15 Dec 23 UTC Spring, 1960: GameMaster: Please remember that negotiations before the game begins are not allowed.
15 Dec 23 UTC Spring, 1960: Info: This is a choose your country game.
15 Dec 23 UTC Spring, 1960: GG.
Exactly, great stuff. My favorite kinds of games are ones with simple systems and complex emergent behavior.
My major is computer science, will probably also go for a minor in public policy. You?
16 Dec 23 UTC Autumn, 1960: Nah, my performance there was awful. Not a good game. You played well, tho.
There's my dutch directness.
16 Dec 23 UTC Autumn, 1960: Yep, I love those games too. Bonus points if there's no element of luck involved. No dice please, or at least don't make it the most important element.
16 Dec 23 UTC Autumn, 1960: Computer science, cool! My brother thinks about studying that. He's just finished high school. I study Business Engineering, we don't have minors in the programme, I believe most EU programmes don't have them. Before you ask (because every time I tell people what I study, they ask), Business Engineering is exactly what it sounds like. A combination of Engineering courses and Business courses.
I do have a very wide varieties of electives to choose from, and mostly choose computer stuff too. Want to work somewhere in Software after uni. Not as a full time software developer or coder, but in the industry. Somewhere between the Business people and the coders, that's what my study programme prepares us for. We learn to see both sides, I think that's pretty cool.
16 Dec 23 UTC Autumn, 1960: Any idea what you want to do after uni? In which year are you in, when are you graduating?
16 Dec 23 UTC Autumn, 1960: Interesting, never heard of Business Engineering but it does make sense. I used to be super into just programming but now I think I'd be more into the business side/applications of it too. Within CS though, most interested in machine learning/AI which is the trend right now anyway. So, no idea what I want to do after graduating, would love to have a remote job though. I'll be done in spring 2025, how about yourself?
16 Dec 23 UTC Autumn, 1960: I'll be done with my 3-year bachelor's in autumn 2025. And then I'll probably do a master's degree too, that's only one year long here. Perhaps I'll be going to another uni, maybe in Germany or the UK. We'll see.
16 Dec 23 UTC Autumn, 1960: Oddly, I am getting more interested in programming as time goes on. It's fun
16 Dec 23 UTC Spring, 1961: I was considering a master's but probably won't get one, definitely see the appeal though. I do love how easy it is to visit/work/go to school in countries other than your own in the EU, it's great.
It is fun! Just one big puzzle. Maybe I'm leaning away a little bit because I haven't had the chance to recently (all of my CS classes the past few semesters have been theoretical), but I'll get to program more next year for AI and networking classes.
16 Dec 23 UTC Autumn, 1961: Get one! It's only a year or two, and your pay after will likely be worth it. More people are doing bachelors these days, if you want to have a good position, do more. It's not a long time, and you get to stay and have fun in uni for another year
16 Dec 23 UTC Autumn, 1961: a puzzle is a good allegory for programming, indeed. Was thinking of something like that, but didn't really find a good word
16 Dec 23 UTC Autumn, 1961: Quite the different game already!
16 Dec 23 UTC Autumn, 1961: Fair point, still a possibility. And I can always go back to school.
16 Dec 23 UTC Autumn, 1961: Also, about this game: For me it's going quite well. You made a big mistake in the mediterranean now that could've been avoided. By moving out of the ionian sea when I have two units (three if you count Germany) that could reach Albania, that was a mistake. holding or moving to greece would probably have been better options. I am surprised by your move from Panama to the caribbean. You're trying to get Brazil, and you will get there, but at the same time you lose time to contain to my fleets around Australia. NATO only has one port there, when I play blue I usually try to shut it down by securing the east pacific and then pushing them back, but since you build two fleets in Asia already, perhaps it is not necessary.
16 Dec 23 UTC Autumn, 1961: Yes, perhaps we both just aren't good at playing the USSR. Next game I'll play them, see if it goes any better
16 Dec 23 UTC Autumn, 1961: But this isn't all lost for you. With some lucky guessing you can not die in europe and secure your lead in east asia
16 Dec 23 UTC Autumn, 1961: Live and learn! USSR does seem more difficult
16 Dec 23 UTC Autumn, 1962: Let's see if we do better next round.
