New Variant: 1913
1913 is a revision of the Classic map, having both balance and historical accuracy at its heart.

Imbalanced map?
It seems as if several maps need some balancing work. For example, England* v Turkey is skewed toward England, and in Rinascimento, the French are virtually at the hands of other players’ wills.

It exists and it seems balanced, though the current map is ugly (a simple map made from Mr. Norman's mapper , the tool that generates a 'map file' - the borders file)

I read somewhere here, there or overthere, someone missed such a variant... so here it is!

http://www.variantbank.org/results/rules/i/iberian.htm

It was once installed at the ustr judge, thus someone might have the RP files for this, but since we'd also like to see a new beautiful map, the missing text files are a minor issue... any artist step forward?

doesn't look too difficult. I might take a stab at it unless someone else wants to
wonder why they didn't include the rest of the balearic islands and the north african coast in this variant...the Banu Ghaniya were a separate (and hostile dynasty) to the Almohads in the Granada and Sevilla. It would be a good sixth player addition.

Of course, as you asked for a pure map translation, that's what I'll do, but I might make a second version that adds a sixth player and includes north africa if that's all right

how's this for Macario's Iberian? I think all my adjacencies are correct now, might want to doublecheck me though. I wanted to do national boundaries for Portugal, Castile, Leon, Aragon, and Al-Andalus, but couldn't get it to look right. Oli's normal shading during implementation should do the trick though.

@Benjamin that Southern monarchy looks pretty overpowered to me, can grab two SCs in the first year for sure or even three, if he's lucky, and then he has no direct neighbours, as opposed to everyone else in the north, which is pretty clustered...

These does not include the rgn file for which RP asks for a BW map I don't have

I thought these files were useful, so you do you do not have to code it from scratch??

@God: A strong muslim power makes the feling for the Reconquista!
Note that a power having overly good prospects is not a problem - the others must realise this and stop them before they get too far ahead (e.g., Germany in 1900, Ben's Nagashino). Now, a power with overly poor prospects is a problem, because they will always be an easy source of supply centres to their neighbours early on in the game.
there's much on this map that seems a bit unbalanced to me (would never want a seat as Portugal, with zero secure dots and almost certain conflict with Al-Andalus) but I made a pure map translation here, no adjustments to the design. I may tinker with a version of my own later, perhaps including Banu Ganiya and Navarre as playable powers.

As for RP files, that is proving problematic. The source map had no external border to the Iberian peninsula (notice the green touches the blue, no black border in between). While this is aesthetically pleasing (to me) it makes creating the BW and Borders maps for RP a major pain. I will try and see what I can do, but this will take time. If anyone knows of another workaround to create a thin border around the perimeter of Iberia (or make this unnecessary in RP) I'm all ears. Otherwise, this is what cames out in monochrome, and the edge provinces bleed into the surrounding sea zones when using the RP Region Tool to create the .rgn file.

https://drive.google.com/open?id=18VPw88e6r_PUwZVvxMJu_kuH0uBSiP09
never mind. found a way. BW/Border map and matching color map coming shortly. I'll miss the no-border aesthetic, but oh well.

Include Azores between OAN and OAM - the historical liberty already taken including Madeira justifies it.
And maybe make Portugal a normal one fleet power, then?
The extra SC makes the total even, though.

W.r.t. the BW map for rgn file, well, if I had time I could proceed on pixel by pixel at paint brush...
Note: these three files must be used together in RP to work correctly. Yesterday's version of the map should be discarded.

If I do end up making a Reconquista variant down the road, I will probably include the Azores and many other changes. Refining Balkans and Sengoku are my current projects though, and getting SE Asia 900 ready for release.

As for Iberian, I wanted to make a pure map translation without changing the design. If you want to edit Macario's design and make some additions (like Azores) though, no objection at all here. I recommend adding the change to the BW file, then copy/pasting it to the color one (notice the Borders and BW files are identical.) No fancy software needed, everything I did here was a few hours' work in MS Paint only, from a stock map I found on d-maps.com.

We can use the non-sea-border version without any problems here once the files are converted. What color-scheme do you want? vDip colors, or the neutral-territories in green?
JECE (1534 D)

I would keep this map as originally designed. It looks interesting and is pretty simple in design.

If someone were to go about making a new, ambitious variant set in Reconquista Iberia, that would be awesome, but I think it's a different project. Maybe one of the Taifa periods would be more balanced?
whatever colors CCR wants works for me!

It‘s not really that important. I just need to place all the units by hand. But I can get all other information from the other files.
I need a starting date, a 1-liner explanation and a color scheme (please name a variant of your choosing and tell me what color I should assign to each country). Should I use custom unit icons?

I started developing the variant, but time is really problematic.
I have already the smallmap and the borders, but I need the smallmap-Names (and the SCs). And as a 2nd step the largemap with SCs.

Coding is already done. So once I have the maps and Names-overlay I can upload the variant. Any volunteers?

Also, are we leaving the province names as Macario Reyes did - in Spanish? I am in favor of translating them to English for simplicity and user readability sake.

On the subject of names, it is the Emirate of Granada NOT Al-Andalus; (political entity: Emirate/Caliphate of Córdoba - Muslim Spain whose borders included most of Castille etc.)...
Enriador (1507 D)
31 Mar 18 UTC
@Chumbles

Technically speaking, 'Al-Andalus' means any part of the Iberian Peninsula under Islamic control. So, the Nasrid Emirate of Granada *was* Al-Andalus - a much reduced part of it, but still belonging to a continuum.

I agree that it should be named 'Granada' as it is more used, but should we alter the author's design for such a minor difference? I confess I don't know.

Hello, I have a problem. I am going away for a few days (tomorrow), and I don't know how to quit the game I am in. There are 36 players, so I cannot reasonably ask for all of them to pause --- besides, there isn't enough time --- so I am stuck.

Playing with fewer players
Hi all!

I know this is probably a noob question, but I need to resolve this issue: is it possible to start a game with fewer players than those normally expected? I tried it once with the Rinascimento variant, but the game didn't launch just because there weren't 12 players.
Thank you in advance!

Question about social norms for players
In a large game, a reliable player asked the mods to extend the game for Easter. The request was general and largely in the name of other player: "Hey guys, it's Easter, and in a big game, some people will probably be traveling to see family." The extension was granted, and requests like that are likely to be accepted.

Option to play a variant with fewer than the max number of players?
Hello all,

I and two of my friends love playing 3 player diplo games together. Having gone through the different 3 player maps, I'm wondering if there is a way to play on some of the larger variants, but with just 3 people? For instance, I'd love it if we could play a 3 player game on Fall of the American Empire IV.
