So I have sent an offer to all 3 remaining players to TO a strong abandoned position...
...and none of the them even has the courtesy to write back and say "No thanks." How are we supposed to help if the players in a passworded game won't let us have the password. It's not like the player who left will come back. He has been banned for crying out loud! Oh, and the game is paused and I doubt the leader is just going to agree to draw at this point as he has the dominant position by far.

Temporary absence - Looking for sitter(s)
I will be away next week (Monday-Sunday) and have three games which will require sitting or pausing. I have requested a pause in each of them but it would be great to get a sitter as well, in case the games do not pause. Does anyone want to take any of my games for a week?

Units switching places
In the most recent phase of this game: http://vdiplomacy.com/board.php?gameID=7079
Units in Mayan Gold and Campeche switched places. Isn't one of the rules of diplomacy that should even hold with double-move units that two units never switch places? Is this a bug?

Looking for a solid variant and a new game to play on it...
Recommendations anyone? I looked at American Conflict but as I dug into it, the idea that you could get from the Great Lakes to the Mississippi through Illinois bother me. There is no way to do it in real life. And if you are going to have the Mississippi River, you should include the Ohio River - no less important in the grand scheme, although that is forgivable. I juts can't stomach the notion that the Great Lakes connect to the Mississippi.

So recommend a stable variant for me to give a try. And sign up if you want to play! It will be 24 hour or greater turns and full press. The rest is flexible.

The idea that you could travel from Denmark to Sweden by land is prosperous. We are talking about a 75km stretch of ocean, and the idea that you don't need a fleet to get tanks across that gap is just unrealistic and unforgivable.

Dude its a game, its a representation of North America, but its still just a game. It was probably included for balance reasons or something.
@fasces - Tru dat. I guess I'm more forgiving of taking tanks across water (ferries?) than ships across land masses. Maybe I shoudl let go of that one. But it just feels so wrong. Maybe had they included the Ohio and had it connect up - after all the distance from Pittsburgh to the Great Lakes is a lot shorter than nearly the entire length of the Indiana/Illinois border.

But, OK. So is it a decent variant? Fairly well tested and bug free with reasonable balance? Does anyone want to try it with ol' Draug... er... YCHTT?
fasces349 (1007 D)
23 Apr 12 UTC
I actually think it has more to do with you live in the area. Since you know the geography of Illinois you have more to complain about.

I actually thought the Mississipi connected the great lakes with the Gulf of Mexico until you brought up the issue.

As for whether I want to play, I think I'll pass. I hate variants which require more then 20 scs to win (with the exception to the world maps) since I hate ordering 15+ units around.
Pick a variant you think is good then. And yeah, just as the Denmark thing probably bugs the hell out of others who live in northern Europe and Scandanavia. I'd love to play with/against you, fasces.

Alcavre is pretty balanced,
Greece is well balanced in one of my favs (you pick your starting territories in Greece)
When played properly Hundred and Verdun are very balanced, but they are 3 player variants.

There are probably others. But I haven't taken a good look at most of the variants on the site.
OK, so I really like Greek Dip. The bidding for starting SCs adds an intriguing element to the game. If you are willing to play, we just need four more.

Just a fyi - due to the lock and canal system built near Chicago over the years, the great lakes DO connect to the Mississippi. Its while I they were built.

Now that said, in this time period, those didn't exist.

Yeah, I was going to mention the canals and locks near Chicago, particularly known to me because they caused some invasive species to fuck up my Great Lakes fishing.

Edit : the Illinois and Michigan Canal was.completed in 1848. That means boat transportation from Lake Michigan to the Mississippi was possible in the American Civil War.

Krellin has an account here?
So I guess a game of Greek Diplomacy:
Fasces349
Draugnar
Krellin
lets make it a conservatives only game, but then again it might be hard to find more members, lol.

krellin (1031 D)
23 Apr 12 UTC
Oh that guy? He's a blast. I love him. Little off the deep end sometimes...but sometimes his sarcasm and humor are just not understood. Either that or he's a raving drunk lunatic.
fasces349 (1007 D)
23 Apr 12 UTC
If you know that much about Krellin either you're him, or you have an account on webdip. Which means you're probably him. :P

23 Apr 12 UTC
This is not the krellin you are looking for. Move along...move along...
If you're still up to debate different variants, I have found that Colonial Diplomacy is pretty fairly balanced. The stats will say otherwise, but the only player with a slight advantage to begin with is Japan, imo. And that can easily be erased by an aggressive R/C alliance.

Also, I have rather taken a liking to Europe 1939, though Poland is bloody hard to play. Still, that's a fun variant. Only thing wrong with that is France is at a disadvantage imo.
fasces349 (1007 D)
23 Apr 12 UTC
@Gold: you don't like Greece? I think a battle of us conservatives would be fun on the greek map.

Colonial is to big, I wouldn't mind playing Zues 5 (although I think its inbalanced)
I've yet to try the Greek variant, actually.

How conservative we talking here? USA? Or European?
fasces349 (1007 D)
23 Apr 12 UTC
Continuing with the list of known conservatives from webdip:
Fasces
Draug
Krellin
Gold
PE?
A pm string with Canaduh suggests that he is a conservative, but he isn't a webdip conservative...

That would be the 6 we needed. If PE and Gold agree to join...
Think we could get TC over here?
But still, its finals so I can't join a game for two weeks. If you're starting one after May 8th, let me in haha.

"How conservative we talking here? USA? Or European?"
Well from countless political debates on webdip some of us have a more conservative voice then others.

The typical voice on the internet is generally a liberal or socialist. By conservative we really just mean the right wing voices that speak out against the majority of liberals and socialists on the internet.

canaduh (1293 D)

And we should better define conservative, as I am a little confused. Are we talking playing style, political affiliation, music taste or sartorial elegance (to name a few)?

Concede button has huge influence on diplomacy!
Example: 4 players are left, quite equally matched, and EoG is higher in comparison with normal, so a 2way draw is more likely then normal, 3 of them work together to kill the other one, 2 of them plan to stab the 3rd when the 4th is dead, however, the 4th votes concede, so no reason to not vote draw unless you plan to stab...
It could influence the outcome of the game big time, i doubt that was the idra... Questions? Opinions?

Summer League Game
Ok all, we had a few drop out of the first one and some that do not wish to play this Variant at all. So here is the new link to the Summer Game. It is a Known World variant. We might need a few more to sing up. So if you can bump up the Summer Game Post in the forum until we get this kicked off. Go ahead and drop the other two as I am about to do the same. Wolfman out.
