). I don’t mind the twist it might provide, actually, but if anyone is passionately against it I have no problem outlawing it.
Not link, list.

YCHTT, how do you suppose there would be differentiation between "chainsaw diplomacy" and willing to accept defeat? Honor system?

Personally, I am in favor of allowing them. I will repost list.

Yes, honor system. So in essence I support them provided they aren't abused to circumvent gunboat.
tantrumizer (1557 D)
11 Apr 18 UTC
I am against, as it is never going to lead to an actual victory by concession for anyone, so it's just a kind of diplomatic signalling I would have thought we were trying to avoid by playing Fog of War with hidden draw votes. The foggier the better for me.
tantrumizer (1557 D)
11 Apr 18 UTC
If we allow it, we are essentially saying "we haven't the foggiest". Boom boom!
d-ice (1969 D)
11 Apr 18 UTC
My personal opinion is that this is an unnecessary function. Concede has no practical meaning in our games and as such it can ONLY be used as a diplomatic tool. Since our games are gunboat it should thus not be allowed.

Against Concede Votes:
- YCHTT (as diplomacy tool)
- d-ice

Imbalanced map?
It seems as if several maps need some balancing work. For example, England* v Turkey is skewed toward England, and in Rinascimento, the French are virtually at the hands of other players’ wills.

Hello, I have a problem
Hello, I have a problem. I am going away for a few days (tomorrow), and I don't know how to quit the game I am in. There are 36 players, so I cannot reasonably ask for all of them to pause --- besides, there isn't enough time --- so I am stuck.

Playing with fewer players
Hi all!

I know this is probably a noob question, but I need to resolve this issue: is it possible to start a game with fewer players than those normally expected? I tried it once with the Rinascimento variant, but the game didn't launch just because there weren't 12 players.
Thank you in advance!

Very cool you could solve this problem. I did take a look at your code, but I'm absolutely clueless... :-)

If the "Gunboat", "Public Press", or "Per Rulebook" rules are employed, shouldn't the game be automatically "Anon" as well? If it weren't, then players could just PM each other, defeating the purpose.

Question about social norms for players
In a large game, a reliable player asked the mods to extend the game for Easter. The request was general and largely in the name of other player: "Hey guys, it's Easter, and in a big game, some people will probably be traveling to see family." The extension was granted, and requests like that are likely to be accepted.

Hi, long time dipper, first time vdipper. Is it possible to enter orders using an android phone, or do I have to wait to get in front of a PC? The orders field just says "loading order" and nothing else happens.

I've been wondering how well you could write a script to play gunboat diplomacy. Probably not very well (at least to begin with!), but it would be fun to try. I don't really have the time to do this properly right now, but I'm interested to know if it has been done before, or whether anyone would be keen to try at some point in the future.
