Also a gunboat Bourse and fog of market (i.e. you know your holdings but nobody else's until the game is over) would be fun.

I enjoyed the bourse aspect of the game a lot and I do think there was a fair amount of a learning curve that hopefully anyone new to the game mode, such as myself, will have begun to overcome. Let's get the discussion started on what would need to happen to get a new game going.

I would agree with those saying that a learning curve is necessary. It takes a while to pick up the nuances of the special rules, and even longer to understand the dynamics of how they affect the game on the board. I had no idea what was going on in my first game, and was overly cautious as well.I had a few turns where I was less active in bourse than I needed to be, but I was afraid of making disastrous mistakes. By the time I figured out how to play, I was out of contention, but I managed to be competitive against the midtable, and finished 5th or 6th. That situation is a lot different than someone completely disregarding the bourse.

The biggest thing to focus on is finding players committed to playing the game. The objective of the game is the bourse contest. The board is simply a sideshow, serving as a vehicle for calculating victory points. In my opinion the game needs to be an invitation only event. Finding 15 such committed players may be difficult, but it will be worth it to be patient until a full roster or serious players can be completed. My first invitation to play bourse came after a few originally invited players declined. My invitation read along the lines of, 'we are seeking serious, committed players for a Diplomacy game on the 901 KN map with a special set of economic rules. Can you commit to playing both board and bourse competitions for the duration of the projected game length?'

After the 2016 bourse game I was a strong advocate of the game being a rated contest. I still think that a rated game add a dichotomy that challenges players to take decisions one way or another, leading to unpredictable outcomes, and accordingly more excitement. The problem with rated games at VDiplomacy at large is that a majority of players stop playing to win games, and play first to protect and improve their ratings. The rating algorithm needs a complete overhaul to discourage this. Strength of opposition should be a factor, but not as significant as it is now, and certainly not in individual circumstances. Points earned for performance should be weighted against the overall cumulative ratings index of all players in a game. The current system makes it more profitable to target certain players, which has influence to top players parking on their ratings. Cypeg has not played for years. Matthew stopped playing almost immediately after he soared to a huge lead off a freak result in a WW4 game, awarding him 1,200 points. Until such time as the algorithm gets modified, we need to focus on inviting players who play to win, and accept the ratings implications after the game is over. There are a good core of players who play this way, and we just need to recruit from that pool.

Focusing on serious and committed players will also weed out NMRs, CDs, and bourse apathy. NMRs happen. Life happens. However, you cannot overlook the correlation of NMRs and poor performing nations. We need players willing to play out their positions for better or worse, and keep competing in the bourse even after elimination on the map. A great example of this was Dr. Recommended in the 2016 bourse game, where his Wagadu was faced with a slow painful grind up, but he sat atop the victory points chart for most of the game, and still finished top 3 as an eliminated nation. We need players like this to make bourse work. When there are 12-15 active economic investors anything can happen, and board victory can be juxaposed with bourse disaster, or vice versa. This is what makes bourse special.

You have some good points. I agree that there is a learning curve, and I am very glad to Leif and Dr. Rec for advising me.

I am sure kaner (who else would invite the players?) can scrounge up a solid roster of players for the next game. I'm not sure what the requirements will be, but I'm sure kaner can establish rational selection parameters.

Rating systems have their own problems; probably the only way to truly overcome them would be to make the game anon. But then how do you announce who's winning?

Gentlemen,

I have decided to issue a draw on this game. Not only has it been bedevilled by NMRs on the board, but the bourse aspect of the game as suffered similarly.

However I believe that there are a number of issues that we have learned collectively throughout this experience of this bourse game:

Firstly I think we need to have a clear End Game process in place, similar to how draw-votes are proposed and then voted on in a PBEM game.

Secondly, future bourse games should not be played for ranking - and be made unrated. I've watched how this game devolved because -like it or not- player's ranking was at stake.

Thirdly, there needs to be a clear NMR policy put into place before further games like this are run. I'm not sure exactly hat this would look like, but there needs to be one put in place otherwise we end up with an abortion like this particular game.

Fourth - it seems clear to me that changing the phase length will need to be implemented for retreats and builds.

and finally - and this is more a suggestion - we need to be more selective in selecting who plays in these games, if that means waiting longer for the game list to start, then so be it.

Gents, I thank you all for being involved in this game, I am especially sorry to those who voted to continue this game, as well as to those who put a tremendous amount of work into both the bourse and on-board aspects of the game.

I really hope that we've learned some lessons from this particular match, and we implement some of the things we have learned in the next bourse game that gets started.

Denmark: One thing I would recommend is NMRs delay a phase and put the offenders in CD. It doesn't prevent Bourse NMRs but it improves the overall game.

Future games should be by invite and not open recruiting until the invites have all accepted or declined. Then, recruiting should have some very high standards. Bourse requires much more effort than a typical press game.

Axum: If other players accept me, I would love to participate in another Bourse game.

kaner406 (Gamedirector): I'm more than happy to run another bourse game soon but the issues I outlined above needs to be addressed before it starts. I'll move this discussion to the forum tomorrow if someone else hasn't already done so by the time I get up.

Khazaria: For what it's worth, if people are going to insist that others deciding to hold their Bourse positions for a while is not merely a bad strategy, but game-ruining, a short pre-game trial-Bourse is sorely needed for those who haven't played it before. The amount of vitriol that folks were getting on their first Bourse game for making mistakes was simply absurd.

Spain: I am very disappointed with this result. I thought the game was interesting, and despite the NMRs, all surviving players were still active on the board and in the bourse. Also, I am strongly opposed to forced draws, as I believe it is an essential component of the game of Diplomacy that a draw vote must be unanimous among all surviving players, and the only provision that I can find in the site rules for forcing the end of a game is in cases of cheating.

Denmark: Those site rules don't apply to special rules games like this.

As far as not participating in the Bourse, that wasn't the issue (although simple logic says if you don't increase wealth you can't keep up). The problem was those playing for vPoints not Bourse VPs seriously disrupted the game.

Spain: I believe the site rules apply to all site games, especially when they are set up as rated games.

Denmark: Then we must agree to disagree.

Srivijaya: Rules mention that the mods can force a draw in the event of a stalemate (in case one player refuses to acknowledge the stalemate). In normal Diplomacy, this is reached when players have enough SCs to form stalemate lines, though there is always some change in the Bourse due to the nature of the game. That being said, an end-game equilibrium where currencies are all >$20 is pretty much a stalemate anyways, as any significant VP deviations are very unlikely to change. Hence, I consider it reasonable for the game mod to force a draw if the game reaches that point.

Spain: Having the game end when all surviving players agree to the draw is critical to the bourse part of the game, so a bourse game should not end in a forced draw even if there is a stalemate on the board. However, this game was apparently ended because of a perception of the quality of the game. First, I think this was a very good game, and there were some interesting developments in the last season that show how the bourse affects the game. Second, regardless of anyone's opinion of the quality of this game, it should only have been drawn by a unanimous vote.

Denmark: Well considering a mod forced item, I think you must accept it. If you wish to complain further, take it to the mod forum.

While I hear your point about the forced draw and I generally agree with you about mod action overruling player consent, this type of SRG with a GM running the bourse only succeeds at the GMs discretion. If the GM finds it pointless to continue because the quality of the game he has been running has suffered drastically, he is fully within his rights to refrain from wasting his time continuing to run the SRG. That is not covered by this site’s rules but has been an unspoken approach in GM’ing games of any sort just about everywhere I’ve encountered similar situations. From D&D to Redscape and multiple places in between apathy is the biggest enemy of a GM. I for one am grateful to Kaner for putting on these events. In the end I am actually disappointed the game was drawn as well, as there were some interesting developments about to go down across the board and bourse, but I can hardly fault Kaner for making a GM decision about what he is willing to commit his time to.
