WWIV in China
Might we add Shenzhen and Canton? Guangxi, Guiyang, Guangdong and Guangzhou confuses me. Are there other alternative names so that we can avoid having 4 similarly named places contiguous to one another? I'm sure Manitoba, Minnesota, Milwaukee and Michigan might confuse a non-American more than say Winnipeg, Minnesota, Wisconsin and Detroit.

Hiding talk tabs
After joining the WWIV game and looking at the amount of tabs, I wonder if there could be an option where you could hide the tabs to people you don't need to talk too yet? Obviously you should be able to unhide it too for later, but it would make it much easier to talk?

I don't know how hard this would be though

Classic Game.
In this scenario it is unlikely that any other units will have an effect due to alliances and other conflicts. AUTUMN MOVE

Player A has ARMIES in BUD, VIE, GAL, VEN

Player B has ARMIES in ALB, SERB,RUM.

TRI is empty and belongs to player A. BUD belongs to player B although player A is in situ.

Any advise please?

It is consider un-fair-play to ask or give advices about an on-going game (which seems to be the case).
If you want to become a better player, think out by yourself, instead of relying in someone else's. (who, in addition, doesn't necesarily have to know the game better than you do)
Guaroz (2030 D (B))
20 Feb 11 UTC
I second Rox. The point is what Serbia does. In the RoxArt's way, if Ser works with Alb you lose Tri but you gain Rum and keep Bud. If it works with Rum, you keep both Bud and Tri (and, if you're Austria, build in Tri) unless he play Ser>Bud in wich case you gain Rum and lose Bud (empty because of the bounce: Bud remains to B)

@ Daaichi & Everyone. Really? I often see those kind of threads but you're the first one who says it's unfair. I'd like to discover what the community of this site thinks about it. Everyone who read this please say "Unfair!" or "Fair!". Thank you :)
tt612 (1404 D)

it's unfair for you to ask advise when your opponents don't, and there is a common courtesy to not discus games in progress. However also it is risky for you. this is for your FOW right? first off you give away army positions that other players normally didn't know (disregard reporting through chat because they are not guaranteed to be honest.) Even more importantly though is the other player(s) using the advise to change their own moves to counteract what is given here.
RoxArt (1732 D)
20 Feb 11 UTC
I don't think it's unfair, I mean he gives away much information others can use, and the others can ask for advice too, so why should this be unfair :)
Daiichi (1339 D)
20 Feb 11 UTC
go to webdip's forum and open a thread there asking if it's fair or unfair. they'll be almost unaninous: It's like playing 100 minds against 1.
unfair but not extremely - at least you can ask geneal suggestions instead of particular ones (ex: if there is the case where a player has an army in a not-owned supply-center, and another has an army, etc..
RoxArt (1732 D)
20 Feb 11 UTC
Are you scared from him asking here? I'm not ;)
Devonian (1887 D)

I vote not unfair. There are no rules against it. Besides all's fair in love and war.

I think it is more of a "mores" issue. "fixed morally binding customs of a particular group" (meriam webster). So, it think in this forum, it is a binding custom not to ask for help in a particular game, but it is not intrinsically unfair.

Can someone ask a friend what to do? How about reading articles on the particular situation? What if the rules are unknown on the the situation, can they ask for a clarification to the rules in an ongoing game?

tt612 (1404 D)
20 Feb 11 UTC
rule clarification is a different subject than tactical advice and is more welcomed.
Pimlico (1097 D)
20 Feb 11 UTC
I am sorry to have asked... not expecting this response. It is not my FOW game. It is actually a game on another site and I had made my move before seeing any answers to the question posed. (I worked it out for myself). In future I will respect the etiquette of the forum and only ask retrospectively or for hypothetical scenarios as I truly learn the game.

Thank you all for your thoughts.

@ kaner: I didn't, but that doesn't stop me from being Genius! :)
Daiichi (1339 D)
21 Feb 11 UTC
@ Pimlico, i wans't stating that intending for you to feel bad, only so that you know how the things goes. I agree that it's not intrinsecally unfair, but commonly agreed to be. Also, unfais is maybe not as accurrate as "not polite".
Also, since the move has already been made, my move will be:
Ven to Tri
Vie s move to Tri
Gal s hold Bud
Bud s move to Tri
That way you're guaranteed to keep trieste (via bounce) and to take Bud away from player B, and have a 50% chance of getting your unit in trieste, thus having better position for next year.

I think it is perfectly OK to ask for advice if it is for a game on another site, but it would be preferrable to avoid discussing on-going games on this site.

I'm similar to Tadar, I started on webdip, and found this one through other members. but then I didn't have time for live games anymore and classic long games were becoming too mundane compared to variants. So I left the site.

Slow, Low-Bid game
Looking for players for "close contact" gameID=623. Seven day phases, 5 pt bid. Anonymous game to keep it more interesting given the small-ish pool of active players. Looking for a casual game, so don't join if you will be mad the turns actually take 5-7 days. Password is pork. Anyone is welcome to join.

WWIV - target SC's`?
How many SC's should be possible for the win, and why. I've set this to 50, because it might be really complicated to give 50 units commands for a turn (with 1 day/phase). But I'm willing to raise (or lower) this based on input here.

Grey Press and Why it should be Added Everywhere.
every game should have the option to post 'grey press' by using the option "grey :" to anyone and anywho. I don't think that this should be a variant as such, rather a function that can be utilized in any game that anyone is playing that involves communication.

Improving GreyPress
I got some suggestions for the GreyPress variant and want to discuss if I should implement them.
1. Players should not be able to send normal Messages, only GreyPress, so it's not possible to authenticate with a colored message.
2. Remove the last-seen and online notification.
