08 Feb 12 UTC Spring, 1901: Oops. I didn't realize you were a pro.
08 Feb 12 UTC Spring, 1901: You could say that...
08 Feb 12 UTC Spring, 1901: Welcome to vDiplomacy, by the way. Nice little community we have here, even if I mostly stay detached. Hope you enjoy your time here. :)
08 Feb 12 UTC Spring, 1901: Thanks. I've played this version before actually- with Imagonnalose. I'm going to try something different this time- which means you should probably win easily :)
08 Feb 12 UTC Autumn, 1901: Hmm, we'll see... haven't seen this kind of opening before.
08 Feb 12 UTC Autumn, 1901: Ah, I think I see what you want to accomplish here. Definitely misread the A01 moves (except Pie -> Mar, that was a given)
08 Feb 12 UTC Autumn, 1902: I'm trying to see how players react when their build centers are attacked. So it's actually a good thing you being a pro..
08 Feb 12 UTC Autumn, 1902: Clever! This opening has some potential...
08 Feb 12 UTC Autumn, 1902: Well, speaking personally, I don't really have a set reaction; it's largely my own intuition based on the circumstance at hand.
08 Feb 12 UTC Autumn, 1902: Heh. I'm not so sure. It's impossible to break through.
08 Feb 12 UTC Autumn, 1902: Your followup autumn move from the good spring move wasn't what I was expecting - but then, it's probably best that your followup isn't what your opponent was expecting. You have one thing down that a lot of players, veteran and inexperienced alike, don't ever seem to get: pressuring build centers is critical. You haven't put yours at risk and you've been going for mine for a straight year, which are both very good things.
08 Feb 12 UTC Spring, 1903: Sorry for the delay. I need to think about this next move!
08 Feb 12 UTC Spring, 1903: No worries, take your time.
08 Feb 12 UTC Autumn, 1903: Gah. You read my mind.
08 Feb 12 UTC Autumn, 1903: I like to think I can do that sometimes.
08 Feb 12 UTC Good game!
08 Feb 12 UTC And congrats :)
08 Feb 12 UTC Thank you. Good game to you too! I still think that opening had potential... I have my own favorite as Italy, but I'll see about trying it out sometime soon.
08 Feb 12 UTC If you can figure out a way to pressure Germany's BCs (and win!), please let me know. I still think it's possible- I just made a hash of it. Anyway, thanks again, that game was fun.
08 Feb 12 UTC Well, I've gotten a few wins as Italy, but very few of them were based on direct pressure of the German home centers. My preferred strategy as Italy is actually to run "The Lepanto" - not unlike the standard opening, you move Rom > Apu, Nap > ION and Ven > Tyl, but you then convoy to Greece. Your other army probably bounced in Tyrolia to start, so it moves to Trieste to get a second build; in the event you're actually in Tyrolia, you definitely want to take a shot at Munich to force Germany to defend. Anyway, from there you build army Naples and army Venice, and start pumping armies into Austria. With the 3 builds you almost definitely get in 1902, you build army Venice and fleets Rome and Naples, then move west to get Marseilles, Iberia and anything else you can. All future builds after that go to reinforcing the east. The main battle gets fought in Austria; win it and you essentially win the game, because the 3 units going west definitely wrap up the west most of the time, and Germany can't get to Turkey before you can most of the time. And once you win the battle for Austria, you can bring heavy pressure to bear on the German home front.
