vDip uses almost the same rules as webDip:

So, it's worth keeping in mind that saying "Language may be offensive because some of my friends don't understand common decency" doesn't mean you don't have to follow those rules.

I had to reread this twice before reading the "don't", maybe that's what ScubaSteve saw?

My point was that putting a language disclaimer on one’s games is not sufficient to bypass rules on racism, sexism, etc.

Why do such rules exist? I understand the doxxing one, but why can't a person say whatever they wish on the internet? I think it would be sufficient punishment for players to simply have the negative effects in game for offending others, why must the site of such rules? Also what qualifies as raciest or sexist? Does something have to be negative to be raciest? or must it simply by speech that points out a typical difference in two races? Can one be raciest against white people and sexist against men?

I think these questions are important and the issues are relevant, but I don't think that Vdip has the right or responsibility to make rules about what kind of words people write in games and on forums.

Why would any of those hypotheticals actually happen in a game? Racist and sexist language add absolutely nothing to Diplomacy, and actively foster a worse environment for players who aren't expecting it.

The hypothetical is that if someone got angry and said some things that were offensive to someone that they would be damaged in game because of it. And of course it makes a worse environment, but one could argue that anything remotely offensive to someone fosters a negative environment. Players get offended every game, we don't stop that, in fact we encourage it was part of dip.

My point is simply banning "raciest" and "sexist" press is oversimplifying the issue at heart.

If you're being racist or sexist to the point where mods have to take action against you, you probably know damn well that you're acting in an unacceptable way. It's pretty easy to avoid these "hypotheticals" by not being a human dumpster fire. If you wanna act like that, do it in private. I'm in a game with OP's friend group right now and the global chat has been so full of instances of the n-word and other racist language that mods had to issue a warning due to complaints, so I find the basis of this whole thread and of OP and friends' innocence to be laughable

...I don't understand this at all. Oli owns this private site. It's his, he pays for it, codes it, and can do what he wishes with it. If he decided he loves thanos and wanted to ban everyone with an even or odd username tomorrow he would have that right. It'd be dumb, but he has that right. The site reflects on him so he asks people behave in exchange for the free gaming service he offers. Seems perfectly reasonable to me.

Why are we being so acerbic to these newcomers? They haven't even gotten familiar with vDip yet!

Sexist remarks would be pretty gratuitous, though. I can't think of any reasons for them here.

"Racist", dunno. If it fit with the variant and was tongue-in-cheek, I'd personally have no issue with it. But it remains a game, so it'd still be out of place if someone was to randomly spew hateful banter.

There is a difference between hate speech and roleplaying a jerk, but in most cases the latter is simply disguising itself in order to spread the former.

As said before, it's up to common sense and the website administration's discretion to identify violations. We can place our trust in vDip's mods in that regard.

It's less about being acerbic and more about immediately correcting a misconception stated in their opening post: that vDip is somehow more permissive of their behavior than WebDip, from which alex.noggle received a ban.

Again, this is not true; vDip has the same rules as WebDip in that regard. They've also expressed hostility to a mod present on both sites, which seems like a rather poor decision in the context of an introduction.

Listen, when I said some of my friends don't understand common decency, I mean that about 1 out of 10 will probably say whatever they want and they won't care about the consequences. I do care about the consequences, especially after what happened to my account of WebD (which annoys the hell out of me). So when I said that, I'm just trying to give a fare warning to anyone who joins any of our games, but I will not be offensive, and if I am then just DM me and tell me so that I can stop.
Now, @JmO, I strongly dislike the fact that the owner could ban anyone he wanted for no reason at all, but I guess that I can see both sides of the argument.
@nopunin10did, I feel like I had a right to be hostile there, and I was still very annoyed about it when JmO commented on my original post (he sent me a list of the rules, and I had never even originally broke any rules on WebD when I got banned, although I will admit that after I got banned I did break the meta gaming rule by using a friends account to post on the forums twice. Thats why I didn't get unbanned and am now here).

Now I would just like to put all of that crap in WebDiplomacy behind me and continue to play this great game on this sight.

I'm not racist. I'm not sexist. And I am not a bigot. Don't just assume that I am because a small number of my friends like to make offensive jokes. Most of my friends are nice, and the rest just like to make jokes. None of them are actually any of these things, and neither am I.

I think that Racism is subjective and really depends on the person, for instance I know many black people who are not bothered by use of the n-word and who encourage jokes that could be construed as racist. I myself being a Jewish man encourage lighthearted humour of an offensive nature about Judaism and I believe people should be allowed to say whatever they want (as long as they don't actually believe the things they're saying) no matter how offensive.

alex, this has nothing to do with webdip, if you look back you'll see you're the only person bringing that up. Nobody here wants to hear about webdip issues. I posted because nobody new on this site feels the need to show up and warn everyone that their friends are going to be "offensive" in press. As a group of new people here you all need to be aware that you've made a concerning entrance, and that announcing an intent to be offensive does not give a pass on the rules.

You'll also note that nobody accused you of being a racist, sexist, or a bigot in this thread. So with that all out of the way lets try this again...
