What if you know someone that plays this game in real life, but are not friends with them or you don't know someone in real life, but you are friends on the site.

You can just send a message to the mods if there are problems with your usergroup.
This feature is not to bash freinds playing games here, but to protect them from Multi/Metagaming accusations.

however this doesn't encourage cheating, if you always and only ally with people in your friend group, you will still be punished.

I don't know anyone from this site in real life, but it's telling me I can't join the gun boat version of sea wars because I know some one in the game.. And my relations on site are clear as well. So there are some bugs associated with this..

Does living in the same city as someone from the site(s) but not knowing them until you met them here/there count? How about if you met someone on the judges and introduced them to webdip/vdip?

What is a rlGroup?
A rlGroup is a list of players on this site who know each other in real life (most likely from school or work, but could also be friends or family).

Why have rlGroups?
The purpose of the rlGroup is to make it easier for the Mods to track people who know each other in order to make it hard for multis and metas to work. RlGroups are not meant to stop friends from playing against each other, it just is to make the other players and mods aware that you know each other in person.
Remember, if you know your ally in real life, it is easier to communicate verbally, then just online, this gives players an advantage that they shouldn't have in an online game.
The rlGroups makes the other players aware of this, which should reduce peoples ability to metagame or have multiple account, reducing the amount of cheaters on the site.

What if I want to play with my friends?
Don't worry, friends will still be allowed to play with each other. Playing with someone in your rlGroup just means that there will be a message at the start of the game informing players that you know each other.
However during game creation, it is now possible to make it so friends cannot join the same game. In these games it is no longer possible to join with rlFriends.
The default setting for non-anon games has this turned off, but for those players who are scared of metagaming, they can turn on this setting.

I created a game for my friends only, but other players joined before it started...
During gamecreation you can choose to allow only players in the same group as you to join your games, however make sure you have enough friends who will join this game, otherwise the game may be canceled because not enough people joined.

How do I add/remove friends to my group?
You can't change the members of your group. You need to contact the mods at the modforum. If you do not report someone that you know as being a friend, then you may be penalized for potential metagaming.

Doesn't answer the question though. I know fortknox via email and will someday meet him in real life. But he is no different than any other player on this site or webdip. Just because there is the potential of him and i having a drink and playing poker sometime in the future and just because i have his email address doesn't mean i will be treating him differently or communicating with him about a game outside game channels. Likewise, I introduced crazyter to webdip. I've never met here so I guess she is precluded from the rl group. But i have a hard time considering someone i met because of webdip to be a rl friend.

This is more a tool for us mods so we don't need to ban everybody that looks remotely like a Multi/Meta.

Sometimes we have about 20 people from one school and with this tool we can check who in this group plays by the rules much easier.

We have this tool in action to tag suspicious players for about 2 weeks now and the default was that you can't join anon games (as we can't reveal who knows each other at the beginning of the game) and all other games without a problem.
I made this a setting to allow players in a RLgroup to join anon games.

If our multiaccount-tool does not ring bells (and it does not for you and fortknox) there is no problem at all...

So it's more about people who will have IP addresses that match at some point (school/office) or are from the same block kind of thing. Gotcha.
