Is there a position in the Classic map, where three powers are in a stalemate, but neither can make any headway into the other notwithstanding any alliance?

So Germany's third most powerful ally just got invaded with no reason?
Take Away Hungary and add a sc in the territory to the north of Yugolavia, add that to Yugoslavia and you get a 3 sc Yugolavia in its historic position.

The reason I suggested a German was to represent that Finland was a German ally.

most of the oil is situated near the cost line, and once against I press that most of the combat was on the coast as the inland was, for the most part useless desert.
ezpickins (1610 D)
09 Jun 11 UTC
where do i remove an SC to make up for the new one? Macedonia?

i realize they were allies with the Germans, but i think that would give the Germans too much strength, a unit that is neutral to start however would play a more historical role.

and the oil thing, not entirely true. i realize it is mostly useless, but I am not 100% interested in Historical accuracy, look at this map of algeria, my map isn't exactly accurate, but i represents possible oil places http://www.worldatlas.com/webimage/countrys/africa/dznewzz.gif and it should be Grand Erg Occidental instead of oriental
fasces349 (1007 D)

that doesn't make it more useful, I would remove the sc and add one in the balkans for Yugoslavia...

fasces349 (1007 D)

most of the more important fighting happened in Europe...

Also you should consider adding a 4 sc America across the Atlantic...

ezpickins (1610 D)
09 Jun 11 UTC
its a good thought, but i like the players as is, and i don't think America sitting in the corner will add much to game play for teh work it would take, I am however looking to create a map that has both Theaters of war, which involves an expanded Russia all the way to Vladivostok, A china split in two, a japan, British Commonwealth Territories (IN addition to England itself) and the USA.
airborne (970 D)
09 Jun 11 UTC
Well the Americans didn't really made much of an impact till 1942 even then it was in a strategically low value North Africa. I must express a veto against such a chance, it would be impossible for Germany or any nation to mount a serious invasion of North America till conquering Europe and America didn't really want to get involved till Pearl Harbor.
ezpickins (1610 D)
09 Jun 11 UTC
While i agree with the logic behind Airborne's thoughts, i would argue that if Germany, France or England wanted to invade the US, it would be feasible so long as they didn't have conflict on the continent. They could easily attack a place like New York and cut part of America off in order to get the US to give them land somewhere else

09 Jun 11 UTC
woah there buddy, ever heard of anschluss? Germany had control of Vienna and Tyrol (and Czech and Slovakia was a vassal) at 1939. I think Yugoslavia should have a Sarajevo (Bosnia) SC. Cyrene/Bangazi is British again, lol
ezpickins (1610 D)
09 Jun 11 UTC
while they had control, it matter little, due to the lack of SCs correct?
i still don't know why it keeps turning pink.
Bosnia sounds good to me

ezpickins (1610 D)

so i am thinking bosnia instead of macedonia (remove the SC there)
airborne (970 D)
10 Jun 11 UTC
IMHO, an enlargen, coasted Bosnia and take out the SC would help, yes
Fauxlosophe (1191 D)
10 Jun 11 UTC
There's been a lot of legitimate fixes since when I first saw it but I still don't understand making Yugoslavia a power. They were sort of an after thought with the whole war considered, they lasted 11 days. Spain is iffy as well, as it was still recovering from a civil war and wasn't really that powerful in the first place. It would be difficult to balance against France as well. I'd leave the SC in Madrid, Cut Gibraltar out of Madrid and make it a British Home SC and make the rest Neutral, to make Spain essentially not worth invading but not powerful enough to be it's own power. I'd say the same for Turkey, but they're slightly more bearable.

Ireland should be impassable by the same logic as Sweden. North Ireland as an empty territory is optional still, but rather redundant at that point. Also the border is pretty wonky, giving the British control over significantly more than Ulster.

Next up, I'd say while the borders of the nations proper mostly match on the map [Not perfectly, particularly Germany, which is occupying Danzig and Alcase-Lorraine], the individual territory drawing is rather arbitrary. It ignores and even outright prevents major historic battles.

Having a Tobruk reduced to a city surrounded by Libya [or some province of Libya] and the sea, would make difficult enough to take that it could be used to recreate the siege of Tobruk. In Egypt, I'd make El Alamein and Cairo as the two principal cities. El Alamein should be attackable from two neutral territories west of Libya. I'd say give French Africa two SCs; one in the Algeria and one in Tunisia. If possible leave them unoccupied and thus vulnerable to attack in the first year.

Poland, I'd say should be split into Warsaw and Brest, since the Soviet Union and Germany split it. Major SC in Russia should be Leningrad, Stalingrad, Moscow, Kiev and Sev. Kiev should be able to attack Brest during the first round.

Finland should either home a neutral army or count as a Germany Territory right off the bat. Letting them not even be worth occupying for the Soviets is an out right shame.

France mean while should have some kind of advantage with the Maginot line, but it actually starts off occupied by Germany. I'd say give the French "Rhineland" as you call it, rename it either Metz or Lorraine and have it boarder only a single Germany territory, likely a Supply Centre to account for the one they lost. Call it Rhineland, Frankfurt or Cologne.

To Central Europe, I'd say allow Italy to immediately move on a supply Centre in Yugoslavia. Possibly by merging Slovenia and Croatia. Make Austria a SC.

To the Mediterranean; Consider making Crete a SC. Give the Brits a Fleet in Al Alamien and an Army in Cairo. Let them have a chance to occupy Greece or Crete and Palestine [though make it risk leaving Egypt proper open to Italian occupation.]

Basically you want Austria, Warsaw, Holland and Denmark to fall naturally into the German hands Year One to make them a Eight Centre Power Right off the Bat. Maybe Nine if they get Finland, but the Centre there should be useless.

Russia should get a point for the Baltics, Brest and possibly Romania. Finland on the other hand should be a pain in the ass to grab.

France should be invincible to German attack unless Belgium falls, but lack much offensive ability in the initial game. Here, they are skewered before play begins; No Natural SCs to claim round one and at least four potential enemies on all sides.

The British should be able to rival the Italian bid for the Mediterranean, which they are not, by the looks of it, unless they get Turkish support.

Yugoslavia is just wrong. While Spain and Turkey should be Neutrals that are just not worth taking.

Looks pretty good...can I suggest Madrid and Yugoslavia have standing armies starting in them though (a bit like Germany 1648 with the free cities).

Oh and I don't really think Rome being all the way across Italy really works...Venice down like the classic map would look better in my opinion.

Right! That's a lot closer to what I was thinking, except Volvograd/Stalingrad should be in 15, not 14 and should probably be an SC instead of the Caucasus.

I screwed around with the boarders myself, and while I still resent the best I could do with Russia here are four possible variations.

The maps would, of course, work with a free-for-all theme, but it is impossible to run a WWII simulation on it because EFR would crush IG.

Well anyways Diplomacy as it self should be more like BM Powell 1900 since the game starts in spring 1901 instead it was created to reflect pre-war 1914
Fauxlosophe (1191 D)

If it was to be used a WWII simulator, I'd imagine the Russians would be [initially] subject to the same non-aggression treaty that they were subject to in real life. Making it Germany and Italy vs. France and England, which would be rather even, possibly even to the Axis' advantage. As such it'd probably be a matter of time limit for the Western Allies to "Hold" until the Russian Cavalry arrived.
Hi everyone. I got involved early on in this thread and then got busy (still busy but thought I'd drop by.) Just to say well done, this little project is coming along swimmingly. A big hats off to Fauxlosophe for breaking down the thinking and then doing the map. A couple of comments as an observer:

- I think the neutrals/no Turkey map works best.
- Personally I think allocating 2 SCs to the areas of Libya and Egypt are a bit much. 1 should be sufficient.
- any reason why Sicily and Sardinia (which are Italian territory) are not painted green? I think they should, but that said I don't think they're worth SC-worthy. Ditto Crete (which I know was a significant battle, but I've been to Crete (as I have also Sardinia) and consider on balance they're not very SC-worthy. Palestine I agree should be an SC though.
- with the removal of an SC in (Italian) Libya and (British) Egypt, should instead an extra SC be allocated to the British mainland? I historically think Italy shouldn't get compensated though. Lets be realistic in the war the best they did in Europe was Albania. They couldn't even take Greece and needed German help.
- I like the idea about the Maginot line prohibiting a direct invasion of France proper from Germany. Can I suggest you put something in like the Hadrian Wall territory (a narrow strip of land) like in the 1066 variant? This would make it easy to occupy the Maginot line from other places. The way the code works though if done this way it wouldn't allow France to invade Germany. That's the only downside.
- Didn't Germany invade Norway in like a blink of the eye in real life? There needs to be some thought about how this would happen on this map as the best Germany could do is a fleet into Denmark (spring in 1st year), Skagarrat (autumn in 1st year, which I don't think most players would do) and then Norway (spring 2nd year). The alternative would be splitting the North and Norweigan Seas into East and West versions to similarly slow down an English attempt to get Norway before the Germans. Whats the plans for St P? Unless it was a Baltic fleet the way the board is set up the Soviets would reach Norway first which isn't very accurate
- Up to others to discuss (and maybe it was on page 2), but from a historically accurate perspective no-one in real life on either side invaded Sweden, Switzerland, Ireland and Spain should be impassable/un-invadable.
- any reason Tyrolia (which was part of Austria and therefore taken over by Germany in the Anschlus) not German?
