Cross-site advertisement: The Tournament Through Time
Just thought I'd put in a plug for the 2018 tournament that I'm running online over at the PlayDiplomacy forums. I know there are lots of variant players over here on vDip, so you might find one or more of these interesting. (Link will be in the response.)

Common Courtesy?
Over the past few weeks i've noticed that there is an awfully lot of NMR's and CDs happening. Many of these take place in a later stage of the game with no extended phase in place.

Whilst I understand that one can adapt rules revolving NMR's and CD's in accordance with his/her wishes when creating a game, yet I was wondering if there is a common courtesy in place that pretty much means players are likely decide to draw/cancel a game after a NMR/CD has a significant impact on the balance of power in a game. This question of course mostly concerns gunboat games, as otherwise you could discuss such a decision with other players.

In any case, I'm getting quite annoyed by how many of the games i'm in are negatively influenced by these kind of players. It doesn't matter whether it actually creates an advantage or disadvantage to me, but it rather takes the enjoyment of the game away.
Just because someone misses orders doesn't mean the game is destroyed. You adapt. You think about how to recover from the lost supports or you cheer your sudden good fortune, and you play on. I will not draw just because someone NMRs or CDs. But that's just my onion pi.

Haha, thanks for actually taking a moment to reply to this question YCHTT.

I understand that there is no ground rule for these situations, nor it being impossible to adapt to those situations. Yet, it was mostly a question out of curiosity. I've been in 10+ player variants where there were at least like 5 NMR's by different players and at least 1 CD. One of these games was a Rinascimento which on itself is already a very unbalanced variant.

I was really just wondering if there is a sort of unofficial rule that most players adhere to regarding NMR's and CD's. This would be that if NMR's/CD's have such a grave influence on the game, that it cannot easily be countered by adaptation. Of course, this would always be extremely arbitrary as some will consider the impact of NMR's/CD's heavier than others.

I feel a bit conflicted about this matter. If you put in a really good effort and end up in a winning position because of an NMR, then maybe nothing terribly wrong has occurred. You could offer the other players a draw/cancel at that point but it might be less than you deserve. And since bets are returned after cancellation, the absent player(s) don't even get a "punishment" (other than their rating dropping) if the game is cancelled.

But then on the other hand, it's a different situation if the whole game is dictated by NMRs/CDs. At some point the game ceases to be Diplomacy IMO. So I guess one has to look at these situations case-by-case. But yeah, of course it sucks if it's Gunboat and you can't even discuss your options.

I've seen games where a single NMR means the death of a nation, though I've also played games where an NMR only sets a nation back 1 SC. It all depends on the game.

I think the solution to all this is to never play gunboat.

The solution to this is the reliability rating. Once VDip obtains enough players with solid reliability ratings, we can begin hosting games with settings that exclude players who behave as described. Unfortunately now, we are forced to fill out games with players who do not commit to games. This means we see many more NMRs and CDs than we should. Gunboat or full press really has no bearing on NMRs.

What I don't get is why recently I've come across 3-4 cases where someone has taken over a CDed position, then just basically put in hold orders every turn. That annoys me a lot!
Reff hit the nail on the head. But I do believe we are getting closer to it so that small games (classic or fewer) tend to find enough quality reliable players, but the world war iii games and anything with 8 or 10 or more nations (Sengoku) have a harder time.
ubercacher16 (2169 D)

The solution to BobRoss's original question is to not play gunboat, or at least play it at your own risk. His question was: what, if any, is the "common courtesy" about that in gunboat games, because it is not a problem in Full or Public press because the players can talk about it. The general consensus was that there wasn't one.

But yes, that is an indirect, and probably much better, way of solving the problem.
gopher's back!

Players can talk about it all they want, but no one is going to call a premature draw just because one player NMR'd or CD'd out of a game. Gunboat has nothing to do with it. If there was such a "common courtesy" custom here, then you wouldn't really need to talk about it. No such custom exists. If you want something like this, then set a gentleman's agreement beforehand that such will be done.

The larger problem with this is that some players will start NMRing for the specific purpose of prematurely ending the games. The *answer* to the problem is creating a body of players committed to the community and the hobby. The best method for identifying such players is the reliability rating. Player reputation carries even more credibility, but the risk in going down that gopher hole is that elitist cliques rise up. The reliability tracks only commitment to the community, not performance. That is how you address the problem. Ending games early because one player is a irresponsible douche is not the answer.

You know, in my beer drinking live at the table diplomacy gams in the old days, dudes would run out for a smoke or food, or someone would get too drunk, or a girlfriend would say "you're playing what?", and then we'd lose a player and we'd carry on. Of course those games always lasted 6 hours and we'd inevitably draw at 3 am so we had very few solos ... so, while I do sense a lot of NMR/CDs right now here, it doesn't bother me a ton, I typically vote draw if it's a big deal and then move on to the next game

Also dying at gopher's point, Russia did CD in the big one after the revolution!

While I am happy to see that this topic/discussion suddenly took flight and became filled with fair arguments and fine entertainment (thanks Gopher, haha), i'd like to emphasise the following.

1. I never intended to say that such a common courtesy ought to be in place. Solely curiosity if there is some sort of consensus (at least among the frequent players) regarding NMR and CD.

2. I'd never jump to a premature end of a game after a few NMR's. Yet some games are a crackling hellfire of passivity and non-participation.

3. I guess the main problems with #2, apart from those people who have shoved their diplomacy commitment in a place where the sun ain't shining, is that there are very few options to your disposal:
- Draw -> Not really desirable as such a draw would not mean a thing or carry an value

- Cancel -> All the hard work of the people who invested time in the game goes to waste. Nor do the people who NMR'd/CD feel any sort of repercussion, they even get their points returned (only their reliability drops, obviously).

- Play on -> adapt to the extent that you can adapt to multiple players not giving a shite.

Whilst I agree with many of the things stated before (about reliability of players, community name etc), perhaps one of my main frustrations about this is that there is no fair way out of a game in the event of many NMR's and CD's. I've only had a very few games where the NMR/CD situation was so grave that i wasn't really invested into continuing them. Yet, if other people do not feel like a cancel/draw/whatever (you're going to be stuck in such a game).

I guess Ruff's suggestion of a gentleman's agreement prior to the game is fair as well. Though i'd be more likely to join games with players of whom i know they're reliable after this happened quite some times in my past games.

In-game messaging with multiple players without Global Chat
Hi everyone,
I was wondering if there is a way to send messages to multiple players without using the Global Chat. It would very practical for players that are in a 2+ people alliances as they don't need to rewrite everything again for each ally. Is there such a thing yet? If not, I hope a developper passes by and makes a note of this. Thanks!

Public messages hidden from non-players
I noticed public messages in games are hidden from non-players, even for finished games. Does anyone know if this was a deliberate decision on vDip? On webDip these are visible to non-players, which is interesting for looking at the player dynamic or end of game commentary.

Quote Association Thread
Hello! I saw a thread like this scrawled on the wall of a Guatemalan insane asylum deep in the jungle primeval. We start with a quote, and you then post the one quote that pops into your mind after you read that quote. The first word is FIRST.

“The key to Springfield has always been Elm Street. The Greeks knew it. The Carthaginians knew it. Now you know it.”

WWII conference room decoration suggestions
I am going to decorate my conference room with a WWII theme. I have a couple of recruiting/propaganda posters and am thinking of putting a big map of the war or a number of individual maps of various theaters basically in their respective areas on a wall. Any suggestions or recommendations on what to buy and where to buy it?
