There are plenty more British Empire nations. India is one. They also had colonies in southern Africa.

My idea was more the Commonwealth Realms (the 16 nations where Queen Elizabeth is head of state) vs all the former nations of the British Empire where she is no longer (US, India, S. Africa, etc.).

The thought was a Ryder Cup style tourney where the same number of players from each side compete in matches. Whether theyre 1 v1, 2 v 2, or higher is yet to be determined. Each match would earn points depending on how it ends, leading to a final tally and a winner.

Alternatively, anonymous games coukd be played with an honor system not to reveal who you sre or what side youre on. These earn points until at one point, the top X number of people advance, not based on affiliation. These people play on to determine who the winner is.

@Drano It may be an idea to split it like that (Queen bs Non-Queen states) but I guess it depends on how many of each are here. At the moment, the US considerably outnumbers the Commonwealthers, so India and SA may be put on the Commonwealth side. I guess it depends how many of each we get.

Also, I was thinking we could do your second suggestion, except the honour system would only be restricted to not revealing who you are - you could try and bluff that you are on the other team. However, I'm not sure how well that would work...
I was thinking that we could do several variants, and when they finish each team gets 10 for a member who solo'd, 5 for a member who drew and 1 point for a member who survived. Think that would work?

Ideas for a format: Curling has its own version of the Ryder cup but it uses a bunch of bizarre curling variants to make a North America vs. World face-off. So, for a diplomacy version, you could have a couple of normal games, but then could add things like one-on-one or team games, or bourse or blind Diplomacy or whatever else.

as for a map what about Fall of the American Empire IV you have the 5 usa allaince and then there are the two canada's and you could just say that the south joinned the english vs america or something idk just could be one of the maps :P

So, to clarify my previous post, the Continental cup of curling has the following events:
Mixed doubles (A weird curling variant)
Singles (a skill shot competition)
Normal games
Skins(a minor variant. Known for making every shot matter)

So, I think these could correspond to events for this British Empire tournament as follows:
Mixed doubles: Two - on - two on a 4 player map (eg Rat wars). Or, some other fairly reasonable even-numbered total players team game. I think with Rat Wars, you could easily have teammates in opposite corners and get and interesting game.

Singles - One on one games.

Normal games - Normal, full-press, WTA games of dominion. Keep it anon and have a rule to not allow players to ask each other who's who on an honour system.

Skins - Not sure what to do here. PPSC games would give a similar system by making every SC matter. But, other variants might work. Again, whatever map and honour system. Both this and normal would be good with maps with even numbers of players, but odd could work too.

That brings it to even numbers on each team, but I'm going to leave signing up open for two more days, just in case someone else wants to join.

I like gman's idea quite a lot, so I think we'll go with that, I'm not sure how the scoring will work but I'm sure we'll work something out.
For the unbalanced 1v1 maps we may need to play each game twice, swapping countries the second time.

Personally not interested in 1-on-1's. That's not Diplomacy, that's just a going at each other with meat cleavers.

Im with Amby. Although it could be argued that any set team game isnt really Diplomacy.

So, the way this works in my mind, not everyone would have to play every event. The team could choose certain players who want to do 1 v 1 and could choose others to do other events.

And I totally agree, 1 on 1 is not diplomacy. But, this comes from the model of curling singles which is definitely not curling. It's a demonstration of skills used within a curling game. 1 on 1 also uses skills which are used within a normal diplomacy game.

Not 17 hours until we start - 17 hours until sign up closes. We probably won't start that soon after that - we need to decide on maps and stuff first.

Just a thought captainmeme, but isnt it usually the person who had the idea that gets to make decisions on stuff like sign up times and stuff like that?

honestly, I think it would make more sense to have a USA vs the world format, since probably most players on this site are American...
