Who is your favourite LOTR character and why?

Someone once did a thread on here comparing individual community members to what he asserted were appropriate characters from A Song of Ice and Fire (Game of Thrones). I believe that Amby was Renly. Such an exercise with Lord of the Rings might be fun.

Also Lord of the Rings is a pretty heavily didactive narrative, which handicaps the crafting of genuinely good characters within fiction.

"A novel is never anything but a philosophy put into images. And in a good novel, the whole of the philosophy has passed into the images. But if once the philosophy overflows the characters and action, and therefore looks like a label stuck on the work, the plot loses its authenticity and the novel its life. Nevertheless, a work that is to last cannot dispense with profound ideas. And this secret fusion between experiences and ideas, between life and reflection on the meaning of life, is what makes the great novelist." --Camus

Also you can’t really blame a novel for being too influential @gopher?

Or did you mean to say that it’s extensive descriptions make it’s characters worse?

I picked didactic over ideological, but neither quite hits what I meant. Tolkien was a brilliant world builder whose plots were deeply instructive and bordering on propagandistic in a manner that makes the crafting of good characters more difficult. Sam's reaction to Gollum and Frodo's reaction to Sam's reaction to Gollum is the only character interaction in Lord of the Rings that I found genuinely engaging. And I am still not sure that it is there as opposed to me projecting complexity onto the characters that may not actually be present.

I will probably have to say Treebeard. His dedication to his ways and his beliefs that nothing really changes are gruesomely challenged by his former closest ally and he changes despite his desire to stay neutral. He becomes Revenge. He becomes Passion. From ice to fire in a second, once he sees his closest are getting hurt. I both hate and love that attitude in him.

Outside of that:
Tom Bombadil and Aragorn. I'm a basic b****, I know.

I haven't given much thought to who my favorite character might be, but (at least from the movies) Théoden and the Rohirrim in general appeal to me.

@gopher, the same might be said about Dracula or the count of Monte Christo, still those, together with LOTR, arguably still have a deep impact on todays culture, literature, arts. Both good entertainment and thought impulses can originate not only from „deep“ characters, but simply by being dran into a story through the writer’s writing craft.

Lolita for example is still being read in big parts due to it’s linguistic beauty (I think).

I do not think that I said anything about entertainment or thought impulses. My point was about willingly suspending disbelief in the humanity of characters when they are cardboard cut outs acting out a passion play.

Plus the central lesson of Dracula (namely that only Texans are tough enough to kill vampires) is drawn with sufficient subtlety that many people fail to appreciate that they are being taught eternal truths about life.

The low number of people I have crossed paths with who can remember Lolita's name makes me think that people have read it for other reasons. But I would actually say that it rather supports my point. Lolita does not hold a great moralizing lesson that I am oppressively aware of, but all three of the central characters are deeply memorable and believable as human beings.

Faramir as he handled his stuff nicely and Meriadoc as he is so cool interesting.

Tom Bombadil is an interesting choice Johnny.

I think though I'll have to agree with JECE, Théoden is definitely a favourite. Although I do have a soft spot for Gollum.

@GOD....I just discovered that they have made a modern retelling of Dracula from the perspective of Renfield.

This could be hysterically funny and awesomely good. Or it could be awesomely terrible.

This does look cool, although very far from the Original, since Renfield in the original is already in the Asylum when Dracula arrives in Albion and never leaves it throughout the story.

Given that Texans are the death of him, Dracula relocating to Louisiana would seem likely to end badly for him. Of course, I am waiting for the story's feminist re-imagining from the perspective of unnamed blood skank #3.

Phase Swap?
In the "Create a New Game" tab, when you select the "custom phase length" option, a new drop-down menu appears: "Time Until Phase Swap." It has options ranging from "No phase switch" to 6 hours. I can't find any documentation on what this does. Does anyone know? Does it make retreats and builds shorter than movement turns? Any help would be appreciated!

If Xi Jinping had been recruited as a long term, deep cover agent by the CIA (perhaps during his visit to Iowa) a la Günter Guillaume, Anthony Blunt or Eleanor Iselin, what would the CIA have him doing differently to sabotage China as a potential competitor of the USA?
