This seems to be a very balanced map I would however make a few changes if I was to try to put this on this site.

New Variant? enhanced naval combat ideas
Hi folks,
I have an idea for a variant that might be able to improve some of our large games, particularly the WWIV map.

Its conception has come from previous discussions particularly about gameplay being affected by lack of sea-zones or ease of setting up a stalemate. Please read below:

Classic with Switzerland.
Hi! Nobody ever thought of doing a variant of the classical with Switzerland as a SC? I think it would be very fun the struggle to control it between France and Germany and also Italy and Austria.

Italian Team Game- Bidding wars revisited!!!
So we once had an Italy team game where the team captains bid on other countries to be on there team with a point-type system, but it never quite made it. I want to retry it.

So- there will be 3 captains(Venice, Stato, and Napoli), they will start with 100 D... the bidding will start with Napoli, he will bid a certain amount on one of the smaller countries(Will go into more detail on the order the countries will be bid on in a moment)... He can either bid(atleast 1 point) or pass, meaning he wishes not to bid on that country, then the bidding will move to Stato, who can either bid higher than Napoli, or pass on that country, and then the Bid will go to Venice, who has the same options, bid higher, or Pass... bidding will continue until two of the three have passed on a country therefore the third gets that country as a team mate... The bidding will start with a different of the three powers each round(second round Stato, third Venice, then fourth back to Napoli)...
The order that countries will be bid on is:
Turkey
France
Ferrara
Siena
Pisa
Savoia
Genova
Milano
Firenze

Once a captain runs out of points, he is no longer in the bidding process and his team will be set at that number of people. If someone bets 100 on a player, they will automatically get them as their team mate(but that would make them there only team mate).
mongoose998 (1344 D)

now you say "on a player". by this do you mean on a nation/home supply center? or like are actual players that clicked 'join game' sitting on the sidelines waiting to be bid on?
butterhead (1272 D)
25 Nov 11 UTC
like the nations themselves. so say Stato wants firenze, he would bid on him...
kaug (1220 D)
25 Nov 11 UTC
but the players should be determined as well, because maybe someone chooses milan whom you think is an awful player and do not want on your team so you can decide not to bid on that nation.
adammaa (1323 D)
25 Nov 11 UTC
Even though i don't talk much around here on this forum thing, This sounds like a great idea to me.... I think you would have to be careful though of who you pick just becuase of their postion compared to your postion. Like you getting a team mate that Prolly won't be able to do much and maybe could just be preventing your growth. So you would have to go elsewhere that will be slower to expand, while maybe your team mate will end up as lunch if you don't protect? I haven't looked at the map yet so i could see if what i said could actualy happen.
butterhead (1272 D)

@Kaug- if you don't want to pick a player because you think they have low skill, then you can simply not pick them, but I feel the skill will be decent enough, and I won't allow anyone with a reliability rating lower than 85-90% join this game.
butterhead (1272 D)
25 Nov 11 UTC
Indeed adammaa the balance on this map is very important, so picking the right nations is key. I know in our first attempt, we had two teams of 3 and a team of 6, but the team of 6 was much smaller nations, so balancing larger nations with centralized ones is a good plan.
Guaroz (2030 D (B))

Nice idea.
What if all 3 powers get to 0 and the bid is not over (say Milano and Firenze are still to be bought)?
What if two bids on the same small power are even and both captains involved refuse to raise their bid? How do we break the tie?
A team of x players is committed to have a x-way draw among themselves? What if someone gets defeated? The game is over when the players of only one team are on the board, right?
Players are allowed to grab teammates' SCs for tactical purposes? (supposing this should be agreed)
butterhead (1272 D)
25 Nov 11 UTC
A) If all three powers get to 0 and the bid is not over, those remaining will be free to pick which team they join, but they will not be allowed to join the same team(Ex: Milano chooses to join Venice, Firenze HAS to pick either Stato or Napoli)
B) There will not be any even bids on a power, with this system, the next bidder in line MUST either bid higher or pass on the opportunity to get that power
C)yes, say a team has 3 players, they must eliminate the other 9 powers, then draw among themselves. If a player on the winning team gets defeated, than the team just draws one man down from where they started. the game is over when only one team remains. players CAN grab teammates' centers If and only if it is agreed on by both the powers involved in the process.
adammaa (1323 D)
25 Nov 11 UTC
I don't see too well, how all 3 powers can run out of bid points. becuase let's say Stato is out of points, Venice has 20 and Napoli has 20. They are still at pisa. Venice ends up getting pisa but uses up the last bit of points and now Napoli is left as the only one with points. Wouldn't then Napoli gets to have the rest of them?

When you bid, do you lose those points even if you don't win the bid? do you keep your points until you actualy win that player?

And would you Think of adding a Minimum bid of 5 D or something? In case it comes down to the situation one great power is left with points so you could still end up having some players picking who they want?
drano019 (2710 D Mod)
25 Nov 11 UTC
adammaa - It's possible. Trust me. We tried this on old OliDip and it happened. What happens is that one captian bids HUGE on a player and almost runs out, and the other 2 run up the bids on players until only 1 player has a lot left.

An example: assume Stato and Napoli have 10 D left each, and Venice has 60. He can bid 11 on 5 players in a row and there's nothing Napoli/Stato can do about it. That puts half the board on Venice's team.
adammaa (1323 D)
25 Nov 11 UTC
I guess it's hard to figure a way to stop it? Actualy are you looking to stop something like that? Actualy instead of minimum, what about maximum bid?
butterhead (1272 D)
25 Nov 11 UTC
I was thinking of that(because I was in that game with the game drano was talking about) but I'll get into that in a second. also, adammaa, it is possible that all three could run out, but highly unlikely, much more likely that 2 will run out and one will have enough to bid on the rest...
As for the way to avoid the problem with Venice out-bidding the others, really what you have to do is measure how valuable a player is for your team, and bid carefully, enough to scare off other players but low enough to not bid so much you can't get other players you want... not sure how else you could stop it, max bids would just kind of screw it up a bit...
drano019 (2710 D Mod)
26 Nov 11 UTC
That sounds great butter, its when bidding wars happen that the game gets skewed. Alas, I dint think there's any real way to avoid it guaranteed. I'd suggest you pick captains wisely though
gopher27 (1606 D Mod)
26 Nov 11 UTC
If you want to steal my ideas from that train wreck of a process, I think you should keep the little guys as the bidders/captains.
gopher27 (1606 D Mod)
26 Nov 11 UTC
Venice/Naples/Pope is still pretty uneven. My whole point in attempting to have a bidding process was to deal with the fact that Venice and Naples are so much more powerful than everyone else.
butterhead (1272 D)
26 Nov 11 UTC
It would either have to be the three biggest(the 4 center powers) or the three smallest(France, Turkey, and one of either Pisa-Siena-Ferrara) to keep the balance of power fairly even... but the point behind Stato-Venice-Naples as captains was so that no two of them could be on the same team... the last thing we need is a Venice-Naples-Firenze-Milano team to come out, that would completely destroy Stato and all of the 1 center powers around them...

Question (perhaps I've missed it): Will the country assignment be random? Will the game be paused - complete the auction - and then unpaused? Phase and bet?
butterhead (1272 D)
27 Nov 11 UTC
Yes, the game will be paused for the auction, the phases will be 48 hours, and since it's experimental, bet will be 5 D.
as for the country assignment, yes, it will be completely random.

Variant Idea: ClassicTransform
I think the Classic map would be very nifty with a Transform function. It would really keep all the players on their toes.
IE: Fall 1901 Italy Convoys to Tunis. France thinks "oh, just a lepanto, im ok"
Spring Italy transforms it to a fleet, oh noes!
thoughts?

Build Anywhere - Can't Build!
I'm playing as Britain in gameID=4478 and have 9 units, but 12 scs. The game has just turned to builds but I have only been given 2 new builds. I thought in a build anywhere then I would be able to build 3 this turn as I have more empty scs.
Any thoughts or help appreciated!
