I felt like making a Divided States map which I named “Well, rip us” (for obvious reasons). If anyone who is reading this hasn’t joined, they should as this could be really fun.

I’ve notice that a lot of people stop readying their moves—even retreats—when the game isn’t going their way any more. Is there a strategic explanation for this or is just to pout?

Airplane units
Several years ago, I played a Dip game that I could not fully recall. Not the people I played with, the power I played as, or the exact changes to the rules. All I could remember is that the map played on involved countries all over the globe; that, alongside armies and fleets, it featured aerial units (and even nukes)

Hey all, just wondering if we have any baseball fans here and if so what are your thoughts as your team starts playing games. In a country of 12 million people, having 500 shootings is hardly Syria. Sounds like sections of Chicago or Philadelphia. Haiti's history is particularly brutal and violent.

Did I not explicitly mention the Gandhi conviction and sentencing in Modi's home state?

I know...its tragic. I had always associated Uganda with assiduous respect for human rights and tolerance of homosexuality.

As for Lula, in the early going, it does not seem like Lula is seeking to govern in the manner that he did during his first two terms. I interact somewhat regularly with a very optimistic Lula fanboy who follows Brazil closely on a professional basis, and that guy has been getting quite pessimistic over the last few weeks as the outlines of Lula's return has become clearer.

"In a country of 12 million people, having 500 shootings is hardly Syria. Sounds like sections of Chicago or Philadelphia."

Come again? It's better having a dead forum that such stupid comments. Check the populations of Port-au-Prince + Artibonite and compare to Chicago or Philly. Then compare the number of total shootings in a year of a major US city (which is insanely high in its own right) and condense that to the span of just a few weeks. And that's to speak nothing of imagining gang control of half of a major US city, complete with systemic use of rape as an instrument of war and snipers shooting people at random in their own homes or outside schools. That's just the tip of the iceberg. Do you think for a second that the US government wouldn't send in a military force to wrest back control if a US city looked anything like Haiti?
gopher27 (1606 D Mod)

Chicago had around 800 murders in 2021. Chicago has less than a quarter of the population of Haiti, and Haiti had 500 killings in a quarter of the year. And yes, I did that calculation before posting, even as my comment was tongue in cheek.

In 2021, Chicago saw between 150-200 shootings on their freeways, mainly the Dan Ryan Expressway through the Southside. My understanding is that these were mainly people shooting at cars randomly from the side of the road, rather like snipers and presumably just for fun.

As for sending such an American military force into a US city, I live in a city in which that was done not too long ago, much as it has been done multiple times in Haiti since 1915. I am speaking off of the top of my head, but I believe that at the moment of the first US military intervention, Haiti had had something like 7 presidents in the previous 5 years with 4 having been murdered and the then most recent one lynched by a mob on the street. Although, that intervention was mainly about Monroe Doctrine considerations during World War One amid fears of British or French intervention in a country with enormous German influence.

People can pick their political poison with what I am about to say.

I offer a comment on the habits and behaviors of the American media. One of my friends from high school works for the Washington Post. A few years back, he won the Pulitzer Prize for National Reporting (one of the really big awards in journalism) writing about Donald Trump. The Washington Post essentially dedicated an entire year of a top reporter's time to trying to prove that Donald Trump was not "generous towards charities". Leading into the Iowa Caucuses, Donald Trump had claimed to have donated generously to charities supporting veterans, and a major American newspaper invested a full year of a reporter's time working to disprove an essentially vague throwaway line by a politician at a campaign event. This friend of mine from high school subsequently ended up being the journalist that the Clinton operatives leaked the Access Hollywood tape to.

Politicians are by their nature narcissists, and among other things, narcissists are defined by needing so desperately to be the center of attention that they have to inject themselves into any story being told in their presence. Hillary Clinton rather famously had to make an event with Edmund Hillary on a trip to Nepal about herself and claimed that her mother had named her after the mountain climber (6 years before he climbed Mt. Everest). And of course, Joe Biden is Joe Biden. "Corn Pop was a bad dude."

As I am periodically struck by the startling lack of curiosity that major American news organizations have about any number of things, I remind myself about how one of my high school friends was paid for an entire year to systematically investigate whether Donald Trump was "generous towards charities" serving veterans. I mean punchline, of course he wasn't.

Any way, I offer this little story to reflect upon any time you sit down to review all of the in depth reporting that The Washington Post did on the Nord Stream sabotage prior to the Seymour Hersh article.

One of my personal favorite non-stories is about the house that Barack Obama moved into when he left the White House. Obama rented a house estimated to be worth between 7 and 8 million dollars. The house is owned by Joe Lockhart, who was the White House Press Secretary during the Lewinsky Scandal in 1998. It turns out that the Obama house is one of seven multimillion dollar homes that Joe Lockhart owned in 2016. I know this because it was stated in a throwaway fashion by a major American newspaper in coverage of the Obamas preparing to leave the White House. Disclosure forms from Lockhart's time working in the White House make clear that he was a relatively normal middle class person on his way into the White House and somehow 18 years later he was worth around $100,000,000. Bill and Hillary Clinton accumulating $250,000,000 gets a bit of public attention, and Jared Kushner's business relations with the Saudis obviously merits attention, but even White House Press Secretaries somehow end up accumulating generational wealth after working in the public sector....presumably through proximity to political power.

@gopher there's a reason that kind of stuff is seldom reported on. Never shit where you eat.

@GOD WaPo reported a few weeks ago that US intelligence believes Ukraine or Ukrainian partisans were behind the sabotage.
@gopher, we could spend days on this post discussing how politicians become wealthy during there time in office. The McConnells, Polosi's, Boehners, Clintons etc. somehow become better investors then Warren Buffett. To call it " insider trading " is almost a joke.
gopher27 (1606 D Mod)
30 Mar 23 UTC
@The Desert Fox....I get that politicians become suspiciously wealthy after their time in "public service". In the defense of the congressional people you mentioned, McConnell's wife was extremely wealthy before he was elected to the Senate, Pelosi's family were very connected into networks of wealth and power before she ran for the House, and my understanding is that Boehner explicitly left Congress in order to cash in and get rich. Pelosi's brother was a long time deputy to George Mitchell (the father of fracking) in his quite considerable real estate operations, her brother-in-law (Gavin Newsome's uncle) was connected to Gordon Getty (formerly the richest man in the world), and of course, her dad was the long time mayor of Baltimore (as was another one of her brothers). My point was more about how someone very peripheral to political power somehow accumulated that level of wealth.

LBJ becoming suspiciously wealthy mainly through business transactions with a man who had similar business dealings with FDR's son during the Roosevelt Administration is kind of par for the course. And perhaps most interestingly, that bag man for Sid Richardson (Robert Anderson) who spawned LBJ's generational wealth later served as Treasury Secretary for Eisenhower and was supposedly considered for VP as a possible replacement for Nixon. But seeing Bill Moyers or Pierre Salinger accumulate generational wealth without ever really holding any positions of real power would be another thing all together. Joe Lockhart was never Bobby Baker or Clark Clifford or Brent Scowcroft.

And just in the interest of fairness, the preponderance of Ronald Reagan's net worth came from an "interesting" real estate transaction where a man named Jules Stein seemed to be standing on both sides a degree or two removed. The profit that Reagan made on that real estate deal is what allowed him the financial independence to run for President more or less professionally for 6 years from 1974 through 1980 without needing to seek a stable source of income.

For the conspiracy theorists among the audience, George Herbert Walker Bush's third son Neil is the one who always seems to have the most interesting business associates. He was professionally connected quite closely with the family of John Hinckley, Jr., who shot and nearly killed President Reagan while (former CIA Director) Papa Bush was Vice President.

Correction: the guy who used to run The Woodlands Development Company outside of Houston was Nancy Pelosi's nephew rather than her brother. In my defense, both father and son had the same name.

Yes because I'm sure it's so likely Mexico is going to give a big "fuck you" to it's (by far) biggest trading partner who is their neighbor and instead try to source things from across a literal ocean. I'm sure that's so simple to do.
Fake Al (1747 D)

I mean, it wouldn't surprise me if AMLO gave lip service to those kinds of ideas to back up his nationalist and anti-imperialist credentials. Anything beyond lip service is a pipe dream. Just due to US trade, Mexico would have massive potential if it weren't for corruption and the horrific drug trade. Being close to the US has been a curse, too.

Another commentary on journalism:

A few years ago, the midwestern American city of Detroit defaulted on its municipal bonds and declared federal bankruptcy. Nearly every major US TV network covered the story with a New York City-based news anchor conversing over a satellite link with field correspondent standing outside in front of a municipal building in Chicago, Illinois. For those of you unfamiliar with American geography, while Chicago is a midwestern American city, it is in fact a different city than Detroit. It is not even in the same state as Detroit. Hell, it is not even in a state adjacent to the state in which Detroit is located. I saw at least three different American news programs structure their coverage in this exact same manner, with a correspondent two states and 400 kilometers away from Detroit providing "on the ground" coverage of Detroit's finances.

Anyway, here is a British news channel, owned by the same corporation that owns CNN, covering political violence in Sudan via a field correspondent in Johannesburg (not even in Nairobi or Cairo). The reporter is literally just reading a press release from the American embassy in Sudan. Couldn't the news anchor in London just as easily read the press release from the US State Department from a chair in the studio? A Press Pool correspondent in DC reporting from Foggy Bottom would at least make some sense.

Has anyone ever played diplomacy in school?
I know I myself was ever able to, but some relatives did when they were in school. But perhaps some of the older players here played diplomacy in their history classes. I'm curious if anyone here has and if they have any cool stories to go with it? And maybe it's still used as a learning tool today yet even.

How do excused NMRs work?
So on a game I was playing in, it says something around the lines of "1 excused NMR / regain after 5 turn(s) / extend the first 1 turn(s)". So it leads me to believe that you get an excused NMR back after 5 turns, and wouldn't go into civil disorder.

Position within the Diablo 4's five classes

What they won't see is a wide variety of bodies, at least for each class. The Barbarian is strong and muscular for their position within the Diablo 4's five classes. The Sorcerer/Sorceress class looks strong enough to be able to lift books and wands, but they're not nearly as lean and athletic-looking like the Rogue.
