Improving Fog Of War
Fog of war applies to a few maps, classic, 1998, and such; but it seems like a simple add in. How hard would it be to get FoW as a setting rather than variant property? I would think there are many maps and games I would like to try with it, but it's only on a few things. There are also some variants like Rat Wars, that can only be done in FoW. Just wondering if this was a possibility?

Was the Munich Agreement a British diplomatic coup in 1938?
Neville Chamberlain died on 11/9/1940. Chamberlain's brother had won the Nobel Prize for Locarno, which has explicitly stated that the UK viewed Germany's Eastern border open for revision and was only committed to defending Germany's Western border. Other than getting Hitler's signature on an agreement that he then violate in less than 6 months, I see no other way that Chamberlain could have gotten a treaty with Poland ratified or instituted peace time conscription in a democratic society.

Suggestions for Europa Renovatio to be improved
Firstly, I'd like to congrat and thank Technostar on making an amazing variant. I've just got a few suggestions for improvement:

1. Genoa and Venice remain weak. While I think there were steps made to strengthen them, the steps were clearly not enough. Perhaps they could get an additional home SC at each colony?
2. North Africa, in every game with press, and even in some without, remain consistently strong because they are much more likely and more effective than any other group of country at coordinating a cross-Med invasion of Europe, building almost only fleets, which can overwhelm even determined resistance. With time maybe people adjust their strategies for this, but given the growing perception of North African invincibility, at least at the start of the game, it could create all kinds of perverse incentives, especially for Southern Mediterranean nations, who have no option but to either put all of their effort into disrupting this alliance (which is unlikely to be broken before substantial gains are made), or by helping them, thereby increasing the initial potency of the North African Alliance. Of course, later than the likelihood of a civil war is very high, but the initial invasion wave means playing Portugal, Castille, Aragon, Naples, Genoa and Papal States become very difficult, especially since there are no other nation they can look to with the potential naval resources to assist them. I expect that in future "choose your country" options for this game, those 6 countries will be avoided. Perhaps oasis SC located unevenly could be added in the Sahara to increase competition and early focus on land?
3. France seems to die a high number of times for some reason.
4. Nations that mostly rely on fleets seem to have a general advantage against mostly land based nations. But there's no good alternative to sealanes.
Anyone else have any other thoughts?

Idk if I'll ever do a revision of either this map or Divided States, as such revisions are a huge time commitment. However, all the points you mentioned are clear issues that I've seen pop up repeatedly.
1) Venice may need a tiny bit of strengthening, although I have seen a highly successful Venice in one game. That being said, Genoa is by far the weaker of the two and requires significant reworking to become viable, perhaps by consolidating them into just two centers of power with a lot of easy-to-snag SCs.
2) North Africa surprised me, but it is an obvious power bloc nowadays. The easiest solution I see is to dramatically increase the number of contested centers, which would make early conflict in the bloc more likely. However, I'm not entirely sure this would be enough.
3) France is just far too spread out right now and border a lot of foes that see them as easy pickings. They need to have a more compact core than they currently have.
4) The advantage naval nations seem to have is that they can snowball far faster than land-based nations, particularly those in the HRE. This isn't as much of a problem in eastern Europe, but there are just a few too many SCs in the HRE compared to the total land territories, which makes wars there prone to stagnation and limits the growth of HRE powers. The easy solution is to add a few more non-SC territories in the region.

An aside regarding the recent cheating incident that hit two games on this map:
I know personal unions are a thing in EU4, but please do not attempt to simulate this in Diplomacy. There are some good reasons why PUs aren't a mechanic here.
The main issue which we discussed in episode 50 (around 1 hr 10 mins in) was the way too easy connectivity between Morocco and "Egypt" via the seas. This is the one area I'd like to see corrected.

FYI - we also discussed how the map with some country tweaking to rewind it 200 years earlier would be a great Fog of War map during the Mongol invasions with Kaner making an excellent suggestion of non-Fog over countries with the same religion. Probably too hard to code, but would be great fun!
PS - I gotta say Technostar, regardless I love this map and Divided States. You just got to look at my games and probably the past 12 months 80% of the games have been on your maps :-)

Thanks again so much for your efforts! Greatly appreciated!

I know it’s hard to devote the time required to play-testing these large variants before implementation; and that it’s a chore to implement and recruit at the test site first. But I think it would really improve the variants if, for example, they were implemented here for four trial games as part of a regular process first. Then suggestions from those games and analysis by the variant creator were used to create the initial v1s (that, in the case of these large variants, may in fact never be returned to). Otherwise, we end up with some exciting but flawed variants.

That said, I do think Divided States is pretty strong as-is, though many of the states along the perimeter of the U.S. definitely have strong advantages. While I haven’t had the fortune or time to play the extremely enticing Europe Renavatio yet, comments from the players suggest this one could really use some corrections.

I don't think Mameluks and Morocco are too close each other. Mameluks have too strong starting position anyway. Usually QQ and Tunis aren't interested to attack against Mameluks because of too long distances, Genoa and Venice are just weak and Ottomans have enemies everywhere. Mameluks definitely don't need more safe corner position.

I think Scotland is very hard to lay on this map. With Norway's two neutrals right above Scotland, it makes sense for them and England to team, and it almost always happens, even in the one game where I'v e seen a successful Scotland.

I beg to differ, England and Scotland are quite far apart actually, so most games I see England/ Scotland form a quick alliance...

I think everyone is jumping the gun a little here. There are no finished games for this variant, and only a dozen active. Some are gunboat while some are press. Not a large enough sample size to draw conclusions from.

That being said, there are some things that can probably be looked into a bit more - namely the fact that a lot of countries have no-brainer openings for their first year's moves. If the positioning of centers prevents interesting and varied openings, then that's a potential issue to look at.

Yeah I actually think the problem with Scotland is not that it is too weak, rather that there is just a superior strategy you should generally go for if you can;

Allying with England and fighting Norway.

I mean the inverse is possible, it's just not as good and I feel will generally not happen often.

That being said games like this are so incredibly tough to balance and I appreciate how well it is already Technostar!!!

Moreover it *is* early to make definitive conclusions about balance (though I do agree about Genoa and the water Egypt connection).

I just recognized that the SCs aesthetically communicate whether the territory is a starting SC, a power's capital or an unoccupied SC.

And for the EUIV fans among us, I happened upon this today:

I think something needs to be done to buff Portugal, upon reflection. They just get demolished by Castille every single time, in the games I see. Aragon helps? Doesn't matter. Morocco friendly? Doesn't matter.

I have one suggestion that should be fairly easy to implement. The color for England matches the color for move orders. This makes it very difficult to see the moves on English spaces on the maps. England's color should be changed slightly so that the move orders can be seen against it.

Anyone want to take this world game?
I'm playing in World Peace Simulator-2, gameID=39267 , but I'm about to go away and am unsure if I'll be able to input my moves. If you are interested, PM me and I'll tell you what country I'm playing. I don't want to just say it here as the game is anonymous. Then I can use the country switch tool to give it away. Please take a look if you are interested.
Thanks!
