I just realized A Modern Europe is just the HOI4 map with some small changes.
This is the variant: https://vdiplomacy.com/variants.php?variantID=136
And compare it to Europe in this: https://i.redd.it/mu1rgb224w221.png

Simultaneous Solos
I’ve just realized that in the games where a solo requires less than 50% of the available SCs, two players could reach that mark at the same time. Does anyone know if this has ever happened on this site and what would happen if it does?

South China Sea Variant
I put together a variant based on the South China Sea dispute.

The seven players fight over tiny islands that are hard to defend. I think games should be pretty chaotic. Anyone interested in trying it out?

Country Switch in this map
Hi, I am Thailand on this map: https://www.vdiplomacy.com/board.php?gameID=53898#gamePanel.
I am really busy these days, trying to find a new player to replace me.
I do not want it turns into an open position because I do not want Thailand to miss turns in this game. Is there an experienced player who wants to replace me?

I think rather that the lack of humility was from Gopher. Calling me childish. Nïeve. For him it just turned into an insulting session rather than a debate.

"Nïeve."
Second time. I can't help but smile.

"For him it just turned into an insulting session rather than a debate."
Fair enough, but to be fair it wasn't really a debate in the first place.

"If you want to keep talking about it I can copy and paste the dms into here but I think that would be innapropriate."
I don't want to keep talking about it.

What is happening in the UK, anyway? Is this the point where they realise that coming back to the EU is actually the best way forward?

I feel like time is moving at four times the usual speed over there.

How would joining the EU make anything better? I guess the ECB is currently more able to print money than the BOE, but that would require joining the Euro. Additionally, anyone who thinks that British Pensions are more affected by asset/liability mismatches than Munich Re and Swiss Re are is probably being overly optimistic.

My take is that Brexit signaled the need for a partisan realignment, but since there is no system of primaries, all of the parties are paralyzed by having caucus majorities within their parliamentary parties that are functionally in opposition to their electorates. Then since party leaders are now semi-popularly elected, the major parties have leaders who have to remain somewhat aligned with the majority of their national memberships while the party's MPs are more or less openly rebellious. Boris and Truss are Tory versions of Corbyn.

Both major parties may be at the beginning of Bennite moments. Too much democracy on the one hand and too little on the other.

My personal solution would be to reintroduce the Fixed Term Parliament Act with modifications drawn from Sweden and the US. Have Parliaments sit for fixed five year terms, and once you have fixed date elections, require parties to hold party primaries 6 weeks earlier as a condition of ballot access. Rebalancing ridings could then be fixed to happen either every 5 or 10 years in a standardized manner. Then allow the calling of early elections without resetting the term timer. So if you need to dissolve Parliament, then you can have early elections with Party appointments of candidates, but the result is not a "new" Parliament but rather just finishing the existing terms. But I tend to view the absence of primaries as the root of all of the problems with British politics.

BTW, Twitter just delivered this to me:

"Let's briefly sum up some things:

1) Faith in the BoJ gone, JPY staring into the abyss.

2) Germany's PPI at 45.8% YoY, yes you read that right.

3) US 10y yields highest since 2008.

4) Diesel prices: Refiner margin 450% above 20yr average.

5) UK CPI YoY at a 40 year high."

More from Twitter this morning:

The Ukrainian Grid Operator has stated that Ukrainian energy infrastructure has suffered more Russian attacks in the last 10 days than in the preceding 8 months of the war.

So knocking out the power right before winter seems to be the new strategic approach. Doing so earlier would presumably have allowed time to repair and rebuild.

And just as a random aside...I saw something yesterday that attempted to holistically estimate the economic, strategic and geopolitical gain to various countries of the Nord Stream sabotage. The somewhat unexpected conclusion was that Iran actually benefited the most from Nord Stream being permanently knocked out.

Obviously, "motive" must be viewed hand-in-glove with "means" and "opportunity", but I certainly did not have Iran anywhere on my bingo card.

During the early stages of the American Revolution in 1777, the British gathered together the forces that they had in Quebec garrisoning the province, which had relatively recently been conquered from the French, and marched from Montreal along Lake Champlain and eventually down the Hudson River Valley. The plan was to meet up with Howe's army based in New York City and divide New England from the presumably more Loyalist Middle Colonies. The Continental Army relied upon the time consuming nature of besieging various forts in revolutionary hands to confront these forces separately. A third force marching in from Ontario through Western New York was turned back first. Howe's forces were turned back without direct battle; leaving General Burgoyne much more isolated than he had expected. His Native American allies abandoned him after the second American fort was taken at high cost.

At Saratoga, the Continental Army defeated the British Army in a fairly traditional land battle. Over the preceding two years, the Americans had largely found success through guerilla actions while being turned back when they attempted to stand against the British Army in traditional field battles.

The year 1777 is sometimes called the Hangman's Year as the American Revolution was closer to collapse than at any other moment. The Battle of Saratoga saved the American Revolution and the near annihilation of an entire professional British army served to bring France fully into the war and thus led the process of turning near certain defeat into inevitable victory.

I bring this up simply to offer one famous response to the event. Sir John Sinclair (coiner of the word statistics) said to Adam Smith (the father of Economics): "If we go on at this rate, the nation must be ruined." Adam Smith responded, "Be assured, my young friend, that there is a great deal of ruin in a nation."

There is always "a great deal of ruin in a nation". France is passing their national budget by fiat, and a third of their gas stations have no fuel. Things are rarely as extreme as they seem.

Thanks for sharing. Very interesting! It seems like this time Seymour Hersh couldn't get anyone to publish his investigative reporting, probably because it was based on a single source.

The Russians absolutely view the pipelines as leverage points, though. I'll share a shocking video (that a professor shared in class I took a decade ago) with a Russian military choir literally singing about it.

Will there be any political consequences in Europe if this is corroborated and Norway is accepted to have dirty hands as the US's main partner? The EU historically kind of screwed Norway on natural gas in favor of Russia, and as a result, Norway largely de-prioritized gas development.

Would surely give a boost to nationalist, anti US movements like the AfD though.
gopher27 (1606 D Mod)

But that is something different. My impression was that the revelation that Denmark actively helped the US spy on German political leaders was the bigger deal. The spying itself is what it is: Sarkozy using the French Intelligence service to monitor Strauss-Kahn as he was preparing to run for President against Sarkozy did not seem to generate much of a reaction either.

My question was about Norway participating while being the main financial beneficiary and subsequently being in pricing disputes with the EU. The "American" natural gas shipped into Europe has largely been sold by the Chinese who committed to buy it on long term contract under mechanically fixed pricing.

Do any of you play political rp minecraft or some other game?
I joined a political roleplay minecraft server recently where we build nations both physically in the game and on a custom map that looks similar to a diplomacy board. I've had a bit of fun making redstone farms and such to increase our economy, claim more land, and even make alliances with other nations. Does anyone else here have experience with minecraft political rp specifically or perhaps some other online multiplayer game?

How does game limit work?
Currently I can't join public games. It said, "Due to game limits you cannot join games."
However, when I click into "game limits" to check the details, it told me "=> No game limits apply".
Yet I still can't join games. I wonder how does this limit actually work, or is it a bug?

Variant Cataloging
I've been trying to keep track of variants made. Recently Stephen Agar came back on the scene and I am helping him amass variants over the past 20 years or so of his inactivity. I've made a google spreadsheet that contains the ones he's cataloged on his various websites and added a bunch that I knew of. I've also made a form to submit variants to be cataloged.
