Well, I was fortunate at the start that Germany let me into Sweden, Turkey abandoned its initial hostility (and then CDed), and Italy attacked Austria, keeping that country off my back. That allowed me to accumulate enough units to attack Germany simultaneously from three sides in 1905 and demolish it in the space of a year or so--possibly the most fun thing I've ever done in a game of Diplomacy--which put me in easy striking distance of the solo.
