Scottish Independence - An historic act of bravery or madness?
So this time tomorrow we may have a new (old) country on that funny little island that sits of the coast of Europe. I'm interested to hear from people about what they think about this, and as it is yet to happen, what way you think they might vote...

The Lost Art of Reading Orders (feature request)
Because you need to click on a link to see the orders, I feel like players on this and other sites are not paying as close attention to the orders being issued. I know they're being shown graphically, but that can be ambiguous or hard to notice; reading the orders makes you notice things you might not have, like why something is failing or what another country is trying to do, or tell you (for gunboat games).

I'd suggest placing the latest set of orders just below the map.

A discussion of the merits and balance of the various two player scenarios...
Also, an offer to try any of them so long as they are unrated. I don't mind a loss and consider it a challenge to hang in as long as possible in the somewhat unbalanced. Although never again will I play Russia v Germany.

I would argue that the potential for a piece to move quite literally from one corner of the board to the other in one turn via convoys adds a dimension not found in chess. The only thing close is castling. Most chess pieces have a very limited set of moves, there's just more of them. But while there are only two types of pieces in Diplomacy, there many more possibilities for those pieces to act generally speaking.
And I hope kaner is enjoying our set of games as much as I am. He is definitely my equal, if not my superior, in strategic and tactical play and is really challenging me with some unorthodox moves. I hope he can say the same of me, but fear my moves are rather pedestrian.

Enjoying them yes, but I am far the best 1v1 player on this site. In fact there was a tournament held a little while ago, and I was trounced every which way by some of the better players.

*far FROM the best... oops freudian slip there. :)
Hmm, I was ready to assume he's scared, but I suppose he might have me silenced. Someone please quote the following:

"Eden accepts your challenge. Your pick of map and country out of the following: GvI, FvA, EvT. See you soon."

I believe the current 1v1 champ on vDip is Devonian.

@ YouCan'tHandleTheTruth :

Being myself a former chess player, I can assure you that tactics in a Diplomacy game is almost non-existent compared to tactics that you can find in a chess game.

Tactics in a 1 vs 1 game indeed do not exist. When you add other players into the mix, as DIPLOMACY is played, then you add all sorts of new twists and tactics, THEN the game becomes fun and challenging. One vs one, that's just stupid. You want to play it, knock yourself out, but please do not tout the "merits" of a two player game as this threads topic states. Please drop the statistics so many here point to that make them look superior, beating another player in a 1v1 game and having it compare on your stats to a standard game is a joke and I know many here play 1v1 simply to pad those stats. Who's kidding who???

"Being myself a former chess player, I can assure you that tactics in a Diplomacy game is almost non-existent compared to tactics that you can find in a chess game."

Winner, winner, chicken dinner! Retillion with this week's award for the dumbest comment at VDip, and considering the crowd here, that's really saying something. Then again maybe if you actually PLAY a Diplomacy game instead ofd loading them up with shell players that do what you tell them to do, you'd begin to understand how exponentially more complex Diplomacy tactics are. The reality is that you duck the talent here and pick on noobs, and even then you have a cast of automatic allies to back you in every game. Who needs tactics at that point. You've already scripted the win. Try playing against competitive players.

Raro, I'll give you a game in a couple weeks. I cannot do it now because of various schedule constraints. If you need to test your theory now I encourage you to play Devonian or Gummers, and allow them the role of Germany.
Eden, I have quite a few with kaner right now. After this weekend we cam get one or two going. I don't have you muted, just busy keeping up with 4 1v1 games plus others.
@Tom - Go the fuck away. You don't like it. We get it. So bigger the fuck off.

@Ruffhaus

The theory is currently being tested, right in the middle of a game and, it's a nail-biter.
I must say that I had a large advantage a couple game years ago, but due partly to a slight misorder and a couple great moves by Germany (brett72), it's very much up in the air, and I think brett might be the first to defeat me as Italy. I may have lost my 1 on 1 touch, not taking anything away from brett's great play. more later...
You got it, YCHTT. Let me know when you're ready.

I came up with this idea to help Oli with the webdip exodus as well as just in general. How would you all feel about a independant forum (like a proboards style) for online diplomacy players?

Possible to implement this rule variant?
I was wondering, is it feasible for a variant like Ambition and Empire (http://www.dipwiki.com/index.php?title=Ambition_and_Empire) to be implemented on vDiplomacy? It's not just a map variant, it also has a few additional rules. The biggest one is the Diplomacy Points: you get one per supply centre you own, and can issue one order to a neutral unit per point. Others can do so as well, and the order most commonly given to the unit is the one that gets used.
