Greyjoys and Lannisters are among the 7 Kingdoms. It's the Targarians and Dorne that are the extras. Plus there are the Others.

I've been trying to keep this idea alive.

Sorry, I meant Greyjoy and Targaryen since obviously the Lannisters are one of the seven.

House Martell isn't one of the extras. It's Targaryen and either Greyjoy or Tully depending on how you look at it. Greyjoys ruled over the Riverlands until Aegon the Conqueror who rewarded House Tully for their help with lordship over the Riverlands, leaving the Greyjoys with the lovely Iron Islands.

Nope, House Martell in Dorne are the holdouts. The whole premise of a good portion of the story is the Greyjoys quest for independence. This was the root of the revolt that led to the Greyjoy prince being held captive at Winterfell. The Martell's are the non-kings.

We are both wrong. Riverlands is the extra. It was carved out of the Iron Islands.

Regions of The Seven Kingdoms

While called 'the Seven Kingdoms', there are actually nine distinct regions of the realm. When the Targaryens conquered and unified Westeros three centuries ago, there were actually seven independent kingdoms, themselves coalescing out of earlier periods when hundreds of tiny nation-states existed. The Riverlands are held to be the eighth 'kingdom', as they were under the control of the ironborn at the time of Aegon's invasion; the last independent River King, of House Mudd, had died centuries earlier in a war with the Storm King. The newest region is the Crownlands, which are ruled directly by the crown. They were created only 300 years ago when Aegon Targaryen carved them out from lightly-populated pieces of neighboring realms, to form a distinct royal domain around King's Landing. The Crownlands also contain House Targaryen's ancestral holding on the island of Dragonstone, which they ruled for 200 years before Aegon conquered Westeros.

Well, I wasn't really wrong if you see my last post. As I said, it's Targaryen or Tully/Greyjoy depending on how you look at it.

If you look at before Aegon's conquest, it's definitely the Riverlands that are the extra.

After the conquest, the Riverlands are considered a kingdom just as much, if not moreso, than the Iron Islands.

But the phrase "The 7 Kingdoms" referred to the Iron Islands and not the Riverlands.

I understand that the Iron Islands are one of the original Seven Kingdoms. I've read a lot about the time period of Aegon's Conquest.

I still want a Westeros variant.
