Cross-site advertisement: The Tournament Through Time
Just thought I'd put in a plug for the 2018 tournament that I'm running online over at the PlayDiplomacy forums. I know there are lots of variant players over here on vDip, so you might find one or more of these interesting. (Link will be in the response.)

Joint Victory?
Is it possible to declare a joint victory in the game?

Common Courtesy?
Over the past few weeks i've noticed that there is an awfully lot of NMR's and CDs happening. Many of these take place in a later stage of the game with no extended phase in place.

In-game messaging with multiple players without Global Chat
Hi everyone,
I was wondering if there is a way to send messages to multiple players without using the Global Chat. It would very practical for players that are in a 2+ people alliances as they don't need to rewrite everything again for each ally. Is there such a thing yet? If not, I hope a developper passes by and makes a note of this. Thanks!

Unfortunately, there is no such feature. Since the limiting factor for the creation of new features is not the lack of ideas, but rather the lack of developers, I don't think such a feauture will be implemented any time soon, unfortunately.
In the meantime, you could use Ctrl+c and Ctrl+v instead of rewriting your messages.

plus,
Just why would you tell ALL your allies the SAME thing?
Har har har,
Gotta divide them before they ally you
Vauban (953 D)
06 Aug 17 UTC
Why? Well, what if I planned an Alliance that has the purpose of eliminating everyone except the Allied players to finish on a draw to share the coins. In order to coordinate our attacks to be successful, it's much easier to a "group chat" instead of copy and pasting
Vauban (953 D)
06 Aug 17 UTC
Even though I agree with you your Holiness but in the above mentioned case, I find a "group chat" rather practical
Vauban (953 D)

Isn't there a developper around here that has the power to do this?
No. The developers can develop, but they can't release to the site, plus there is a laundry list of improvements to be done first. Finally, all the developers here do so out of love for the game. They don't get paid and they don't work here. This sis strictly a contribution of love. So don't harangue them to do things. Remember, you paid nothing for the site.

Yes, I understand. It is such a shame that this website isn't known enough. It has great potential. I have been looking for something like this for ages but the only sites I found were using emails to dispatch orders and didn't have such an advanced playing software such as the one we use here. Anyway, I hope that in a few years vDiplomacy will be at its full strength!
Mercy (2131 D)

VDiplomacy is not the only site for online Diplomacy with this software, though. There is also webdiplomacy.net. Webdiplomacy.net has a larger user base than vDiplomacy, but on vDiplomacy one can play more variants; that is what the v stands for.

Personally I'm with the Pope on this one! Probably the only time in my life I've said that... Getting this request higher on the list for use of rare developer time because you can't be bothered to copy and paste! Sheesh...

You have more than one allied country? You are kidding yourself, right. Or just very optimistic
abadu (1227 D)

@Chumbles: It's still a very different thing to send multiple players the exact same message than _claiming_ to having sent the same message. But I'm definitely very happy with the site as is, just wanted to point out the difference :)
Vauban (953 D)

@Mercy: Thanks for telling me that! I was not aware that these websites existed!

@Strider: I am not being very optimistic. I am just very realistic :-)

@ubercacher16: I am glad that you appreciate my principles on alliances :-) I would love to have a game with you! Let's keep in touch. Once I am past my 20 phases completed I am going to start a new game.

Yeah, maybe. If it is a small Variant, so it won't take to long.

@ubercaher16: How about a classic? Maybe it's too long?
Vauban (953 D)

Yeah, I love this quote! It's from Talleyrand. It's not word for word because I couldn't find it on the web but it's along these lines
ubercacher16 (2169 D)
07 Aug 17 UTC
Yeah Classic would be to long, maybe Atlantic Colonies?
ubercacher16 (2169 D)

Or another Variant with 6 or less players.

Atlantic colonies? Sure! I would love to try that map!

This is a feature I mentioned for development here a few times over the years, but as far as I know, was never taken up in anyway. It was always a great feature of the old electronic Diplomacy Judges and helped make press with multi-partner alliances more efficient, especially in large games.

@Vauban & ubercacher16....As far as I am aware, that is half of semi-well-known joke about "ladies" rather than a quote by Talleyrand. Warren Buffett got a bit of abuse from "feminists" for publicly re-telling such a "sexist" old joke a few months ago.

Asked "What's the difference between a diplomat and a lady?" the reply came:

If a diplomat says, "yes," he means "Maybe."
If a diplomat says, "Maybe," he means "No."
If a diplomat says, "No," he's no diplomat.

But on the other hand,

If a lady says, "No," she means "Maybe."
If a lady says, "Maybe," she means "Yes."
If a lady says, "Yes," she's no lady.
ubercacher16 (2169 D)

@gopher27: That's hilarious.
Vauban (953 D)
08 Aug 17 UTC
@gopher27: I am pretty sure it's from Talleyrand. What I wrote is not a word to word quote but it is along these lines. Maybe Buffet used it for his own purposes.

Public messages hidden from non-players
I noticed public messages in games are hidden from non-players, even for finished games. Does anyone know if this was a deliberate decision on vDip? On webDip these are visible to non-players, which is interesting for looking at the player dynamic or end of game commentary.

Due to unforeseen circumstances this summer, I am in need of a replacement in 3 of the games I am playing. They are all anonymous Gunboat/Public Press games and are decent positions. PM me if interested and I will leave relevant information in my notes.

Quote Association Thread
Hello! I saw a thread like this scrawled on the wall of a Guatemalan insane asylum deep in the jungle primeval. We start with a quote, and you then post the one quote that pops into your mind after you read that quote. The first word is FIRST.

“The key to Springfield has always been Elm Street. The Greeks knew it. The Carthaginians knew it. Now you know it.”

WWII conference room decoration suggestions
I am going to decorate my conference room with a WWII theme. I have a couple of recruiting/propaganda posters and am thinking of putting a big map of the war or a number of individual maps of various theaters basically in their respective areas on a wall. Any suggestions or recommendations on what to buy and where to buy it?

Greeting vDippers.
It has come to my attention that quite a few players are unaware of the site rules. If you're a new player, or a vet and you haven't read over the site rules I'd urge you to do so. http://vdiplomacy.net/rules.php#Rules
