Sengoku Nagashino Feedback Thread
Hi Sengoku Nagashino players - please deposit your thoughts here for designer digestion as the first round of games resolves.

Please do not directly comment on the situation/players etc. of any active games. Please limit your comments to the variant design itself, as it appears at gamestart. Once a game has completed, it is fair game for analysis, but not before please.

Deep philosophical question about American culture
So I teach at a major public research university. And I keep noticing that my male students in their early 20s seem with a surprisingly high probability to be intimately familiar with the movie Don't Be a Menace to South Central While Drinking Your Juice in the Hood. This movie came out when I was in high school. And at the same time, they seem ignorant of In Living Color which is readily available on Youtube. So why DBAMTSCWDYJITH and not, for example, I'm Gonna Git You Sucka?

Game set up - NMR
I want to set a game so that it never processes a turn with out orders. I think that is setting “Turn” = 0.
But if I set “Delay”= 2 does that mean a two day/phase pause before that player is kicked? Or is he kicked immediately and there are 2 days for a replacement to appear. In the latter case what happens after the 2 days?

obsolete Sengoku variant
Hi all, designer of Sengoku here. I would love to get the latest version of Sengoku in use on this system, as it is much more balanced. Found here: http://dipwiki.com/index.php?title=Sengoku
Even if the DP system, can't be used, the version at http://nairenvorbeck.angelfire.com/ is still better than the one in use currently. Poor Mori needs a fair chance :-) Anyone willing/able to help me get these implemented?

1 v 1 games on variant maps
I am not a coder (sic) so I was wondering how hard is/was it to code 1 v 1 games? Is it reasonable to think that variant maps (Modern, Ancient Med, etc) could be set up to create 1 v 1 games? The idea of having a larger group of countries to play against each other is intriguing. I just don't know if it possible, or doable.

How old school are you?
I am not very tech savvy so forgive me. I think I started dip on some RSS pages using Netscape at work in maybe 1996(?) does that make sense? All email based through Judges. What were they called? USDJ or something. I remember FROG but they all spoke French. Haha. I used to stand outside my office in the snow smoking a cig with a hand drawn map with about 100 crossing out for each phase using coloured pens. Ah web based interactive maps?!?! Luxury!!!

Napoleonic Variant, and the lack of neutral centers
I had the honor to play 'Napoleonic' back in the lab (an awful game as Spain by the way). I had a question back then which I ask here and now:

Why there are no neutral supply centers?
Enriador (1491 D (B))

I ask from a design perspective. Besides perfectly symmetrical variants like Pure, I never saw it before. Without a full year of neutral grabbing to see how everyone moves, powers have to go at each other's necks from the get go. Lack of centers around the borders also make the early-mid game incredibly stagnant.

Given the sheer number of non-center provinces and low number of centers (proportional to number of powers) I wonder if an extra season of movement - Summer - wouldn't bring some extra fluidity to it.

The idea was to make this more about the diplomacy side of the game: forcing players to talk, scheme and stab right from the start of the game. I figured it was something fresh that hadn't been done before. If it proves to be a total failure I'm open to ideas but give it a chance first :)
Enriador (1491 D (B))

It's actually a great idea @Firehawk. Curious on how it'll pan out over many games!

Another question: we talked (in the test game) about changing the start date from 1800 to 1805 - which is slightly more historically accurate.

Why did Calhamer chose the starting year for 1901, even being it a World War I game?
Almost all players forget - or never knew - that diplomacy is not a war game. I explain: it is a game that simulates the political shifts before the war, not a game that simulates the actual war.

"Almost all players forget - or never knew - that diplomacy is not a war game. "

It might be all those armies and fleets conquering each other's cities that makes people think that.... The game simulates war. It's just meant to do so at an extremely simplistic scale. Not everyone plays like Chamberlain.
CCR (1672 D)
09 Oct 17 UTC
"Diplomacy is a game of negociations, alliances, promises kept and promises broken."
The game does not simulate the war itself in a simple way: it simulates the politics that make a war in a complex way.
This is why Calhamer chose the date of 1901, not only because it ends in "01" for "turn one". This is the same why Napoleonic can start in 1801. ;)

@CCR

What's the source for your claim that Calhamer did it to simulate the early 20th century politics as a whole?

I believe he chose 1901 because it's way easier to count turns that way. But whatever the reason, the point here is about *historical accuracy*. 1901 fails at simulating fin-de-siecle politics a little since it is a 1913 map, but ok because, well, Classic is Classic.

But Napoleonic is an entirely different beast given that the author is right here among us, full holder of his creation's IP. You can still attempt to simulate the feeling of an era without railroading the experience to fit a specific war, AND have it start at a start date more in line with the geopolitical borders of the time.

If the WWI "variant" can begin in 1901, then why not a Napoleonic in 1801?? :-p

I always had it in my mind, from the very first rules of diplomacy I've ever read, page one: "The participants reproduce and modify the situations that preceded the First World War." Maybe i'm all wrong, for now I recognize this was not an avalon hill official (and this is my literal translation). I was very comfortable with this until today... now I'm pretty disappointed :^). I keep a copy of said rules, from my 1973 brazilian green box, which was sent to Simon Szykman's collection twenty years ago.

Hey. Nice looking map. Testing how a game works without neutrals is an interesting idea, and I will be interested to hear what the experience is like.

I'd like to nitpick a bit though and point out that every province on the board has its name in English except for the Swedish provinces that have Swedish names. Appropiate English names would be Scania instead of Skåne and Lapland instead of Lappland. Dalarna often goes as Dalecarlia in English, and would certainly have been the name used in 1800. Since Helsinki goes as Helsingfors, which would probably have the English name at the time, I assume it's the name at the time that matters.

Now, as for a more important topic. What I see as the design challenge here is that removing neutrals makes few people have adjacent centres. Stabs must be able to pay of when you do them, and adjacent centres makes this possible. In standard the Turk will have an army in Bulgaria almost always without it being strange, and it can strike at both Russia, Austria and sometimes Italy without delay from there. When centres are not adjacent it's like every power has a France-Italy relation, where a surprise stab is not possible and defeating someone is only doable by brute force alone. Then why stab at all?

Also, Diplomacy is clearly a 1914 game, it just counts from 1901 to make counting easy. A 1805 game, or whatever year, can certainly use 1801 as the start year for counting.

P.S. The province of Novgorod does not actually include the city of Novgorod. An optional name could be Yaroslav.

YaroslavL perhaps? But Novgorod is more solid
Firehawk (1225 D (B))

On the Swedish provinces, that actually was changed in the latest version on the lab. I don't know why this has reverted to the previous version.
G-Man (2290 D)

Crowded is a variant on Classic (available here on vDip) that eliminates the neutrals by creating four additional powers. It completely forces the issue of gameplanning and alliances from the get-go and has fantastic playability. So, it's nice to see a variant like Napoleonic pick up with this by making this a design feature. I look forward to playing this.
peterlund (1080 D)

So what? I do not see why it should not be "Skåne", "Lappland" and "Dalarna" as these are the original names for those provinces.
mouse (1874 D)

I think the point is consistency - if we're using Swedish rather than general English reference for Skåne, why are we not also using, say, Москва́ and İstanbul?
Flame (1058 D (B))
12 Oct 17 UTC
Let's use Latin or Esperantto.... Don't worry Oli will be back provinces will be named correctly as in last revision
peterlund (1080 D)

I think it would be great to have "Москва́" on the map an since the interface does NOT REQUIRE TYPING, there is no real functional reason to Anglify everything.

Its not unlike the crowded variant but with a shift of the new countries and some tweaking to balance things. I'm pretty excited to play one.
@Firehawk sorry for the off-topic.. I saw a small bug in the map, I hope I'm not saying something already said many times.
