22 Mar 12 UTC Spring, 1666: (airborne): It's you!
22 Mar 12 UTC Spring, 1666: (Neil): Come onnnnn Pirate.
22 Mar 12 UTC Spring, 1666: (The Ambassador): Aaaaarrrggghhh, pull up a stool on the poop deck and let's have a rum to celebrate me hearties!
22 Mar 12 UTC Spring, 1666: (YouCan'tHandleTheTruth): Thank you Mr. The Ambassador for doing this great variant. I've always been a fan of Sid Meier's games in general and this one in particular, plus I love the "Master and Commander" and "Dread Pirate" boardgames. so "Thank ye, matey!"
22 Mar 12 UTC Spring, 1666: (Captainmeme): This looks like an amazing variant - quite complex though..
22 Mar 12 UTC Spring, 1666: (The Ambassador): No worries guys. You can't imagine how many days I sunk into this. Fortunately it brings together every single suggestion from the VDip community - including a devastating hurricane! The only thing Oli and I couldn't crack was getting all that complexity to work with Fog of War. But all in all, I expect our community will really enjoy this one.
22 Mar 12 UTC Spring, 1666: (YouCan'tHandleTheTruth): Huh? What? What hurricane?!
22 Mar 12 UTC Spring, 1666: (The Ambassador): Have a read of the rules Jack Nicholson. Time to batter down the hatches!
23 Mar 12 UTC Spring, 1666: (Shep315): you know I keep trying to set game limits for myself, but you guys just keep releasing cool new variants ;)

in any case, prepare for my best Jack Sparrow impression, savvy?
23 Mar 12 UTC Spring, 1666: (ezpickins): I call spain.
23 Mar 12 UTC Spring, 1666: (crixno): Lol I want Spain too or the black pearl ^_^
23 Mar 12 UTC Spring, 1666: Holy shit! The same power I had when I was part of the first playtest, on random country assignment twice now! Mind blowned!
23 Mar 12 UTC Spring, 1666: argh I be a pirate lol
23 Mar 12 UTC Spring, 1666: Spain be mine knives!
23 Mar 12 UTC Spring, 1666: Knaves - I hate android.
23 Mar 12 UTC Spring, 1666: wow this is a epic variant! thank you, The Ambassador!!!!!!!!
23 Mar 12 UTC Spring, 1666: No worries lads. Hope you enjoy it!
23 Mar 12 UTC Spring, 1666: yeah! IT LOOKS SO FUCKING COOL! OMG CANT WAIT UNTIL IT STARTS!!!!!!! Where did you get the idea? it looks a lot like the sid myers priorates map, is it modeled off of it?
23 Mar 12 UTC Spring, 1666: I got the idea sitting in the terminal of Singapore airport coming back on a holiday.

"Pirates. That'd be a great idea," popped into my head.

I then posted on the forum the idea (while having coffee at Changi) and waited for the communities' ideas to flood in:

- Including privateers who couldn't attack their supporting country and vice versa (I'd never even heard of a privateer until the forum discussion and researching it!). Tip of the hat to Oli for the coding so they can't attack each other.
- Having special SC's that gave an added benefit (X marks the spot are the only places you can transform units.) A fair number of the special SC's names came from the VDip community
- Having only fleets (no armies), but having one class travelling twice the distance (clippers - which drew on the knights coding from Germany 1648) and one class with a bonus attacking strength (frigates). That functionality was brand new and again was developed from scratch by Oli.
- Build anywhere (easy - done)
- Include some Voodoo magic (done - giving canal like powers across Cuba)
- And the biggie... a devastating hurricane that randomly appears (start of the second game year in 1667) that moves randomly to an adjacent spot and WILL destroy everything in its path by autumn. This was a massive new concept (which came again from the VDip community.) I'm once again indebted to the brilliance of our site admin and host, Oli, who worked out how to do this. For a guy to dedicate as much time to this site that he does, and for no money and no real ask for thanks, I truly believe we do not know how lucky we are. Hip Hip Hurrah for Oli!

The only suggestion which we tried to include but couldn't due to the code screwing up over and over again, was also having Fog of War. At the end of the day losing that functionality was well worth while in bringing the Pirates variant to you.

And incidentally I'd never played or for that matter heard of the Sid Meyers game until I started looking at maps on Google. I drew some inspiration on some SC placement using that map, but apart from that everything you see here came from my own mind, our amazing community and Oli's coding brilliance.
23 Mar 12 UTC Spring, 1666: you and oli are epic for creating this :D
