As discussed in episode 23 of the Diplomacy Games podcast I'm thinking of putting together a 1066 tournament. Interested takers?

Playtest of variant
Hi! I am trying to organize a playtest of a variant I created with some unique rules that made it not possible to implement on vdiplomacy (yet!). I have called it 'Feudal Diplomacy'. [See below for details!]

I thought I'd create a few games of the newest variants, and looked for those still not played, without opened games, or no new ones yet.

Clock Watching - Sniping the NMRs
I am unaware of the actual term, but is it considered bad form here on vDip to change your orders in anticipation of an opponent's upcoming NMR?
Caerus (1470 D)
04 Jun 18 UTC
I am aware there is another active thread discussing the CDs and their various consequences. I have no desire to recover that ground.

My question is: At 5 minutes until the deadline, you notice an opponent hasn't placed an order yet. If you change your orders to account for their supposed inactivity, is that exploiting a side effect of our medium, or simply a good tactical use of information?
Skyrock (1149 D)
04 Jun 18 UTC
It is perfectly legal to change your orders around until closing time and take advantage of another power likely failing to submit orders.

It is actually extremely mild compared to some dirty tricks Richard Sharp suggested: http://www.diplomacy-archive.com/resources/god/twelve.htm

In my opinion that's their fault not mine. The game made it so stuff like that could happen. Similarly, those countries that are more prepared for war in real life typically do better so, there's that.
G-Man (2466 D)
04 Jun 18 UTC
I see the results of clock-watching regularly, so you might as well take advantage of it, as you're no doubt already experiencing the disadvantage of it when others do it.
tantrumizer (1557 D)
04 Jun 18 UTC
They have shut off the possibility of doing this on WebDiplomacy recently. I think that is probably for the better, but I have certainly "sniped" NMRs here (and there) before.
drano019 (2710 D Mod)
04 Jun 18 UTC
@tantrumizer - How did they shut it off? Did they make some change as to how late you can change your orders?
tantrumizer (1557 D)
05 Jun 18 UTC
No, they no longer show who has or has not submitted their orders (for anon games).
Sky_Hopper (365 D)
05 Jun 18 UTC
@Sky: Wow. I'm glad that doesn't happen on vDip.
See, that change sucks. I blacklist morons who refuse to submit orders but keep showing up so they don't CD. That change would limit my ability to recognize those a-hole and do that.
tantrumizer (1557 D)
05 Jun 18 UTC
I don't like it, because I can't tell if I am the last player to submit orders, in which case I hurry in and do them to keep the game moving. But in terms of the goals of the change (stopping sniping, preserving anonymity), I'm OK with it.
ScubaSteve (1234 D)

It wouldn’t even occur to me not to do so. I’m not (generally) sitting around waiting for the turn to progress... but I have occasionally. I haven’t even thought of it as potentially unsportsmanlike. What I consider unsportsmanlike is failing to enter moves.
Caerus (1470 D)
05 Jun 18 UTC
@tantrumizer - Without outright saying it, you seem to be the only person so far that takes issue with NMR sniping. Would you care to elaborate (or correct me if I misread)?
d-ice (1969 D)
05 Jun 18 UTC
If you're worried about "unsportsmanlike sniping", set a trap by not submitting any orders until 5 seconds before deadline.
Rancher (1247 D)
05 Jun 18 UTC
oh, I've seen players do that ...
ubercacher16 (2169 D)
05 Jun 18 UTC
@d-ice. That seems to me like it is more unsportsmanlike then the sniping itself.
Spartan22 (1883 D (B))
05 Jun 18 UTC

If you're claiming it's entirely fair to utilize the knowledge available to "snipe" potential NMRs, there is absolutely nothing wrong with submitting your orders 5 seconds before the deadline. That's the point of a deadline; anytime up until it is fair game for submitting our orders.
drano019 (2710 D Mod)
05 Jun 18 UTC

Maybe I'm a little "old school" in my mentality, but I'm of the mindset that anything (barring cheating) is fair game in Diplomacy. Want to snipe an NMR? Fair game, it's part of the platform we have here. Want to wait until 10 seconds before deadline to enter your orders to try to trap people sniping orders? Totally valid. These are simply online versions of tricks people used to do in postal dip like forging letters, impersonating people, sending letters on "accident" to the wrong person, etc.

As for how it'd be more unsportsmanlike to trap people by waiting to enter orders than it would be to snipe an NMR, I don't get that. If someone is taking advantage of the online platform to see you haven't entered orders, you can use that knowledge to your benefit to trick them. It's simply another version of telling someone you're doing one thing and then doing a different one. You're essentially "lying" about missing the turn by waiting.
Sky_Hopper (365 D)
05 Jun 18 UTC
To alleviate this problem, we can technically add an option to hide who has or has not entered their orders. (Public order status/Hidden order status)
Caerus (1470 D)
05 Jun 18 UTC
@Sky_Hopper:
But my question was "Is this a problem?" and so far, the general consensus is no.
Spartan22 (1883 D (B))
05 Jun 18 UTC
As far as I've noticed, I haven't seen much of an issue with it. At least not overwhelming to the point where the experience is being compromised.
drano019 (2710 D Mod)
05 Jun 18 UTC
(+2)
To piggyback on Spartan's message, NMR "sniping" is only possible because people NMR. The root problem is NMRs, not the "sniping". If people entered orders, there wouldn't even be a need to discuss sniping, since it wouldn't happen. Making changes to how the website works to disallow sniping is treating a symptom instead of the underlying problem.

And yes, I realize we're always going to have NMRs, but surely it's a worthy goal to minimize them?
ScubaSteve (1234 D)
05 Jun 18 UTC

To piggyback on Drano, it would make the negative effects of NMRing less pronounced and would encourage more of it.
tantrumizer (1557 D)
05 Jun 18 UTC
@Caerus, I'm not taking issue with it. I think it's fine and do it myself. I was talking about the changes WebDiplomacy had made (that happen to stop NMR sniping), of which one aspect is not ideal for me (seeing if I am the last player to submit orders).
Sky_Hopper (365 D)

How about a mandatory bet restriction for lower RR ratings?
Games are already restrictive to a minimum RR. It isn't solving the problem because high RR games with large nation counts are hard to fill.
Skyrock (1149 D)
06 Jun 18 UTC
Large nation games are very prone to NMRs and CD anyway. It is the nature of that format that above 7 players someone is bound to be a deadbeat statistically.
Really? Have you run the stats? How about if the game is restricted by RR? Oh wait, as these never seem to get going you have too small a sample to run a six Sigma against.
Skyrock (1149 D)
06 Jun 18 UTC
No stats, only bitter anecdotal experience. Big minimum reliability variants don't ever start, big free-for-all variants always have some deadbeat(s) dropping out and tearing the game balance apart in favour of their lucky and opportunistic neighbours.
My point exactly. Keeping deadbeats out (a good thing) leads to large map games never starting (a bad thing)
Caerus (1470 D)
06 Jun 18 UTC
@Tantrumizer
Ahh. Thanks for the clarification
drano019 (2710 D Mod)
06 Jun 18 UTC
@YCHTT -

That is indeed the ever-present dilemma. The fact is, there aren't enough people here who are dedicated and want to play the big maps to fill them up with reliable people. So we end up with the deadbeats. That gives two options:

1) Continue to play with the deadbeats, with predictable results.
2) Accept that some maps won't get played if we want to fix the deadbeat issue.

Personally, I'm all for option 2. I'd rather have a good game and accept that some maps won't get played, than play a game knowing that at some point, someone's going to ruin it with NMRs and CDs.

I know it's getting off topic from the original discussion, but this is the root issue of sniping. Either we attempt to root out the deadbeats and self-censor the maps we can play somewhat, or we accept the status quo.

ScubaSteve (1234 D)

If more people knew how awesome diplomacy was, then we wouldn't have the dilemma of choosing between big games that never start and big games that start with unreliable players.

I agree! It's only the unmotivated that NMR. It's so easy to write in ANYTHING for a set of moves. I may change my moves six times before the clock runs out. But I will always get in Somethin almost right away, just in case I get distracted and miss the deadline. This is a habit newbies should aspire to

As mentioned in another thread, I've been working on the code and assets necessary to port Baron M. Powell's variant 1900 to vDip and/or webDip.

In order to keep myself accountable in some fashion to actually complete this task, and not just talk about it, I've created a small project plan where I can mark my progress.

Taking over Civil Disorders should be free of charge
Reasoning: the player who takes over a Civil Disorder is not just putting themself in a precarious position (as they must evaluate everybody's styles and strategies) but they are also saving the game's balance and fun.

In order to reward/incentive people to take more CDs, I believe that making it free of charge (rather than current 50% discount) would be for the best. Thoughts?

Cold War Tournament
I am looking to start a rated Cold War tournament consisting of group and knockout stages. Groups of 4 will face each other twice, once as each country. The top two (or three, pending interest) from each group will move on to the knockout stage, with each matchup lasting two games. Users will play as each country once. If tied 1-1, an additional two games are played until a winner is determined.

Feature Request: Friends List
Similar to how the site already has functionality for muting and blocking other players, we should be able to add them to a friends list so that tracking them down to send PMs is more convenient. It would also make hosting games with players you know you enjoy playing with much easier. I don’t believe that this feature is currently in the issue tracker, and it seems like it would be very easy to implement given the current muting and blocking features already in place.
