Hey all, Im thinking of starting another one of my treaties/war declaration games, like the kind that we did a lot when the site came up and I was wondering how many people would be interested before setting a game up

Pause needed
Hi, i've asked for a pauso 3 days ago in this game: http://vdiplomacy.com/board.php?gameID=543
since i'm going out of the city due to spring break (aka easter) and i won't have any internet. Since there are still 2 people left to vote for pause, and i depart tomorrow, i'm asking for a mod to pause it. The unpause date would be sunday.
Thanks.

No lying
Would anyone be interested in a game where the players are bound by a moral contract in which they are not allowed to lie to the other players.

Very interesting. To what extent would twisting the truth be allowed? Public press?
fasces349 (1007 D)
17 Mar 11 UTC
not public press, just whatever comes out of your mouth has to be the truth. Other then that standard diploamcy rules apply
Jimbozig (1179 D)
17 Mar 11 UTC
This would be so hard to umpire. But it is great in principle.
tt612 (1404 D)
18 Mar 11 UTC
agreed, if you come up with regulations and rules as well as a way to enforce them, I'll be interested.
Jimbozig (1179 D)
18 Mar 11 UTC
I think it would be a good exercise in being vague on not promising much. Have to be really careful about what you say.

Could be especially good if you could play on fog of war
fasces349 (1007 D)
18 Mar 11 UTC
fog of war it is.

Like all the games I create like this with certain rule changes (most of them have been on fb diplomacy) it is entirely user enforced. When you sign up, you agree to play with the rules set out from the beginning, and the only punishment is the dent in your honor.
fasces349 (1007 D)
18 Mar 11 UTC
so by signing up, you agree that you will not lie during the course of the game.
drano019 (2710 D Mod)

I love the idea. It would help everyone involved in future games of Dip where lying WAS allowed since we'd have practice bending the truth but not quite lying.

However, I think FoW isn't a good idea for this one. While we would all have to agree not to lie, there'd be no way to hold anyone to that. What if Italy talks to England and England says he's going to open to EC but doesn't. Italy doesn't know for sure what happened, and England could always deny he said that to Italy. At least without FoW, Italy would see for certain that England lied and could out him.

I think FOW would be good if you had a legitimate way to enforce things in a hard and fast way. I agree with drano that it would be hard to go honour code on it.
fasces349 (1007 D)
18 Mar 11 UTC
It has worked in the past, of the 6 games played like this (rule changes on honor), 5 of them the players did follow the rules, and the 6th the mistake was done by accident, by me (I accidentally moved to Piedmont when I was suppose to move to Burgundy)

I think that FoW will be bad for this first time, but maybe for the second one after we know the players are trust worthy.
tt612 (1404 D)
18 Mar 11 UTC
I'll sign up. if not FOW, then what map.
Graeme01 (1224 D)
18 Mar 11 UTC
Sure, I'd be very interested. Would it be somewhat like a war declaration match where if you're going to attack someone you have to say so? Or would it just be that you wouldn't be allowed to tell anyone anything that's not true? What about breaking alliances?
fasces349 (1007 D)
18 Mar 11 UTC
So should we play a good ol classic game for this?
fasces349 (1007 D)
18 Mar 11 UTC
You can't tell anyone anything thats not true.
If you tell someone your going to do something, and then change your mind, you have to tell them. You don't have to announce that your attacking them, you just have to bend the truth.

People so far:
Fasces
Butterhead
Graeme01
Jimbozig

TT612

If you are on this list and backing out, please say so. If not we have the necessary members and I could create the game.

Graeme01 (1224 D)

So now we have 8? That knocks out classic.
ashleygirl (1285 D)
18 Mar 11 UTC
If you want more than a five buy in I understand.
Benibo (1143 D)
18 Mar 11 UTC
What if you tell him that you are going to attack him just 5 minutes before the phase ends? That would not be against the rules, but it is not the intention of your idea, I think.
fasces349 (1007 D)
18 Mar 11 UTC
you don't have to tell them that your going to attack them, unless you told them earlier in the turn that you weren't.
fasces349 (1007 D)
18 Mar 11 UTC
However you have to post that you change your plans as soon as you can, otherwise its more or less cheating as you are lying to them for a bit.
fasces349 (1007 D)
18 Mar 11 UTC
as for the map, sengoku is 8 player
Jimbozig (1179 D)
18 Mar 11 UTC
Isn't the idea you can't change your mind? I mean, you can't say "I won't attack you in the first three years" and then say in 1902 - "Sorry, I've changed my mind." That is normal diplomacy.

Say you're discussing moves and you say "i will move to Munich". But then you get some intel and realize the move would fail, so you you can go to England and say "got some new intel, do I have permission to redact my previous statement"

I'm not sure I really want to play this game if it is not the classic map of some kind. So I may opt out.

if you play it's Japan, if you don't, then it goes back to Classic?

How do I know if a game has paused?
I think I cocked up by playing a move and gained an advantage as a result of not pausing as I thought I had.
Could someone take me through the process. Thank you

Guys what do you think if a Fog of War mode is made available to every variant? It is more realistic as you don't get perfect information every time in a war.
