Looking for a 1600 game
Hello, I’m new here and have been out of pbem Diplomacy for awhile but I would love to get in on the next game of the 1600 variant here. Is there a way I can sign up for a game starting in the future? How does it work around here?

Thanks for any help.

How do points work?
I am confused on points. I know that there is 2 types. The points that allow you to play x amount of games. And the points that show how good of a player you are. How does the whole bet thing work?

Rating question
Hi! New to forums and fairly new to this game, I was wondering how the rating system works. I understand generally that we gain points for draws and solos, and lose them for defeats and survivals, but how is it determined how much we gain or lose?

Lose less points when you replace a player?
Should we really lose as many points when let's say. You replace a player who is in a decent position. Only to upon entering the game automatically start in a terrible position. And then lose 20 points in a game you had 0 chance of surviving in. Should you really lose those 20 points? What If you lost less points when replacing a player to make it less damaging when you start in terrible positions. What you guys think?

The IST province in modern Europe
It appears that there are two IST provinces (Istria and Istanbul). For Istria, that doesn't look like Italy's modern borders, especially as it removes Slovenia's existing coast in today's world.

Improving Fog Of War
Fog of war applies to a few maps, classic, 1998, and such; but it seems like a simple add in. How hard would it be to get FoW as a setting rather than variant property? I would think there are many maps and games I would like to try with it, but it's only on a few things. There are also some variants like Rat Wars, that can only be done in FoW. Just wondering if this was a possibility?

Was the Munich Agreement a British diplomatic coup in 1938?
Neville Chamberlain died on 11/9/1940. Chamberlain's brother had won the Nobel Prize for Locarno, which has explicitly stated that the UK viewed Germany's Eastern border open for revision and was only committed to defending Germany's Western border. Other than getting Hitler's signature on an agreement that he then violate in less than 6 months, I see no other way that Chamberlain could have gotten a treaty with Poland ratified or instituted peace time conscription in a democratic society.

IvG, EvT, Cold War, and Civil War comes to mind.
Mittag (1396 D)

But the rumble in the jungle - AvG - could also be fun!

congrats !
just to chime in, EvT is very England favoured, so i wouldn't recommend it. however, Frankland vs Juggernaut would be more interesting imo
CptMike (1575 D)

If we make Civil War, I just recommand that we limit the number of years. Else it can take weeks to finish a game...
Mittag (1396 D)
09 Oct 19 UTC
I thought EvT is more balanced than Frankland vs Juggerland, but I might be wrong.
Frozen Dog (1515 D)
09 Oct 19 UTC
The statistics on the site indicate that EvT is actually more balanced, not only compared to FvJ, but also FvA!!!! Which is very surprising to me.

I am also surprised, actually, about the big advantage Austria has in the statistics. I genuinely always thought France was stronger.

in EvT, England can get to Tunis and Munich/Berlin easily (St-P is basically free). Turkey either has to sacrifice a build to contest Tunis or make guesses for Tunis/Germany if they don't rush. at best, it's a draw. at worst, Turkey loses.
badivan1 (1661 D)
10 Oct 19 UTC
in FvA, Austria usually rushes (they try to win in 1905); France tries to disrupt Austria. i guess it's easier to rush
badivan1 (1661 D)
10 Oct 19 UTC
Frankland vs Juggernaut statistics is very misleading imo. i don't think ppl piloting Juggernaut were playing optimally. with some experience, it can be relatively balanced.
Mittag (1396 D)
10 Oct 19 UTC
FvA is very balanced - bot most players don"t know how to play France.

I am also not sure about EvT. I agree that E is the easier power to play. But I think if T plays optimally then it might be a 50/50.

Either way - if it ia a tournament then it doesn"t really matter if it is perfectly balanced or not.
mouse (1825 D)

FvA is definitely 'France wins if they can stop Austria from winning'.

Frankland v Juggernaut is pretty much 'Juggernaut wins unless they misplay badly' though. The extra unit is very strong.
Mittag (1396 D)
12 Oct 19 UTC
Yeah, my impression of Frank v Jugg is also that it is unbalanced in Jugg's favor.
CptMike (1575 D)
12 Oct 19 UTC
On my side, I think the most balanced is American Civil War. Nato vs USSR is also balanced but it relies too much on luck in some flip coins.
Mittag (1396 D)
12 Oct 19 UTC
Of the six civil war games I have played, all was won by the confederacy..

Yes, cold war is too little strategy and too much guessing to be really fun. But it does seem to be balanced.
CptMike (1575 D)
13 Oct 19 UTC
Reviewing these, I have lost against you with the Union but I have several times and among these against Badivan and mouse... The fact you can choose your armies the very wide map open the possibilities.
badivan1 (1661 D)

if we were to do a Civil War tourney, i think we need to have all the games to be ongoing concurrently to finish at a reasonable pace

bsiper (1281 D)

Biased but I think Cold War has a strategy coming simply from the idea that you don't want to be in a coin flip situation. Or at least, if you do, you stand to gain from it. There's a lot more luck in terms of guessing when someone is going to fall for a move, but I feel like that's consistent with most diplomacy variants.

Also, the Diplomacy Nexus site had a cold war tournament where it was set up with two sides, where everyone played once as USSR and once as NATO, here's an article on that setup: https://tourneygeek.com/2019/05/19/do-two-singles-make-a-double/
Mittag (1396 D)
18 Oct 19 UTC
Yeah I think cold war is about creating 50/50 guesses where your worst outcome is status quo. Still, that variant always give a lot of 50/50's.

A little bit like IvG. But in IvG you have more like one big complicated situation involving a lot of units. You still have to guess but there is more than two choices. In cold war it's more a lot of 50/50's spread out all over the map.

I think FvA is the 1v1 variant which has the most amount of tactics and the least amount of guessing. I am ignoring Duo of course. Because Duo is not a 1v1 variant. Duo is a sleping pill.
Mittag (1396 D)
18 Oct 19 UTC
One 1v1 variant that I think has some potential is AvT. It's crazy setup, complete chaos. Almost no strategy and a lot of guessing. In the long run Austria alwas wins. So victory conditions has to be set differently. E.g., T wins if game is not decided by 07 or something like that. Not sure what the fair year is. Would anyone be up for a set of test games?
badivan1 (1661 D)
18 Oct 19 UTC
if we are going to suggest unusual 1v1 variants in the classic map, how about France vs Italy?
Mittag (1396 D)
18 Oct 19 UTC
I'd be up for a few test games of that too. Think I played one a while ago. Seems unbalanced in France's favor
CptMike (1575 D)

I wonder if a "fog of war" version of FvA would re-equilibrate the game and also open the doors to new opportunities.
badivan1 (1661 D)
19 Oct 19 UTC
i never tried fog of war on any map, but i can imagine 1v1 rushing strategies taking advantage of it
