Any SEA Players? Newbie here looking to find some community!
Hey! I'm Alien, a player based in the Philippines (GMT+8). I got introduced to Diplomacy around this time last year, and I'm finally getting back into the hobby since summer is just around the corner. It's been a struggle finding people to talk to or play with since this hobby isn't the *most* accessible, and most of the players seem to be from the US and EU. Is there anyone from in and around the SEA region looking to link up and organize some games?

IA Map Bugs with New Variant
I've got a variant I'm adding called Incensed. In the playtesting, there are issues with the interactive map. Certain regions work just fine. But there are some regions that don't get highlighted or can't really be clicked on. I'm not sure what the issue is. Seems like it also depends on what browser is being used, too. Any variant creators run into similar issues or know what might be the cause/solution?

ER Team Game Revival
Hey Folks! I was recently thinking about the Europa Renevatio Team game we did a couple years ago and I think we can do it again, better this time. Among the improvements, it may be ideal to determine the teams ahead of time and make them public so we can try to come up with a "balanced" set of 9 teams of 4. Would anyone else (err... 35 others?) want to give it a shot?

The Sandquest
So I've seen some players here go on some grand "quests" I'll say to play every variant on the site. I've decided I want to join the club and do so aswell, but I want to do so with some sort of cool "twist". Trying to solo every variant is a little impractical, and I'm not certain about something super simple like making them all gunboats. So anyone got some ideas?

I like how the powers are distributed currently as opposed to the colonial setup. You could give a couple powers a colonial type setup. There's a ton of island neutrals currently. Maybe some of them could be turned into home centers so some powers have two mainland home centers and a nearby island center.

I think the danger of having a lot of centers (and therefore a lot of units) is that, even if you have a lot of territories for those units to maneuver through, in reality most of the territories will be empty, and most of the units will be clumped together in localized areas creating stalemates. This also happens when you have large swathes of contiguous land or sea territories. Lots of territories means it also takes a long time to get anywhere. I think the extreme case is Lagos-Salvador-Yaounde. It'll take that player forever to get to the coast. Even with the rivers, they're better off just building army after army. That's why I'd reduce overall territories (especially sea territories that don't touch any SCs at all).

On the other hand, I think Berlin-Warsaw-Stockholm looks really interesting to play. They have a ton of different options for directions, and fun geography with the split coast. A tense position, but also really good access to neutral centers. I don't want to sound too critical here. This has potential to be a really amazing variant!

2024-02-20 version
11 player map
52 supply centers, 30 of them are neutral

variant rules
- build anywhere
- convert armies/fleets at Gnome/Goblin camps labeled with a "G" (these are not supply centers)
- set starting units that may not be on home supply centers

I don't want to discourage you, but I think this needs a lot of work.

Aesthetic-wise, a lot of the labels are difficult to read. Like something-Vashj'ir, is that an island and sea territory, or a single territory, hard to tell. There's unclear borders, like does Ghostlands touch Tor'watha? What are the purple diamond icons? Is the whirlpool in the middle just impassable?

On the rules, I don't understand what "set starting units that may not be on home supply centers" means.

Design/balance, it feels all over the place. The white power can hang out on their island and just mop up all the centers there. It doesn't look like orange power can take any centers in the first year. Any power that has a starting center/army on the Suramar islands, that's got to be pretty rough. All these starting centers touch each other and there's only one neutral center to take. Even though there's a lot of neutrals on the map, a lot of these can't even be taken on year one and some powers are forced to instead try to take the home centers of other powers on turn one.

No no not too critical at all hahaha, these are exactly the things I need to be taking into account. If anything Im glad it seems appealing.

Theoretically I understand your point about naturally bunching units, but man, trust me I know Im just being stubborn here but I feel there are many other maps I can reference that have similar space and unit ratios to Pangea that still maintain good gameplay...I swear I can take criticism...

As for Lagos-Salvador-Yaounde, my thinking there was to have a power similar in function to Heartland in Fall of the American Empire IV- give it a healthy amount of centers, but force it to prioritize inland.

Alright so Im tinkering with a modified version a bit, combining some territories and getting rid of some extraneous centers, but probably just like 10 at the moment... Again, just being stubborn, and Ill happily eat my own words, but I do feel the center/territory amount does play up the grandness of the thing, no? Ahhh well, if I can mock up a test run by all means join in. Im in this one for the long haul in terms of testing and balancing.

No worries, I'm just offering up opinions on what I'd do if I were making it. But, everyone's got different tastes and visions of what they want to make. My style is that I like to have interior powers (like the powers around the Berlin isthmus and the two nearby gulfs) and then I have a ring of edge powers, with large regions along the edges of the map so that the edge powers are much closer together than they look. I dunno if that's a good design philosophy, there's no one right answer! Just cause your vision might be different than what I would do, it doesn't make it bad by any means!

For Heartland, that power still has an incentive to build fleets since having those fleets in the Great Lakes gives a unique tactical advantage. They might be an army power, but that's not the same as fleets being totally irrelevant to them.
On the topic of inland powers and fleets- a couple of variants have played with that issue. The Hussite Wars fleets can skip over nonSC territories on rivers; Viking Diplomacy lets fleets convoy on rivers. The build anywhere mechanic can also encourage seaward development for inland powers.

Very interesting discussion about the Pangea map! I'm not sure that I have much to add except to point out that rivers can't bisect continents or have multiple mouths so far from each other. Other solutions to giving sea access to inland powers (like those that han-shahanshah just mentioned) may feel odd too, but the rivers as currently set up are so unrealistic that they take me out of the Pangea world.
Fake Al (1692 D)
21 Feb 24 UTC
I can't really say I agree regarding the rivers. Besides, I think this is mean to take place right when Pangea is breaking apart. So, the "rivers" are rifts where the continents are splitting apart.

Even then I think it's kind of splitting hairs with such a fantastical setting as this. There's another variant Haven that has rivers like this https://vdiplomacy.com/variants.php?variantID=51

@ibuprofen, Haven is probably another reference to take a look at that has a similar scope to what you're doing and (as far as I can tell) is well regarded as a variant.

@Fake Al, no - I know it needs a lot of help, which is why I put it out there for criticism. Your feedback is excellent, and I appreciate it.
Pander Beers (1148 D)
22 Feb 24 UTC
@Fake Al - firstly, thank you for your feedback. Secondly, please see my updated map https://i.imgur.com/sPL0L2Z.png - it's still not great, but I've downgraded it from 11p to 7p. My answers below reflect this new map, but your feedback is still applicable.

Below is your feedback and my reasoning behind the decision. Doesn't mean my decision is sound, but just so you can kind of get into my head, if you will.

1. Aesthetic-wise, a lot of the labels are difficult to read. Like something-Vashj'ir, is that an island and sea territory, or a single territory, hard to tell.
1a. Yeah, the names are very much in draft mode. I mostly threw them down but I can't figure out how I want to make them more readable. This is one of my number one things to fix as the variant is developed.

2. There's unclear borders, like does Ghostlands touch Tor'watha?
2a. Ghostlands does not touch Tor'watha, but I hear you and I'll adjust the borders so there are no "intersections."

3. What are the purple diamond icons?
3a. Five connected portals for armies to pass through. Also, you didn't ask, but the G markers are Gnome/Goblin camps which are the only places which armies/fleets can convert. They are not supply centers.

4. Is the whirlpool in the middle just impassable?
4a. Yes, as is the black area to the south of Vashj'ir Sea.

5. On the rules, I don't understand what "set starting units that may not be on home supply centers" means.
5a. The pink "Undercity" faction on the east continent has an army that starts in the south, at Booty Bay. Booty Bay is not a Supply Center. I did this to create some more interaction with the different teams to give them additional neighbors for early game.

6. Design/balance, it feels all over the place. The white power can hang out on their island and just mop up all the centers there.
6a. Yes, White in the north is one I'm most interested in playtesting. It's a pretty obvious threat that they can get a lot of Supply Centers easily, but I want that to encourage other players to deal with a potential snowball. White in the North, Purple in the middle (with two fleets), and Yellow in the South only start with 2 units/SCs. Everyone else starts with 3.

7. It doesn't look like orange power can take any centers in the first year.
7a. Correct, by design. I gave Orange (Purple, but I have my colors messed up) 2 fleets, and they're the only faction that starts with 2 fleets in a very coastal-heavy game. They're also well positioned to strong-arm diplomacy with the countries around them. I want them to be attractive as everyone's favorite ally, so I gimped them in Year 1.

8a. In the new version of the map, I've edited this 5-SC group of islands around Suramar. There are only 2 countries there (with a single army each), so you have more room to move. There's a bit of game there as far as, will you just bounce until the Kul Tiran's (purple/orange) show up? Will you ally and split the island? Will you fake to split the island but instead move into your "ally" and backstab them immediately to claim the entire island for yourself?

So this is based on World of Warcraft? Unfortunately, variants based on intellectual property are kind of a taboo here on vDip. You'll have to ask tobi1, but I'm not whether you can add and test it on vDip.

Oh, yes. If that variant is based on intellectual property we will not be able to host it here. Oli, who is still in charge of the running the website and carries the responsibility, did not want to enter that grey zone in the past and we should adhere to that.

I am relatively new to vDiplomacy since January. Has there ever been a discussion of the idea of adding AIR units in any games, to work alongside armies and navies? Might be fun to add the element of air strategy but keeping the same rules as fleets and armies, but with the exception of capturing supply centers. Any thoughts?
I think the basic interface of this site allows for only two types of units (as far as I know there is no variant here with three unit types). Certainly there are variants involving air units but some coding overhauls might be necessary before they can be installed on vDip.

Inherent Balance
I was thinking about my past games today, and I noticed a pattern: when I played or fought against a (mostly) sea power that started in the corner, that power tended to have the advantage because of their spawn place and unit composition on the map. Does anyone else feel like this is the case, or do you think that these types of powers are balanced?
For reference, I was thinking of Italy--Balkans 1860, Srivijaya--Known World 901, Madagascar--Africa, and Japan--Youngstown WWII.
