But how is it that when I win this variant, I gain 2 vp, and when I lose it I lose 14vp? I've lost more vp on this game than I won in my last 3 results put together!

I think it has something to do with fact that you have way more than me so you are expected to win? I could be wrong on that though.

And you really only lost one flank, usually Italy takes all of Austria but Germany take Brest and Paris and there's a stalemate line with one of us in MAO and the other blocking him.

I had understood from my 2 pervious games on this map that holding Vienna was critical and I guess I achieved that but subsequently put insufficient resource into France...
