Anyone to Help me create a variant?
Hey yall. I have a variant design that I like but I dont really have a ton of time to make one myself. Is there someone who does that? I can credit you as co-creator.

If not thats totally cool

Advertise your NON-live games here!
In an effort to compromise the pro-ads versus anti-ads for games: Post here for your non-live games to cut down on the number of ads but still advertise games. Post game link, WTA or PPSC, and the bet. Note: this doesn't count for special rules games.

Looking to liquidate some positions
Hello all,

I'm planning to leave the site but want to stay in one game (not one I'm doing well in, it's for diplomatic reasons as well as it being a very, very long game, 9 months and counting). None of my positions are doomed; otherwise I'd just Civil Disorder out of them.

Why we can’t make a sandbox
Why we can’t make a sandbox, in the WebDip I can but here no, I need most time for make a game of a big variant, for example Europa renovatio

You can do sandboxes on WebDip now? Cool. Can you do it for the variants there?
DungDefender (1258 D)

Yeah, you can. But loading large games(namely, Chaos) is either slow or completely not working.

The answer to your question is no, there is no sandbox function here. Related to your question, webDip and vDip are not actually affiliated websites even though it might appear that way sometimes. Some of the content is shared, but the website itself is not owned or maintained by the same people. Or really anyone at the moment.

It would be fantastic to see Europa renovatio as an option in sandbox mode. I wonder if there's enough data on past games to teach AI/bots - the permutations of the map and the interplayer dynamics are much more complicated than standard Dip.

The problem with ER is that the dynamics involve so many players and every country can be played so differently based on alliances. Such as say Brandenburg, where all four directions are reasonable expansion options (see: https://vdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=59840 where my nearest not-soon-to-die neighbor is Bavaria). But in another game (https://vdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=58442) Brandenburg allied with Bohemia and Saxony and went full-Scandinavian. Whereas in Classic the only country with more than like 2-3 options is Italy.

Oh weird, if you put in game links to anon games (even ones I may or may not be in) it marks the message as Anonymous. I can see why tbh.

@bbg, sorry, I was responding to @ubercacher's comment. Sorry to get your hopes up.
Bump.

I find it hilarious that Italy is the power you think is the most flexible in classic. There ain't no way.
halfasleep (1616 D)

Well, Austria can either ally with Turkey or Italy (maybe Russia), Turkey can either Leviathan or ally with Austria or I guess Italy (though there's a reason I/T isn't popular) and the west can push against England or (more often from what I've seen) E/F against Germany. And Russia...okay yeah Russia's probably more flexible than Italy, focusing north or south are two very different strong options. But I want your opinion - who is most flexible in classic?
ubercacher16 (1837 D)
19 Aug 24 UTC
Leviathan is usually the name for the France/Germany alliance, are you thinking of Juggernaut?

I would argue France or Russia for most flexible. Not just in terms of alliance structure but in terms of viable openings. France has by far the most viable openings because of how strong their position is and Russia has the most openings period because of their fourth unit. Beyond that, Russia has four possible early game allies, though usually you end up picking two. Either Germany or England and Austria or Turkey. France only has two alliance options though, which is why I would see Russia as the most flexible strategically while France is the most flexible tactically.
ubercacher16 (1837 D)

As for Italy, they really only have two viable openings, one of which is barely viable because it locks you in to attack Austria. There is a third even worse option which is going for France in 1901.

If you want to talk about it in terms of alliance structure though I think every power is equally flexible if you can get out of the early game because any two countries can be allied in the mid game.

Ah yes @Ubercacher16 my bad I was thinking of Juggernaut. Fair enough, I could understand how France is more flexible tactically and as mentioned Russia strategically. I guess I see the midgame as more restrictive than perhaps it actually is, which may just be because of my playstyle and/or the fact I really haven't played a ton of Classic.

Hold Trolls
I’ve noticed an influx of players who intentionally submit nothing but hold orders for years on end until they are eliminated, even when they’re not in hopeless positions. Often these players take over strong positions in large games, only to act as though their country is in civil disorder but without giving anyone else the chance to take over the position.

Origin of sealanes
Which variant was the first to introduce sealanes? They're very popular in larger variants to allow more fleets to be in the sea at once, but I'm curious as to where they first showed up.

Nyanza Kingdoms Variant
I've come up with a six-player variant that's set in the African Great Lakes region before colonization. It features some rules like portage where armies can transport fleets across land that mean it can't be implemented here. I'm hoping to run a test game on Discord if anyone is interested: https://discord.gg/nHCducMs

I recently noticed some "hidden" variants while looking at the variants in the game search option. This was the weirdest one by far:

Excluding outliers from average game length
I was looking through the Variants tab and noticed that the average turn length in the Canton Diplomacy variant is listed as 195.51 turns. This looked a bit odd, since even 20 years of all 5 game phases is only 100 turns, and many games don't get that far.
