FAQ Contacting Moderators
Is the FAQ up to date? Im not sure what this is talking about. Did you just copy and paste this from webdip? One answer talks about the forum as if it’s been switched to a category format, which I know happened at webdip years ago clearly not here unless you switched back.

“You can contact the moderators at any time by using the 'Need help?' button located just below the order entry…”

Diplomacy Variant Creation
So I've been in the process of making a Diplomacy Variant. I plan to take the "Europa Renovatio" map and update and expand it. (What I mean to say is, because it's a translation of the EU4 map, it's gone out of date since then.)

How do you achieve a 3-way draw in a game with 85 SC and a solo threshold of 26? This has happened twice in the "Vikings" variant, according to the stats page. https://www.vdiplomacy.net/variants.php?variantID=63

Activating Flowery War
Flowery War seems to be set up as map 150, but not able to be played, while the variant next numbered, Europa Renovatio, is playable. Why is that?

Should we most properly view Oli as an avatar of the Aztec sun god Huitzilopochtli, the god of night, sorcery and destiny Tezcatlipoca, the fire god Xiuhtecuhtli, the god of rain and agricultural fertility Tlaloc or the god of rebirth and the seasons Xipe Totec?

We need to know the proper protocol for the ritualistic sacrifice specified by the appropriate deity to prevent the collapse of the universe. To appease the rain god, for example, Mitomon would need to qualify as a child, be willingly surrendered by his mother and be able to cry so that the earth can be optimally nourished by the tears of a child before he is burned at the stake.

But how, Orange? The rituals are quite involved and distinct. Are we maximizing the tears of a child before immolation to honor Tlaloc? Are we to flay off his skin with an obsidian blade while needing to keep him alive so that the appointed priest can perform the prescribed dance wearing the bloody skin to glorify Xipe Totec before cutting through his diaphragm to pull out his heart? Great dexterity in highly specialized skills are required to properly perform each of these sacred rituals. In the end Mitomon's sacrifice will not grant us Oli's powers but merely appease the gods so that they will act to prevent the universe from imploding.

BTW, many years ago, I got to go on a really in depth private tour of the third most visited natural history museum in the US for fundraisers with department by department curators leading. When we were going through the section focused on Mesoamerican culture, an older white couple (very NPR tot bag type urban lefties) asserted that Aztec human sacrifice was an exaggerated myth promoted by the Spanish to justify their colonial exploitation of Mexico. A woman who had silently joined the department tour guide introduced herself as a visiting curator from the main natural history museum in Mexico City, and delivered one of the most impressive bitch slaps I have ever witnessed in person in my life. She began by saying that the veterans of the 700 year Reconquista were not at all burdened by any need to self-rationalize or justify violence and conquest of non-Christians and then explained how the original Spanish sources actually toned down their accounts of Aztec religious rituals because they literally did not know how to even describe them to people who had not witnessed them. She then delivered an almost ten minute monologue describing in extreme detail the rituals associated with Xipe Totec, including the choreographed dances while draped in the sacrifice's freshly flayed skin while he was still alive, which were basically a footnote in the original Spanish account. Those mainly focused on the high volume simpler rituals of conveyor belt heart removal, kicking the bodies down the temple steps and the mass partaking in cannibalism.

I think if we just do a bit of every ritual it should average out to work somehow, pretty sure that's how rituals work

Ahhh gopher I love it. A cursory glance at relatively any pre-colombian codex exemplifies the terrific importance of sacrifice!! Borgia is currently my rotating desktop background, ha! And say what you will about Bernal but to me that right there is a man trying desperately to purvey the level and quantity of sacrifice to a western christian audience. Let me grab my copy real quick, one passage always stood out to me on the subject, this is as they're nearing Tlaxcala, "I remember that in the square where some of the cues (temples) stood were many piles of human skulls, so neatly arranged that we could count them, and I reckoned them at more than a hundred thousand. I repeat that there were more than a hundred thousand." The fact he feels he needs to repeat himself I just found so striking, he himself seems almost in disbelief. Innumerable quotes to choose from there tho. If anyone hasn't read the Conquest of New Spain I can't suggest it enough, one of the most fascinating books I've ever encountered.

@David, my man. Flowery War is on limbo because... of you! :O :O :O

Haha, I am only half-joking. Here's what I wrote you a couple years back:

>Looks like he [@tobi1] ran into some issues with implementing the transform rule for Flowery War. It seems that making the transform rule is possible, since the current code dictates that 1) it must happen in the Movement phase rather than Build phase and 2) it must be restricted to Supply Centers rather than any coastal province.

>If you allow the rules to be amended for vDip's implementation, the variant is also ready. Otherwise Tobias said it would require "more effort" and he doesn't know when/if he will be able to make that effort. In any case it's your call.

You then said it "would significantly change Flowery War" and proposed you would "think about it". But you never said anything more. :O :O :O

Incidentally I did recently contact @tobi1 about getting variant development back up...

@Oli is encased in marble. He will return when vDip is to be delivered from ultimate evil, and not a day before.

@Orange Yes, the last round of added variants in 2023 were done with his help.

@Jean Oli didn't disappear very mysteriously, he's just busy. As far as I know he is still the one single-handedly paying the server costs and keeping the lights on.

"@Jean Oli didn't disappear very mysteriously, he's just busy. As far as I know he is still the one single-handedly paying the server costs and keeping the lights on."

So the great and mighty Oli sacrifices of himself to sustain our Universe and prevent it from collapsing.

From Wikipedia:

Sacrifice was a common theme in the Aztec culture. In the legend of the "Five Suns", all the gods sacrificed themselves so that mankind could live. Some years after the Spanish conquest of the Aztec Empire, a body of the Franciscans confronted the remaining Aztec priesthood and demanded, under threat of death, that they desist from this traditional practice. The Aztec priests justified their acts as follows: "Life is because of the gods; with their sacrifice, they gave us life...They produce our sustenance...which nourishes life."

What the Aztec priests were referring to was a cardinal Mesoamerican belief: that a great and continuing sacrifice by the gods sustains the Universe. A strong sense of indebtedness was connected with this worldview. Indeed, nextlahualli (debt-payment) was a commonly used metaphor for human sacrifice, and, as Bernardino de Sahagún reported, it was said that the victim was someone who "gave his service".

Human sacrifice was in this sense the highest level of an entire panoply of offerings through which the Aztecs sought to repay their debt to the gods. Both Sahagún and Toribio de Benavente (also called "Motolinía") observed that the Aztecs gladly parted with everything. Even the "stage" for human sacrifice, the massive temple-pyramids, was an offering mound: crammed with the land's finest art, treasure and victims; they were then buried underneath for the deities.

Additionally, the sacrifice of animals was a common practice, for which the Aztecs bred dogs, eagles, jaguars and deer. The cult of Quetzalcoatl required the sacrifice of butterflies and hummingbirds.

Limited forms of self-sacrifice were also quite common: people would offer maguey thorns, tainted with their own blood, using blood from their tongues, ear lobes, or genitals. Blood held a central place in Mesoamerican cultures. The 16th-century Florentine Codex by Franciscan friar Bernardino de Sahagún reports that in one of the creation myths, Quetzalcóatl offered blood extracted from a wound in his own penis to give life to humanity. There are several other myths in which Nahua gods offer their blood to help humanity.

...

A great deal of cosmological thought seems to have underlain each of the Aztec sacrificial rites. Most of the sacrificial rituals took more than two people to perform. In the usual procedure of the ritual, the victim would be taken to the top of the temple. The victim would then be laid on a stone slab, a chacmool, by four priests, and their abdomen would be sliced open by a fifth priest with a ceremonial knife made of flint. The most common form of human sacrifice was heart-extraction. The Aztec believed that the heart (tona) was both the seat of the individual and a fragment of the Sun's heat (istli). The chacmool was a very important religious tool used during sacrifices. The cut was made in the abdomen and went through the diaphragm. The priest would rip out the heart and it would then be placed in a bowl held by a statue of the honored god, and the body would then be thrown down the temple's stairs. The body would land on a terrace at the base of the pyramid called an apetlatl.

Before and during the killing, priests and audience gathered in the plaza below, stabbed, pierced and bled themselves as auto-sacrifice. Hymns, whistles, spectacular costumed dances and percussive music marked different phases of the rite.

The body parts would then be disposed of, the viscera fed to the animals in the zoo, and the bleeding head was placed on display in the tzompantli or the skull rack. When the consumption of individuals was involved, the warrior who captured the enemy was given the meaty limbs while the most important flesh, the stomach and chest, were offerings to the gods.

The Treaty of Verdun
I've heard that it is incredibly hard to make a good map for around three players for instance, the 1066 makes the Norwegians so powerful but somehow the 843: Treaty of Verdun seems like it is almost perfectly balanced. How is this possible? Looking at the map it is quite hard to see symmetry but yet it still works. What makes the Treaty of Verdun different?
