Issue with South American Supremacy Map
Hey, I'm getting ready to start a game with some friends using the South American Supremacy map. It appears the map is starting with a fleet in Bogata, which is a landlocked territory. the variant homepage lists Bogata as starting with an army. Is there is a good way to correct this? Thanks!

I apologize if this is a repeat question or if it's found somewhere obvious, but I'm brand new to vDiplomacy and I can't seem to find what the difference is between the two types of what I believe are SC markings on the Bye Bye Federalism map.

Option to play a variant with fewer than the max number of players?
Hello all,

I and two of my friends love playing 3 player diplo games together. Having gone through the different 3 player maps, I'm wondering if there is a way to play on some of the larger variants, but with just 3 people? For instance, I'd love it if we could play a 3 player game on Fall of the American Empire IV.

Policy For Site Unavailability/Glitch
What do you mods think about having some kind of policy posted to address when the site goes down or is not functional in the future? You have chosen to cancel the 1st game of Divided States over this, but the last time I was involved in a game that had this happen, the last phase was replayed. So currently, the response isn't consistent.

WTA vs Draw-Disvaluated Scoring
What about adding Draw-Disvaluated Scoring to vDip?

It's a mix of Calhamer Scoring (aka Winner-Takes-All) with Draw-Zero Scoring, and has the fortunate effect of pushing players towards a solo unless a draw is absolutely necessary. Solos work like in WTA, but draws are different.

PPSC vs SoS
I couldn’t find the answer in Help.
I know PPSC means in a solo the points are allocated based on supply centre count while in a draw it reverts to an equal split of points like DSS/WTA
For SoS over on WebDip, in a draw the points are allocated on a sum of Squares principle. But Help section doesn’t say what happens in a solo. Same method or reverts to winner takes all? I’m assuming SoS whether draw or solo but checking
Thanks

Thank you for all the positive feedback! I am really excited for this project to be playable, which hopefully won't be too long from now! I just finished the large and (relatively) small preview maps. I just need to create the PHP maps before I can get it on a lab.

Small map:
https://i.imgur.com/U1ZEQKo.png

Large map:
https://i.imgur.com/mtbWxyT.png

Before I make the PHP maps and get it on the Russian lab, I would like some feedback regarding balancing. While I have tried to make the map as balanced as possible, there may still be some glaring issues I haven't spotted that will severely harm a nation's performance (such as North Africa in WW4v6.2). To make this less likely, I tried to guarantee that every nation (barring any major tactical errors or year 1 coalitions) can begin year 2 with 5-7 supply centers.

Information about the map:
573 land/island territories
183 sea territories
756 total territories
277 supply centers
158 starting supply centers

The rules as they are:
1. After the chaotic 2020 election, the country fractured into a many-sided civil war. The game begins in Autumn 2020 with a build phase.

2. There are neutral SCs within state boundaries. These are marked with a solid-dot supply center with a neutral box around them.

3. The number of SCs a state starts with are determined by its population (indirectly through # of electoral college votes). States with less than 20 electors start with 3 SCs, states with 20-30 electors start with 4 SCs, and states with more than 30 electors start with 5 SCs.

4. The game is build-anywhere.

5. A unit may be ordered to transform from an army to a fleet or vice versa at any coastal SC (rivers count!) as long as it is not attacked that season.

6. Island territories with their borders at sea are considered coastal territories, but they can also be used to convoy.

7. The oceans and great lakes are divided up into sealanes, which obey the same rules as in the Mars and WW4: Sealanes variants.

8. There are several strait crossings where armies and fleets can move directly between 2 territories that aren't adjacent by land. These are marked with a maroon line.

9. Fleets can move along and across rivers, although the rivers themselves are not considered territories. They do not impede land movement.

10. There are several territories that appear in multiple areas of the map. These are marked with arrow icons between their parts. In addition, YUK is adjacent to SSK and ABT.

11. The Four Corners Monument is the only point on the map where 4 provinces meet. At this point, units CAN move diagonally.

12. When the US govt. collapsed, the Mexican and Canadian governments followed suit. Drug lords and paramilitary groups occupied several of the more distant towns and cities. Any supply centers more than 2 moves away from a home supply center are occupied by a neutral standing army that will disband if it is dislodged.

13. The victory condition is 100 SCs (out of 277).
>Note: I want suggestions on this one. 100 SCs is rather arbitrary and will be incredibly tough to conquer, though fewer SCs might make it so more distant powers have no way of stopping a solo rush.

All other Diplomacy rules apply as normal.

Holy guacamole -- outrageous! This should be quite a play when it's done.
Technostar - love how this is all coming together. Looks amazing!

I think the 100 SC victory condition is sensible based on the size, but I'm foreshadowing you'll probably get some disgruntled 2nd/3rd/4th place getters after a few games who'll feel a majority should be needed. But you can always change the victory condition later on if the community and yourself support the idea.

Well done!
RUFFHAUS 8 (2490 D)
17 Sep 17 UTC
I would recommend that you set victory conditions at the 50%+1 level unless you have a compelling reason not to. A "victory" has a serious set of consequences in a community so driven by points and ratings. With as many players as this will involve anyone achieving victory on this map should have to earn it. You can always change the victory condition to be lower if players want a shorter game. If it's an arbitrary limit, then why ignore a default principle of the game?
Technostar (1302 D)
17 Sep 17 UTC
Amby and Ruffhaus, thank you for your feedback about it. I based the 100 SC number off of WW4 6.2. So far, not a single person has been able to solo 6.2, though Retillion came within 7 centers of it as Saudi Arabia.

However, WW4 6.2 is a different map with different properties from Divided States. For one, Divided States has 2.72 territories per unit, which makes it much harder to stalemate. WW4 only has 2.14, while Classic has 2.2. You'll need to control a lot more territory to have any shot at a stalemate line. In addition, the transform option removes any possible bottlenecks caused by a shoreline.

I'll set the victory condition to 139 centers and update it if that number proves to be impossible.
Sounds good Technostar.

Update:
I have finished the PHP maps for this (all 3 of them, I made sure to split them) and created a separate image for the name overlay. I managed to set up a personal instance of vDip to test the map (a difficult feat considering I had no prior experience with PHP), though I was unable to get the variant to load properly so I could use "Edit Map" on it. I've PM'd Kaner about it to see if he could help me set up the custom code, so we'll see if he can help me get it to work. If anyone else knows anything about the coding side of variants, your help would be appreciated.

I also made a few balancing tweaks after a friend and I analyzed the starting positions. The changes include:
- Added a territory SE of Lincoln, Nebraska to prevent having 3 adjacent home SCs
- Changed Indiana's home SC from GAR to FWY and split FWY and TOL with TIP and DAY. This makes it so Indiana no longer starts with 2 home SCs under threat.
- Added BRL (Berlin, NH) as a colored neutral center in northern New Hampshire. This makes Maine and Vermont more likely to come into contact and conflict, giving Maine an extra neighbor.
- Win conditions are now 140 (out of 278).
https://i.imgur.com/nkG61gH.png

There are probably countless other ways I could balance this variant further, though they probably won't be obvious until we can test it. These were just the glaringly obvious flaws - things that would severely cripple a nation's start or unavoidably force nations into an early war.

Update:
After messing around with the PHP code for a few months, I kept running into technical difficulties. The WW4 code that already exists only works for up to 512 different land territories, and it was proving incredibly difficult for me to make my own code to replace it. Previously, the map had 575 land territories, though I was able to go through the map and scrap 67 non-SC territories to bring the total down to a manageable 508 land territories.

Here is the map in its present state:
https://i.imgur.com/TPgyXo3.png
This sounds really cool! Thanks for all your hard work!
Technostar - put simply, you rock.

Even reducing the number of land territories by 67, this is still an AMAZING map and I can't wait to play it!

Thanks again for your great work and persistence!

Update: I have finished adding territory data to the map (693 territories in total). Unless any major complications pop up, all I have left to do before getting the map on vDip is to add adjacency data (a long process but not a painful one), add custom code, and run a test game on my local instance of vDip.

I have finally finished adding adjacency data to the map. The custom scrips that I still need to add (transform option, build-anywhere, start with build phase, island convoys, neutral colored SCs, and neutral standing armies) all exist elsewhere, so it shouldn't take any longer than a few days to make them work with Divided States. I have a few minor tweaks to make to the map image (UPP, STJ, BER, PIT, and GSL sw names are all repeated by accident and SNT in Texas should start as neutral for balance), but none of those should take more than a few munites to do. I cannot make any promises, but I hope to get the variant released by the end of this month.

For those of you curious what the adjacency map looks like, here's the beautiful mess:

For the map development it enough to start it on a local server. But about test-games with real players?
Technostar (1302 D)
12 Jan 18 UTC
@Flame Due to the immense size of the variant, a full formal test game before releasing the map on vDip is virtually impossible. However, we could run a 10-player test game where each player controls 5 separate countries (Spread out across the US to avoid impacting the early game as much as possible) on LabDip if you are okay with running such a game on your server.
Flame (1073 D)
14 Jan 18 UTC
We only should test the working capacity of the variant. We will never find out whether is variant balanced or not - cause the map is too big to find it out at once.

UPDATE:
Divided States is ready for release!

After running several test games on my localhost, I am no longer running across any bugs. The gameplay in the early stages of the game is balanced enough that no nation has an overwhelming advantage. With those things in mind, Divided States is stable and playable enough for a release on vDiplomacy. I have sent Oli the release build, so with any luck, he can get the variant online within the next few days. This has been a fun journey, and I'm as excited as any of you to get a game going!
Technostar (1302 D)
07 Feb 18 UTC
Here is the final version of the starting map:
https://i.imgur.com/z09RRjs.png

And here are the background information and custom rules that appear on the variant page:

Background

After the 2016 election, many people were left wondering how the United States would survive such division. While the nation has held together so far, what if that unity disappeared?

Divided States is set in 2021, after the chaotic 2020 election caused the US state governments to lose faith in the federal government and each other and declare independence. Yet, as these state governments reasserted control within their own borders, they realized that their own resources were not enough and began to look outwards.

With the collapse of the United States, the Canadian and Mexican governments were quick to follow. Drug lords and paramilitary groups took control of several Mexican and Canadian cities, though their lack of unity makes them easy targets for a modern military.

Rules

Build Anywhere:
Players may build in any vacant Supply Center they own.

Starting Conditions:
Each state starts with at least 3 Supply Centers under their control, though some states start with more due to their large populations. Pennsylvania, Illinois, New York, and Florida each start with 4 Supply Centers, while California and Texas start with 5.

Custom Start:
The game starts with a build phase for every power. If a player does not check in during the first build phase his status is immediately set to "Left" and the country gets a "default build" so another player can take over without a weak start.

Colored Neutral Centers:
Most states start with neutral Supply Centers within their modern boundaries. These Supply Centers are colored, but have a neutral box around the Supply Center icon. They do not count towards a player's build phase until they are occupied at the end of a fall, at which point the neutral box will disappear.

Transform Option:
Players may transform an army into a fleet or vice versa at a coastal Supply Center during the diplomacy phase. The unit is considered to be holding and may be support-held, though the transformation will fail if the unit is attacked.

Alaska and Hawaii:
Alaska and Hawaii are separated from the rest of the US and are outside the area this map covers. As a result, Alaska and Hawaii are shown separated from the rest of the US by a 2-line border. Hawaiian territories are connected to the rest of the map like normal, though some Alaskan territories appear in multiple areas of the map. These territories are marked by arrows in their separate sections. In addition, while Yukon (YUK) does not appear in multiple parts of the map, it is adjacent to Saskatchewan (SSK) and Alberta (ABT).

Panama Canal and Northwest Passage:
The Panama Canal and Northwest Passage sealanes (explained below) also appear in multiple areas of the map. These sealanes are the only naval connection between the Atlantic and Pacific oceans.

Neutral Standing Armies:
Supply Centers in Canada and Mexico that cannot be reached within the first year are occupied by neutral standing armies. FRU, SGU, MAZ, and DUR support-hold any adjacent neutral army, while the remainder only hold. Neutral armies disband when dislodged.

Four Corners Monument:
The Four Corners Monument between Monument Valley (MNV), Navajo (NAV), Zuni Mountains (ZUN), and Colorado Plateau (COP) is the only point on the map where four land territories meet. At this point, units ARE allowed to move diagonally regardless of whether there are any units in the other corners, so a unit in ZUN may move to MNV and a unit in NAV may move to COP.

Strait Crossings and Bridges:
Some coastal territories, while separated from each other, are considered adjacent due to a bridge or strait crossing. These are marked by a red line connecting the two coastal territories and may be crossed by both armies and fleets regardless of who owns the waters between them.

Rivers and Canals:
The St. Lawrence/Great Lakes river system, the Strait of Canso, the Hudson and East Rivers, the Delaware River, the Mississippi, Atchafalaya, Ohio, Illinois, and Missouri Rivers, and the Colombia River are navigable by fleets and are represented by light blue lines between provinces. In addition, the Erie Canal in New York is also navigable and functions the same as a river. Fleets may move along and across rivers. Rivers do not obstruct land movement.

Islands:
Some island territories also control some water around the island. These islands can house armies, but they must be convoyed there or built there. Fleets on islands cannot convoy.

Sealanes

Sealanes are an addition to the map designed to bring coastal states into contact with more neighbors and prevent stalemate lines.

1. Oceans and the Great Lakes are divided into Sea Regions, which are further subdivided into Overseer Zones (OZs) and Sealanes (SLs). Sea Regions are represented by a bold line around multiple sea territories that share the same 3-letter abbreviation surrounding a bolded box.

2. OZs are designated with a bold box around their abbreviations. OZs are adjacent to any OZs in adjacent Sea Regions, all SLs in their own Sea Region, any SLs directly adjacent to their Sea Region, and any normal territories adjacent to their Sea Region.

MSB is adjacent to:

OZs: NWA, GME

Internal SLs: MSB n, MSB w, MSB e, MSB s

External SLs: GME sw, GME e, NWA w

Normal Territories: SAC, BID, POM, SLM, BOS, CPC, VYS, CNS, HFX, NVS

3. Sealanes are adjacent to their OZ, all other SLs in their Sea Region, any OZs in directly adjacent Sea Regions, any directly adjacent SLs, and any adjacent normal territories.

MSB n is adjacent to:

MSB, MSB e, MSB w, MSB s, GME, GME e, NVS, HFX, CNS

4. All territories within a Sea Region are separate and each may be occupied by a fleet, regardless of its nationality. Keep in mind that new routes for convoys and retreats now exist.
