@ YCHTT yes, but it was just a suggestion: Diplomacy is funny as well without RL friends ("I believe").
It doesn't imply I think that playing with them it's wrong as butter says. To be sure to be not misinterpreted, I added "This doesn't mean you must not."

@Guaroz - It's probbaly a language thing because "you should play without friends more often than you do now, I believe" is passing judgment and telling him what to do to a native English speaker.

@YCHTT. Uh, ok. Sorry then. I thought there was more difference between "You must" and "(I believe) you should". The latter sounds like a suggestion/advice, in my language, that you might follow or not.
However, if "you should" is such an imperative form that tells you what to do, I wonder why nobody asked for clarifications about the contradiction it makes with "This doesn't mean you must not (play with your friends)" and instead they've found easier take for granted that I upheld that it's wrong playing with your friends (or this is how I read things like "@Guaroz- there is nothing wrong with him playing with Nemesis"). In my language, we'd say :"You are putting in my mouth words I didn't say".

Actually, I would describe the word "Should" as "a strong recommendation" or "this would be best" more then a "must" type command. However, it is a telling word in English. Most times when "should" is a suggestion and not a "recommendation" the words "might" or "maybe" are usually attached.

Before I start my rant I need to say that there are some RL persons that I play with. We usually play "only RL friends" games as they are really enjoyable. I really don't see the fun in playing 5 friends and 2 random persons, that game would be so weird.
One of the friends is my roommate too, so we play from the same ip. We used to be very active and it has happened that we have joined the same game, especially with variants like world diplomacy etc.

And here comes my point: I really don't think I let myself be influenced by it. Realizing at the same time of course that that's bullshit: playing a non-anonymous game and recognizing any name will ALWAYS influence you, but online friends/enemies and real life acquaintances all the same...

I would like to argue that this no-friends option will just not accomplish anything.
1) if you're trying to catch multi's they won't register as friends...
2) if you're trying to stop people from beeing influenced by the people they play with, then all games will have to be anynymous and completely randomized. Don't think anyone would like that.
3) My personal sense of what's fair compels me to register my real life friends when the site asks me too. It's also that sense that makes me not cheat and try my best not to let anything outside a game influence my decisions in the game. I've had situations were people muted me after a stab so they would not have to play with me again. I've had people say "looking at your other games it shows you you never honor a austrian-italian alliance so I wont accept your offer". That is more unfair than me playing with a rl friend, but trying NOT to be influenced by it.
My real trouble with the no friends thing is this: It will just "punish" the honest players, because they might not be able to join as many games. While at the same time we don't need to worry about honest players, they are not the problem with this site, they are what makes this site worthwhile.

Hey i found this site cause people i played with moved grew up or stoped playing.
Only been 6 months and found heaps of great people to stab... sorry play with.
Had several games destroyed by multi player think nofriends only as good as registration and sign up allows.

People will always try work the system, abuse or other wise screw things up. thats life.

Worse thing i find is cd's and nmr's can't be avoided.. shit happens.

@Guaroz - "Should" doesn't mean "must" ("shall" is the form that means "must") but it carries with it a weight that means the recommendation is important. "May" was probably the word you were looking for. For instance, you should change your oil every at least twice a year but you may want to change it every 3 months.

Agreed with YCHTT on that last point:
@Guaroz- lets use it on your sentence, "Only, you should play without friends more often than you do now, I believe". now replace "should" with "may want to" or "you may find it fun to" and you get "Only, you may want to/you may find it fun to play without friends more often than you do now, I believe" and you get a much less demanding sounding, less likely to be misinterpreted sentence :D totally understand why there is the confusion since English isn't your primary(I had forgotten that because you speak it pretty well).

"you may want" sounds damned strange in Italian! :))
"you may find it fun" sounds quite better, but it doesn't look like a suggestion...it sounds more like a statement of what could happen or not, whithout implying I'm giving an advice or implying that who's listening could get a benefit from my words...

btw, nobody still told me how did it sound: "This doesn't mean you must not (play with your friends)" Which part was not clear?

@Guaroz- that part was perfectly clear, it was the rest of it that made it seem like a negative statement towards playing with friends, which we have cleared up with you now :D

Yeah - It was clear you weren't stating he couldn't, but the rest gave it an intonation like you thought he shouldn't in general. Should not and, conversely, should are very strong words often used by the courts here to encourage someone to "doth right thing" even when they can't enforce it. Should is a demanding word and may is an encouraging word.
