Maps with a bid for centers system.
Hey everyone.
I really like the added randomness that the Greek diplomacy map as with its bidding to your home centers.
Is there any other maps that have something like this?
Cheers

Convoys with +2 strength variant?
Would a Classic variant with this change (i.e. armies convoyed to a place bringing an attack power of 2 units) be interesting? A convoy involving more than one ship wouldn't have the attack power stack, by the way. If a variant already exists with this property, what is it?

Here, as a reply, I will post a link to the new game for people who want to join it new, and for those specific people who were in the original before time expired

If you are in the next game and time runs out and not enough people joined, then I will make yet another one, and just return here to continue joining it if the pre-game time ever runs out again

Will the game go to X-way draw if X players vote draw and all other players vote concede, where X is a positive integer greater than 1?

No, the game will not be drawn (unless X is equal to the number of surviving players).
edfh (1635 D)

DPJudge has a setting called noDIAS. It allows draws not to include all survivors. It would be great if there was a setting for concede to be allowed to work that way. It already allows a single winner by virtue of all others conceding. It could be similar. If all players not conceding vote draw, enable the draw. This would be good for two reasons: 1) Save time when elimination of the remaining conceding player(s) is certain. 2) Encourages people to take over small abandoned positions because perhaps they can at least play to survive though not part of the draw. Of course, it would have to be apparent somewhere that a player was set to concede so that the final member of the draw to pick draw knows and they don't inadvertently let the smaller player sneak into the draw. Unless of course the last player to pick draw really wanted to include the smaller player and they conspire to click draw around the same time to make it happen.... yet more opportunity for Diplomacy intrigue.
Mercy (2131 D)

It would be a bad feature. On PlayDiplomacy, you can concede to a draw. As a result, solos are rarer and two-way draws are more common. When two players are steamrolling the board, frequently the rest of the surviving players will concede to them. In reality, if these games would play out, either or both the two big players will come very close to a solo, which makes the game more interesting and gives opportunities to the other survivors, too. If you want to win the game, this feature can be very bad for you, since you have to claim you want to draw with your allies; so if this is possible prematurely, you lose your opportunities.
drano019 (2710 D Mod)

Agreed with Mercy. It reduces chances for intrigue greatly.

In Mercy's example, a two power steamrolling suddenly falls apart if one power refuses to end the game when everyone has conceded to their draw. And this might happen as soon as that team both has something like 12 scs each, well before the game is over. As it stands now, they can play along until they have a chance to strike for a solo.

I fear all this feature would encourage is ending games prematurely and we would see a flood of larger draws in uninteresting games.

Why not have it as an option? The „market“ of players will decide if they want to use it or not.

What you might call ending a game prematurely might be called letting the game drag on by others.

Simple answer: Oli has been away from the site for a long time, and any change like this would require his admin access. In addition to that, development work would be needed to change the code on the site, and that's all volunteer work that we are short staffed on at this time.

So it's simply not feasible right now.

Also new players might get dragged into such a inherently bad feature without knowing better, same applies to PPSC.

Inherently bad? I don’t think you understand the meaning of that word. If we want to talk about something that’s inherently bad it’s having a site admin who wants nothing to do with the site they admin. :D:D:D. I don’t know how often I’ve read „Oli has the access but he has been away a long time...“ Why doesn’t he just give the codes to someone if he wants nothing to do with the site?

If talking bad about Oli is the game, that shit ain't happening.

Oli for YEARS ran vDip (and OliDip before it) out of the goodness of his heart. No money, all volunteer hours. There is now a Mod team that helps keep things going smooth here, but we have certain limitations. We are also all volunteers.

Smack talking a volunteer admin who's run a free site for well over a decade so we can all enjoy this great game just because it doesn't implement some unnecessary features is just ridiculous. Let's check our privilege here eh? We've got a GREAT site with a great game with tons of great variants. Let's just enjoy it and quit complaining about little unnecessary things yeah?
think its fair to question why admin access isnt available for the site. I guess its not as easy as emailing a password? If there's something personal or sensitive going on, then I apologize. I didnt think youd get so riled up. Also, I never implied that someone should do volunteer work against their better judgement. Anyway, Im just a random internet stranger, dont take me so seriously.
drano019 (2710 D Mod)
31 Jan 22 UTC
It's certainly fair to question. Comments like:

"Why doesn’t he just give the codes to someone if he wants nothing to do with the site?"

have implications beyond questioning. A questioning comment would be "is there any way someone else might be able to get admin access to the site?" instead of throwing shade on a guy who's given us a free product for a very long time out of the goodness of his heart.
I dont see it as shade. Why is it a bad thing if he doesnt want anything to do with the site? Like you said, its free - I get it. You could stop modding tomorrow and I wouldnt begrduge you for it. Sure, you could say Im sticking my nose where it doesnt belong, but is it really necessary to walk on eggshells when phrasing a question- sheesh.
drano019 (2710 D Mod)
31 Jan 22 UTC
It's shade because you're basically saying the guy who spent 10+ years giving us all this wonderful site doesn't care about it and the implication is that not caring = bad. Plus, throwing that type of comment around without bothering to ask if there's something else going on first just comes off as throwing shade.

It's akin to someone assuming their significant other is cheating on them when they don't reply to a message instead of asking what's going on first. It's like, jump to conclusions much?

Anyways, I've said my piece about this. Long story short: Development is severely hindered at this time, and there's no timetable for that changing. If people have things they'd like considered, it'll have to wait unfortunately.
Wait is this a big inside joke or something? I feel like it’s one of those hidden camera shows :D:D:D

Just shoot me a message if you want to fix some bugs. :)

The phrase „having a site admin who wants nothing to do with the site they admin“ is not doing justice to Oli‘s role and work. You might have noticed it. But I see how that impression might occur nowadays.

The feature initially discussed here is controversial. And totally depends on the polarizing view on the target of a Diplomacy game.
There are technical implications. Too many options make it harder to maintain the code. Open questions regarding detailed functionality and design.
Unforeseen impacts on players‘ game mentality as discussed earlier.
Nobody available to take responsibility for the changes, evaluate and adjust. Nobody willing to code such feature.

If we find someone who willing and able to build this and take responsibility for the changes in the sense that we end up with a finished and polished work, we can probably start discussing in depth whether we as community would want this and it would be worth implementing. Otherwise it is most probably waisted time for the reasons of a free and voluntarily run application.

"I dont see it as shade. Why is it a bad thing if he doesnt want anything to do with the site?"

Hm... how could anyone possibly misconstrue your words as shade?

I think what you're not quite grasping is that Oli is not just an admin. He built the site (though I know others were involved), for free, and owns it. It's his site.

It's like he built a house and then moved out of the country for a year, but is letting us all stay in it while he's gone. And you're over here asking why he doesn't just give us the deed to the house if he doesn't care about it. It's not hard to see why people who knew him personally would see this as disrespectful.

A comment on common courtesy
Stuff happens in life and people occasionally need help from Mods to exit games without destroying the games for other players. Players who need Mods to remove them and delay games should provide a list of all of their games to the Mods. This is common courtesy.
