ER Team Game Revival
Hey Folks! I was recently thinking about the Europa Renevatio Team game we did a couple years ago and I think we can do it again, better this time. Among the improvements, it may be ideal to determine the teams ahead of time and make them public so we can try to come up with a "balanced" set of 9 teams of 4. Would anyone else (err... 35 others?) want to give it a shot?

Interested in organising a game for folks interested in playing other big hitters. Not sure what the cut off should be, but would be good to get a mass of quality players interested and then we'll land on a general consensus if some aren't as big hitters as others.

Not as complex as '13th Century Mongolian Empire' but looks like good fun too.

I would much rather do this in a separate thread, but since I am supposed to discuss variant developments here....

Dawn of the Enlightenment has been updated. The map has numerous changes, but more important are the rules changes and simplification. The variable strength unit and Supply Center concept has been dropped, and the multiple unit High Seas concept has been converted into a rule similar to, but simpler than, the Sea Lanes rule. The five Oceanic provinces are merely indicators of adjacency. The seven High Seas provinces in each Oceanic province are all adjacent to the neighboring sea provinces. The previous and current versions of the variant are linked here, and the rules are on the maps.

Old Version: https://image.ibb.co/kKBMSf/Dot-E-v1-2.png

Current Version: https://image.ibb.co/dJn9f0/Dot-E-v2-0-B-Developmental.png

Comments and suggestions are welcome.

Thank you, David, for your great work !
The current Version seems great ! Do you know if it will be implemented here, at vdip ?

I have please, for the current Version, one suggestion for a correction, and one question for a clarification.

1° My suggestion for a correction.
The rules text says :
"By way of example, NA1 is adjacent to NA2, NA3, NA4, NA5, NA6, NA7, Greenland Sea, Icelandic Sea, [...] "
However, the name of the Sea on the map is Norwegian Sea and not Icelandic Sea. So, either the name in the text should be "Norwegian Sea", or the name on the map should be "Icelandic Sea".

2° My question.
Would you please clarify the rule regarding movement to, or within, the five Oceanic Provinces ?
Indeed the rules text says :
"The five Oceanic Provinces [...] are merely indicators of adjacency."
However, the rules text then says :
"There are Seven High Seas Provinces within each Oceanic Province. These may be occupied in the same manner and function like any other sea Province."

That sounds to me like a contradiction. So, how does it work ?
For example, does one have to order Bay of Biscay-NAO or does he have to chose one specific High Sea Province with, for example, the order Bay of Biscay-NAO1 ?
But then, what would happen if simultaneosuly another player orders Gulf of Saint Lawrence-NAO1 ? Would these two Fleets bounce despite the fact that the northern half of the Atlantic Ocean is a really huge surface ? In that case, some orders could succeed or fail because of a ridiculous and random parameter ?! And that could give an unfair (because random) advantage to a third player who would order simultaneously, in our example, Sea of Belem-NAO2. If that was the case, that really seems to be a problem.
Also, can one player send Fleets in several High Sea Provinces of the same Oceanic Province ? I suppose so. And so, what would be the maximum number of Fleets that can be sent in an Oceanic Province ? I suppose 7. But then, can combat occur within a High Sea Province ?

Thank you, Retillion. In response to your comments:

It would be wonderful if DotE were implmented here. Up to people to put the work in I guess, since I don't have the skills, though I could probably help with the scut work. It should be much easier (other than the sheer size) with the new, simpler ruleset.

Good catch on Icelandic Sea. There WAS such a province, but it has been eliminated in the latest draft.

Yes the High Seas province needs to be specified by the player, so "WP5" and "SA7" are both province names, but "EP" and "IO" are not. An order without tge number would be ambiguous. Yes, if there were no communication between players they can bounce if both were ordered to the same High Sea province, just like if there were Fleets in London and Belgium and the players guessed whether to go to North Sea or the Channel. I do not see a problem there. This is still a good stalemate avoidance mechanism, without the rules difficulties that would arise if multiple units were allowed to occupy the same province.

Yes as to your various final questions. A player could try to occupy all of the High Seas provinces in an Oceanic area, but putting 7 fleets out there would probably leave them dangerously exposed elsewhere. Combat can occur in a High Seas province in the same way as any other province. I will make some changes to the explanation in the ruleset to make this a little clearer.

I think you made the right calls, Mr. Cohen. While I imagine it would be a huge amount of work, I do wonder if basing your map on a different projection of the earth might help its readability. You have so many nodes clustered in a very tiny Europe; it might actually benefit you to switch to something like a Mercator projection.
Mr. Cohen is my father. He doesn't play Diplomacy. LOL

Thanks for your vote of confidence.

It took me a long time to get this map to work. My first prototype map was half again as large as this brute! A Mercator projection would create as many problems as it would solve. What is needed is probably some sort of exotic projection combined with strategic distortion of various map areas. Too much work and WAY beyond my skills.

Or even make an inset? That way Europe is as large
Poor Tasmania. Left out again...

(for non-Australians, it is a common unfortunate mistake many do many visually depicting Australia to leave out Tasmania - the island to the SE of the continent. It's funny as no one ever forgets Iceland, Madagascar, Sri Lanka etc.)

But apart from that, wow, mind blown. Can't wait to see how the half strength stuff works in reality.
(first "many" should be "that"... need to proof read!)

The map of Dawn of the Enlightenment is easily and perfectly readable everywhere, even in Europe.
By clicking on the map, you can zoom it. You can even zoom it many many more times by pressing CTRL+.
The Divided States (variantID=105) map has even more smaller (on the screen) spaces in the New England area, and that is not a problem at all.

As a matter of fact, I find that David's Dawn of the Enlightenment map is VERY nice and very well drawn.

@ The Ambassador :
Europeans landed in Tasmania for the first time during the end of the 18th Century, in 1772, if I am correct.
Since a game of Dawn of the Enlightenment begins in the year 1701, it is logical that Tasmania is not present on the map.

I thought about an inset, bsiper, but that would have made the map even larger overall.

Tasmania. LOL Amby, I almost left Australia itself off the map entirely. I really have no historical justification to include it. Just gameplay considerations.
P.S. Amby, I think you are confusing the two versions. The half strength units and Supply Centers were in the earlier version, but I eliminated them, along with modifying the High Seas rule. The rules worked well, but were VERY complicated to adjudicate.

Mama Mia! Beautiful rendition David. The simplification and High Seas zones look solid. Was really interested in playing with the variable strength unit and supply center concepts, which along with the High Seas zones, would be the strengths and intrigue of this variant to me, but understand why you had to drop them. I don't see any problem with units being ordered to the same High Seas provinces. Will look forward to playing this one. Any ETA on when it will be ready to go on vDip?
@David - thanks, sorry about the confusion re: half strength.

@Ret - actually the exact opposite. Dutch explorer Abel Tasman "discovered" (from a European perspective) the island of Tasmania in 1642. The east coast of Australia on the map was again discovered from a European perspective in 1770 by Captain James Cook.

So in fact Tasmania should be on the map and the Australian east coast should not. To similarly complicate matters further historically Tasman discovered New Zealand also in 1642 (not on the Enlightenment map) but Cook discovered the straight between the North and South Islands of New Zealand also in 1770.

And of course it wasn't until 1798 that Matthew Flinders discovered Tasmania was a separate island from the Australian continent (it was assumed before then to be connected to the mainland.)

Furthermore the one and only SC on the Australian continent is geographically where Perth is (interestingly home of Kestas who created the original php Dip code we use on this site), however the Australian continent in 1701 had no permanent settlements (the hundreds of indigenous Aboriginal tribes had tribal lands but would move from camp to camp - where the SC is located wasn't settled until 1829), so historically Australia on this map should have no SCs, unless the intent is to represent resources, in which case the Australian continent should bountifully have at least 2, maybe 3 SCs, and of course NZ would need at least 1 SC.
I had to put the dot *somewhere*, Amby. Sticking it where Sydney would one day be just seemed too much of a cliché.

It seems to me odd that you all are talking about Tasmania when Ireland, Sicily, Sardinia, and Corsica are all missing.
I only responded to The Tasmania comment. As to those other islands, they either already belong to Powers which do not need another initial dot, or they are not located in a useful spot.

Hello

I would love to propose an interesting dip variant which is very flexiable and enjoyable. We used to play it face to face. And each time there were lots of fun.

Here is a brife introduction of the rules by Edi birsan. It would be great if we can play on vdip website.

Escalation Diplomacy Variant
by EdiBirsan

The Rules

Each player takes a different-colored set of pieces.Decide who goes in what order during the Escalation Placement phase of the game.
Decide on the number of pieces players will place during the Escalation. There commended numbers of pieces are listed below.

2 players:12
3 players:8
4 players:6
5 players:5
6 players:4
7 ormoreplayers:3

Starting with the first player, each player gets a turn to place one piece on the map. This is the Escalation.

Players who go first have more choices but those who place later have more information to react to. The first piece can be an Army or a Fleet, and it can be on any legal, unoccupied space, including a Supply Center.
Continue placing pieces one at a time until the agreed number of pieces is placed.
Each player owns any Supply Center containing one of his pieces at the start.

Continue until the agreed number of pieces are placed.
Play the Spring‘01and the Fall‘01 seasons as in a normal game. As part of the Winter‘01resolution, how-ever, each player writes down three supply centers under his control that he will consider his “homecenters”
(where he can build units) for the rest of the game. Players are not limited to declaring traditional home
centers.Their centers don’t even need to be adjacent. For example a player could declare Brest, London, and
Naples as his three home centers if he owns them in the Winter of 1901.

Discussions can be limited to table side only (all discussions open to all), none (“known as the Gunboat style of play”), or traditional, private talks.
For four or fewer players, it’s recommended that there be no discussions
except at the table.

As a teaching device for two players, increase the number of starting pieces to 17. This makes the Escalation phase more intense and stresses the need to plan ahead.

Sort of like playing multi-player GO game.
Where to place your unit? Army or fleet? How to choose home SCs to your advantage? Can be played with-2-34 players on a standard map.
DIY the order to place the units. And I love 2 player the most.

Anyone any interest? Thanks. 谢谢!
Mercy (2131 D)

I think such a thing would only work for online Diplomacy if all players placed their units on the board simultaneously. Else, they would have to wait too long during the turns of the other players. The concept is interesting though and it lets me think of variantID=35.

[Speed Europa variant] moving from Burgundy to Ruhr should not be possible
Hello,

As noticed by Tyran (user ID 2518) in the game "Wolf Pack v3" (game ID 58137) armies may move from Burgundy to Ruhr and vice versa (see the Map info tab of the variant's page) while the map doesn't say that. Maps on the external variant homepage also, so I suppose it is an error in the code, not the map.
