Newspaper Game
A while ago, some players in threadID=80668 discussed playing another Newspaper game. Meanwhile, more than 7 players have shown their interest to participate in it, but no consensus on the specific settings of the game has been reached yet. I have created this thread to set up the next Newspaper game and discuss its settings.

limited number of games
I can only be in 2 games at once since I'm a new player on vdiplomacy, however I've played a lot of diplomacy and know how to play the game. It should include the number phases you have taken on normal diplomacy while determining how many games you can be in.

Game number 28
I've been analyzing the ratings of some players recently (Yoshimon, ksindelar, and I), and I've noticed a really odd pattern. In each of our 28th games, we've suffered a major drop in rating, but our ratings quickly bounded up in the 29th game. Is this a coincidence?

Returning
I last played, like... 10 years ago. Was watching D&D video where the guy talked about this game, and I remembered, "hey, yea, that was a lot of fun. I remember kicking ass with California!" Not sure how many people still play this? Started up a new game to go fetch some of that nostalgia.

Custom Variants
Is there a way to create custom variants, maybe with custom, fictional maps, in a game? Because I want to do a little something for me frends aaand idk seemed fitting

Such spaces, if they were present would certainly NOT "hardly ever be used in a game". Indeed :
• moving through such spaces allows to move even further ;
• occupying such spaces will actually be necessary in order to hold a complete line of defense.

What's more, the largest variants, and that is particularily visible in the "Divided States" variant (variantID=105), allow the premature formation of stalemate lines. That is caused because the ratio between the number of SC spaces and the number of non-SC spaces is too high. Having non-SC spaces touching no SC space would help creating large variants that do not allow too early the formation of stalemate lines.

Moreover, having some "desertic" areas in a very large variant could allow some very interesting strategic maneuvers.

You're right, I overstated when I said that they will hardly ever be used. And I don't mean to suggest that a designer should never break "the rules". This map has quite a lot of sea spaces that touch no SC spaces, and they would allow for outflanking opponents, and certainly would help avoid stalemate lines. But there is something to be said for being aware of the ways most successful variants are designed.
Evariate (1000 D)
09 Mar 19 UTC
That ain't the final version, no. There are SCs to be added, and about the "Sea Provinces that ain't touching no SC" it is to avoid how boats can overpower. Like, a big fleet could win that easy easy. But, again, not the final version.
I finished the thing, though, and am waiting for Oli's thingy to do the the thingie
Evariate (1000 D)

https://imgur.com/a/Qdiqnlz here is what I think'll be the final version.
QUESTION, I can put like, fleets and armies and stuff on territories that belong to no player, ain't it? Like, just so player would have like, trouble conquering certain regions.

Uhh you can have units in neutral SCs, yeah

Two things about the new map: first, there is a small section of the border missing between Aeoliland Sea and Svafareyjarian Sea. Second, you now have a center on Cheese, and it touches only one space. So, anyone who owns Cheese can never be dislodged, and also can never be eliminated. I suggest you rethink this detail, maybe adding another sea space that touches Cheese.
Evariate (1000 D)

"Anyone who owns Cheese. Add a sea touching Cheese."
This sounds funny to me for some reason. Thanks for the touch, I'll do that.
Also, that thing between Aeoliland and Svafareyjarian Seas, a friend of mine had told me about it, but for some reason I forgot to fix it? Gosh beat me
KingOfSwords (1497 D)
09 Mar 19 UTC
Yes, it sounds funny to me too. ;-) But hey, it's your name, not mine. There's also an American children's playground game that ends with the line, "The cheese stands alone", so I keep thinking of that, too.

KingOfSwords gives generally good advice in my view. Let me also say a few things.

On aesthetics:
Some connections are hard to spot. For instance, does Mauvemarke border Ataterouts? Making so many islands belonging to other provinces in sea provinces can lead to confusion.

On game balance:
I would recommend to leave multiple diplomatic options open for every power on the board. This means that countries should not be set up to be each others natural enemy. For instance, suppose that there is a power owning the three southwestern supply centers (Losteuqua, Polux and Bruyevsk). Then that power could almost only attack the power occupying Baltic Counties and the other supply centers to the northeast of that; he simply would have nowhere else to go. Most players would regard that as bad map design, since most players enjoy the diplomacy aspect of the game, which should allow any pair of players to be reasonably able to work work each other.

On a practical note:
You can change the map later at any point.
Some shameless self promotion you may find useful. Check out the two part Diplomacy Variant Roundtable in Diplomacy World, in which I participated, as well as my three article *Design of a Variant* series in the Pouch.

"Second, you now have a center on Cheese, and it touches only one space. So, anyone who owns Cheese can never be dislodged, and also can never be eliminated."
That is what I don't like about the corner SCs in Duo.
"Anyone who owns Cheese. Add a sea touching Cheese."
An alternate solution would be to make a land bridge connecting Cheese and Brys West.
There are also several spaces that have two coasts. You might want to label those two coasts (or make canals):
- Lacona
- Schmalensee
- Dekks
- The Great Plains
- Ghasi Southeast
- Alvero
- Marcuse Plains
- Baltic Counties
Oh yeah, and then there are the ones that look confusing:
- Mauvemarke
- DSA
- Oskarborg
Finally, can you merge the two Solidarity Seas into one? Otherwise, passage through them would be a bit slow.
KingOfSwords (1497 D)
11 Mar 19 UTC
I just noticed the unlabeled body of water between Levo, Tratnel, Lake Valley, and Bevandia. Is this a space, or is it impassable? If it is a space, then Bevandia has to be added to the list of spaces with two coasts.
Evariate (1000 D)
11 Mar 19 UTC
It's impassable. It's there for the sake of the geography of that world. Those are the Not So Great Lakes, and they don't have a major connection with the sea, so putting them boats there would be basically useless
KingOfSwords (1497 D)
11 Mar 19 UTC
North Alvero is another space with two coasts. And Marcuse Plains has three coasts.
Sky_Hopper (365 D)
13 Mar 19 UTC
Yep, missed North Alvero.
Also, can you label which SCs belong to which players in a clearer way?
Sky_Hopper (365 D)

Also, minor graphics glitch: Aeoliland Sea and Svafareyjarian Sea are missing a border between them.

I think I can make out the outlines of a few players. For example:
- Propatria: Mons, Proia, Cen. Propatria, Drevia, Capital
- Korolevia: NES Korolevia, Cen. Korolevia
- Kilapso: Ecrek, Ablgano, Daznix, Emiv, Levo, Tratnel
- Brys: Svafareyjar, Brys NESW, Polar
- Kyara: Monentagro, Bonigrad, Slalezia
- Greater Meridian: The Great Plains, Taliand, Podomovsk, Veradiji
- Greater Esharia: Ubrea, Gyllipus, Esharia, Adrana, Whitbia
- Vishakha: Talamia, Appaloosa, Vishakha, Starise, the two Alveros
- Not Scandinavia: Bruyevsk, Losteuqua, Polux
- Opala: Opala, Cen. Opala, SE Opala
I'm sure I'm missing some, and the names are probably totally wrong. I made educated guesses.
Evariate (1000 D)
13 Mar 19 UTC
Well, Propatria is right. Korolevia is right too. Greater Meridian is wrong, but it would be a cool edition. Opala is Opalaland. Kyara is actually Illyrian, but the owner of the nation in the "RP" is called Kyara.
Evariate (1000 D)
13 Mar 19 UTC
addition*, not edition. Dammit, autocorrect.
Also, Kilapso is wrong. It's actually Student Loan Debt. And I'm not even kidding.
Not Scandinavia would be Syvis.
Stonefort (915 D)

If I wanted to create a variant that involved more than changing the map, how could I go about this? I'd like to fiddle with the actual programming. For instant, let's suppose I wanted to merge the Fall build phase with Spring move phase to save time. How would I be able to get hold of the code to write these changes?
Enriador (1507 D)

@Stonefort, vDiplomacy is open source. You can check the code right away on Github: https://github.com/Sleepcap/vDiplomacy.

"I wanted to merge the Fall build phase with Spring move phase to save time."

That may save time, but it will cause absolute havoc, say Austria builds A Tri and moves into Ven instantly, without the trusting Italian ally even seeing the possibility of a stab coming.

Additions to New Game Rules?
I've been noticing that Oli has been more active recently so I wanted to bring this idea up again. People were wondering if variants such as Grey Press or Fog of War could become rules that are applicable to to all game modes rather than just the classic map. This could be done by adding them as options when creating a New Game. It would make for some very very interesting games in my opinion

Age of Pericles
In the "Age of Pericles" variant, the map clearly shows that Euboeius Sinus and Thermas Sinus border each other (top right). However, the movement between them is apparently not possible; this is confirmed by looking at the map info. However, given that the map shows them as clearly in contact, isn't this a mistake?
