Advertise your NON-live games here!
In an effort to compromise the pro-ads versus anti-ads for games: Post here for your non-live games to cut down on the number of ads but still advertise games. Post game link, WTA or PPSC, and the bet. Note: this doesn't count for special rules games.

Return to Vdip
Hi All!

After a nearly 2.5 year hiatus from playing here, I thought it might be a good time to stop back over and take a peek at what's going on. I've missed some of the variants here, and am hoping to be able to gather up a solid group of players to play a few games (not all at once necessarily) and give me that variant "fix" I've been missing. Anyone interested in some top notch play?

Is there a reason I can't host this variant? I've played in before on this server, and I'd really like to try it again, but I can't find it in the drop down menu for hosting new games.

High School and College Diplomacy Clubs
Hello everyone! Are you in a high school or college Diplomacy Club? I'm trying to compile a list of schools that currently have Diplomacy Clubs, so it would be great if you could post here if you know of any or are part of one! School name, location, and a contact email would be great. Thanks!

Arctic warfare variant. What do you think?
I'm making a new variant, Arctic Warfare, featuring Scandinavia, Canada and Russia scrambling to control the Arctic. This is very early WIP, but here it is nevertheless.

Cannot join new game because "having trouble keeping up with the ones I'm in"
oops... just posted this in a current thread, sorry - lol - Does anyone kindly have a view. I'm in four games, with a couple about to close and I decided to join a new one... only to be told that I can't. I have a reliability rating of over 99%. What other factor may be affecting this please?

NWO goes MAD
The current NWO game being run at Redscape incorporated new experimental rules for the nukes: MAD (nuclear strikes can trigger automatic nuclear response). Spring 2005 sees 9 nukes trigger 3 nukes which begat another 3 nukes. Yikes!

Thoughts on improving vDip
As mentioned in another thread, I thought I'd summarise here my thoughts on the idea of vDip "dying". Please feel free to add your perspectives on avoiding this to the mix.

Icy, don't forget to check out the podcast. We haven't covered off Atlantic Colonies (although I'd love to do this one as its such a great map) or Migraine: diplomacygames.com, or check iTunes or Stitcher.

I think that making an app - with notifications when you got a move to do, and an interface that transports the orders to the site would make the site blossom.
And which environment would you porpose we make the app for? iOS? Android? Windows Phone? And who will do the development? We need to look at things we can *all* work on to get the site improved. Developers don't all work for free (I know I don't) unless the cause is near and dear to them. Kestas has/had a calling to create a great free diplomacy site and knocked it out of the ball park! Oli had (past tense as he is really no longer working on it) a calling and did a great job of setting up a variants site. Others have callings to develop different variants. Someone would need to feel the calling to develop the iOS, Android, and preferably Windows App. I could do two of the three (Windows and Android) but don't have the calling to do it. Perhaps someone else does.

So, I reckon there's quite a bit of money to be made here. It's a very interesting game, and the "tick based" game should appeal to a lot of busy people who like to play games, but can't find the time to sit down and play for hours on end. One would have to see it as an investment. As for which environment? I'd go for iOS and Android. It shouldn't be too hard if you let the server/site handle the code, and just have the app as a front for the server. You're asking how we can improve the site; I think the site is fine, but we need a broader audience.
There is no money to be made. The game is a board game. The sites are tolerated by the IP holders. But if we tried making money, the corporate lawyers would come knocking with cease and desist orders and injunctions and lawsuits.
Oh, and from a development perspective, a full set of web services would have to be developed on the server as screen scraping is not a very good idea.

Valid point. I didn't consider the rights. I guess you'd have to make a copy for it to work then. Or get them on board.
I believe Hasbro is the current holder of the IP. Making a copy would require significant changes to the mechanics of the game to not be in violation.

But if one of the other developers on here decided they felt the urge, they could do it for free. The real challenge then is adding a full set of webservices to the site that Oli and Kestas approve of so there is something for the apps to communicate with.

How much work are we talking?
In certain on the web services as I don't code PHP. The apps are not insignificant. I mean, we are talking a high end UX. Otherwise, why bother.
Should have been uncertain not in certain.

Some of you may or may not be aware of a recent fundraising driving we're having on webDip to restart development there (information can be found by following the links in the webDip banner). Given vDip is based on the webDip code, and we have no intention of changing that, these improvements should benefit both our sites. I've been keeping an eye on this thread, and any ideas people have for both sites are welcome to be posted on webDip in our thread there. Growing both webDip and vDip and ensuring the success of both is a key part of our plans :)

Awhile back, kaner proposed a Known World gunboat tournament in which 15 participants would play 15 games, one with each nation. I searched back for the thread, then just decided to start a new one. I want to see if there would be sufficient interest in this to try to get it off the ground.

Diplomacy Simulator
Hi! I'm new here and I don't know if it was already discussed, but it would be nice to have some sort of simulator to test out moves. Sometimes the rules aren't that easy to apply and it's hard to understand what would happen in a very tricky and unique situation...

diplom.org down?
diplom.org used to be the centre of the online Diplomacy community. Even long past its prime it held tons of interesting resources, variant files, articles, etc. For the last few weeks I haven't had any luck loading the site. Does anybody have any idea what's up?

Luckily, most of it is backed up by the Wayback Machine, hopefully that never disappears: https://web.archive.org/web/20161020130534/http://www.diplom.org/
