24 Jul 13 UTC Spring, 1901: Hello again!. Good luck
24 Jul 13 UTC Autumn, 1901: likewise!
25 Jul 13 UTC Autumn, 1904: Out of interest, how woud play Italy to begin with. The problem as I see it are; getting to Mar first, so not to get held in, getting and holding Tyr, again otherwise Ven can't go anywhere., plus stopping that fleet from coming round to MAO / Spain (which would aid in getting Mar)? It seems you have to cover all bases and doesn't seem totally possible, although I know people have won as Italy. I think I need to get a fleet in Ion to convoy across and then I could get around that way, but I never seem to be a position to do that. Wondering if Ven to Pie, Rom to Ven is good starting move. Still get two builds, but Germany would get three and be able to move into Tyr the following year.
25 Jul 13 UTC Autumn, 1904: You always need to stop Germany from taking Tyrolia, that is the key
your spring 01 moves were correct, it was in fall that you messed up. Italy is a slow builder, so sometimes it is necessary to delay a build in order to maintain a solid position. Next challenge is to stop German fleet from taking MAO. Which usually means that you may end up having to delay taking Spain.
25 Jul 13 UTC Autumn, 1904: It is possible to win as Italy having gone for two builds in first year, but you need to guess perfectly 02' moves and it only works if Germany makes a mistake. It is best to try and keep it safe.
25 Jul 13 UTC Autumn, 1904: I see in my game history that you beat me a year ago when I was Italy, but I will send you another game won as Italy so you can see how it started. Anyway, Germany does have an advantage, but a creative Italy can overturn it after a solid buildup.

Check this game out for instance. It was against a solid rival. When I played him as Germany barely managed to scrape an 18 to 16 win and on the Italy match managed to get a few lucky guesses to go with my initial rush for key territories.
25 Jul 13 UTC Spring, 1905: Thanks. I did think Tyr was key, as it stops Mun from going anyway. I do sometimes prefer to go for position in the Autumn rather than build, but I totally missed MAO. If I have unit there, Germany can the long way through or have two fleet units, gives Italy time. I'll check those games out when I get home.
Thanks for the advice by the way. I clearly need to study the map a bit more and look beyond the next couple of turns, to hopefully gain an advantage.
25 Jul 13 UTC Spring, 1905: With practice comes perfection . We all made mistakes in our first couple of games or when we decide to experiment some new tactics. So no worries.
25 Jul 13 UTC Spring, 1905: By the way, in case you lose Tyr because Germany overpowers you, it is sometimes better to lose Venice and then recover it than block yourself. But it is a very risky maneuver.
25 Jul 13 UTC Spring, 1905: That's the great thing about these 2 players and the game in general, two distinct areas of play to become successful.
25 Jul 13 UTC Spring, 1905: Can see the Ven point, depends if Italy is strong in France or East Europe I suspect to be able to claw back.
26 Jul 13 UTC Thanks for playing and for the advice.
