Improving Fog Of War
Fog of war applies to a few maps, classic, 1998, and such; but it seems like a simple add in. How hard would it be to get FoW as a setting rather than variant property? I would think there are many maps and games I would like to try with it, but it's only on a few things. There are also some variants like Rat Wars, that can only be done in FoW. Just wondering if this was a possibility?

No one is taking over CDed nations.
No one is taking over civil disordered nations.

No one is taking over civil disordered nations. That may be slight hyperbole, but to my knowledge, there are currently 23 open positions in ongoing games due to people being kicked out of them.

Confession: I once abruptly left the site for personal reasons. This resulted in 4 CDs. When I returned to the site, I had to work to get my reliability rating up from a 78 (I think, this was years ago) back to a 96. I think I was at 97 right before the new changes were implemented. The way that I restored the site's faith in me was this: I joined games that others had left, and I played them. It didn't matter if the position was crumbling; when I took over a position, I played it to the best of my ability.

And open spots in games were hard to come by in those days- there were others, who, having been kicked out of their games, and having their game-joining ability limited because of their sloppiness, wanted to join more games. The only mechanism by which they could increase their game cap was to take over for players who had NMRed.

With the new reliability rating, there is no incentive to take over a crumbling position. Before the change, I think the most open spots that there ever were was six. Now there are twenty-three. I do not foresee that number getting better.

A similar system is in Webdip for reliability. However, since there is a cost to take over a CD, and they are often not in a great position, it feels like I'm just sinking points. Now that there's stricter punishments for reliability, maybe it would be a good idea to remove that.
I don't fully know, maybe the mods know some statistic that shows why this is a bad idea.

I usually only pick up CDs that have good positions because the end result will affect my rating and and any NMR with will result in a CD.
I think this latter point is the worse of the two, as it puts you at risk of drastically decreasing your reliability rating and that probably disincentives a lot of people.

That's it, WJM. Bringing rating oriented players to take over ''bad''positions is so simple! And usually these players are fierce, especially if any result they get is counted positively. Simple solution: the rating of the replacing player is not affected negatively, but, if he gets any points, then only the positive points count. Also, the negative result is always counted for the replaced power. Furthermore, the points should be divided pro rata, i.e. the guy who played the winning power until 1910 gets 2/3 of the points and the guy who took it over from 1910 to 1915 gets one third. This example is not exact you just got what I mean.

The current method for handling the player that left (even defeated players count as having defeated them) works fine, no need to fudge things by giving them partial credit if their replacement goes on to do well.

Agree with WiJaMa, I love picking up CDs in decent positions and would happily take over and play out poorer positions if I wouldn't lose rating, as CCR suggests.

It's a pity the community doesn't seem interested in this subject.
Having abandoned positions filled, and filled with quality, should be an important matter for the site.

Last time I brought this up, I had to accept the argument that "after all, we don't have a CD problem in this site, as you can check in the 'open positions' section." I was silenced after this argument, but it seems it's not valid any more. It was a weak argument, as it's proven side the situation remains the same since Mr. Fink brought it to our attention. And it is related to other singularities related to the nmr policy, discussed in recent threads in the forum.

I agree with this as an issue. It's just so hard to justify taking over positions. :(

I have taken over a bunch of CDs. Only the ones that were overwhelmingly good positions though.

Full agreement that the CD situation is a problem with the current state of the NMR system. Unfortunately we currently have nobody available to address this issue in near future. But I still have plans to overwork the whole system for vdip at some point within the next months. All that is said here will be taken into account.

And the benefits of taking over CDs, especially those with bad positions, should be made very clear in the Open Positions area.

On a related note, when someone NMRs, maybe everyone's choices and diplomacy is frozen and the player coming in (hopefully incentivized as discussed above) has to enter moves immediately?

Might speed things up a bit. Just a thought. Might be some problems with it I have missed.

@tobi1 - Here's one detail to take into account. Currently, when a player takes over a country in CD, they get zero delays, because that's what the previous player had when put into CD. I think it would be much better to give them the same number of delays that players get when the game first starts.
Macca573 (1517 D)
19 Nov 19 UTC
But that could cause infinite delays, if the new player is inactive. I've seen it before, 3 Italys all CD'd
BobMcBob (1281 D)
19 Nov 19 UTC
(+1)
That's nothing! I was once in a game where 8 Italies CD'd, 6 were in the space of three years. If we'd given them all the delays back the game would've taken at least a week longer to complete. I think the idea that has already been proposed of being able to earn back excused missed turns is good though.
Pope (818 D)

Another possibility is having a few "vacuum players" that will suck up all of the badly positioned nations and take a hit for the rest of us. Personally, I don't care that much about my rating + I'd like to improve, so I've been taking a lot of these nations with no hope to see if I can turn anything around.
Hopefully some other people feel the same way so we can get these games going!
Synarus (1061 D)
20 Nov 19 UTC
I am not a very reliable player, life gets in the way. BUT I liked being able to work off my unreliability by picking up other CD's. I tried to do this after the new system, picked up 4 or so CD's. I missed one or two phases because of unexpected work and got booted off the site for 5 days.

So I'm not going to be picking up any more CD's

Was the Munich Agreement a British diplomatic coup in 1938?
Neville Chamberlain died on 11/9/1940. Chamberlain's brother had won the Nobel Prize for Locarno, which has explicitly stated that the UK viewed Germany's Eastern border open for revision and was only committed to defending Germany's Western border. Other than getting Hitler's signature on an agreement that he then violate in less than 6 months, I see no other way that Chamberlain could have gotten a treaty with Poland ratified or instituted peace time conscription in a democratic society.

Anyone want to take this world game?
I'm playing in World Peace Simulator-2, gameID=39267 , but I'm about to go away and am unsure if I'll be able to input my moves. If you are interested, PM me and I'll tell you what country I'm playing. I don't want to just say it here as the game is anonymous. Then I can use the country switch tool to give it away. Please take a look if you are interested.
Thanks!
