Looking at the move history, it seems like Russia and Turkey spent too long fighting around the Black Sea. That gave me the time I needed to take over most of the West before confronting them.

I think I made a mistake, taking Norway in 1899 instead of London. But either way, it looks pretty difficult for England to make long-term gains outside of the home island.
