If I remember correctly, fast games (like your 5 min/turn Cold War) always wait for the given starting time, instead of starting as soon as everyone has joined. This is so nobody misses the start.

I'll try discord. I just don't like the interface here, I can't figure out how to clearly see a visual representation of current orders, the maps are hard to read. And the players in the two variant games I've tried are not interesting to play with.
